3:30 is about average for most songs, especially older ones. I would consider anything under three minutes pretty short.

Not their shortest, but the shortest that actually made sense. I would probably set the bar at 1:00. Since my punk days were filled with :45 to 1:30 songs.

I couldn't agree more. All of DNA's songs are pretty short (almost all of them are under 3:00s), but I still love them to death.

It seems I was the first one to vote for <4m30s.
 
In the Prog environment anything less than that is short. but the next benchmark was 7 minutes and that, while not being ecessively long, feels not right for the question, a 6m30s is not what you can call a short song either.

There are many great short songs, like "Auslafen" from the Das Boot soundtrack (1:14)
