German jazz-rock band Passport is one of my all time favourite bands. And their output from the seventies is their best period, as far as I am concerned.
      To pick a single favourite was not easy for me, as i consider all records up to and including Iguacu to be five star records-yes, they are that good. I finally decided on the debut album, Doldinger. It has such a great style and really interesting vibe to it, real travelling music that i never grow tired of.
            What is your best one from this list?

I still have only heard those 2 I bought a few months ago, Second Passport and Cross-Collateral.  Of those two, I'll give a slight edge to Second Passport, but I enjoy them both.

They're all great, but I go with Cross Collateral, probably because it was the album I discovered the group through. I love everything they did through Infinity Machine, and after that for me Passport ceased to exist. Later Passport has some good moments but nothing like the albums above.

^^It's interesting to hear what you guys discovered the band with. For me, it was a used lp copy of Looking Thru i bought in January, 1988. I was so impressed!

Definitely an excellent band Doug! 
Of course I haven't heard all of them or even half of them' but I would go with Cross-Collateral just a little bit over Doldinger. I need to revisit my other vinyls too.

Add another vote for Cross-Collateral, not coincidentally my first experience with the band (which probably caught my attention with all those distinctive album covers)
 
Infinity Machine would probably be my next choice (for a lot of reasons beyond the appeal of Ju-Ju Man!) I also have a soft spot for Second Passport, but to me the best years of the band were when Curt Cress sat behind the drums. Fans should check out his CCC solo album, released the same year as Cross-Collateral and sounding not unpleasantly like a sort of Passport-Lite.

I love Passport and got the ones listed except the live one.
They are all good,but today i pick Infinity Machine.

^Hi, John-glad to see a vote for the debut, and for me, Cross-Collateral is a second, as well.
          yeah, i'll let you know what i think of CCC, though the record store told me it would be in over a month and a half ago,and no sign of it, oh,well, patience is a virtue.

I only have a few Passport LP's - but I'd thought I'd mention the oddity I picked up several years ago - it is an Aussie pressing issued as  Passport - Doldinger' but has the same cover-art as '2nd Passport'.  Half the songs are off the debut, and the other half from 2nd Passport.  The tracklist goes like this :
Side 1 -  Mandragora
                Nexus
                Fairy Tale
                Get Yourself A Second Passport
Side 2 -  Lemuria's Dance
                Madhouse Jam
                Horizon Beyond
                The Cat From Katmandu
 To me, its purpose is that of a compilation, obviously released for the small amount of fans the band had here at the time, so a silly compromise had to be made..........a great selection of tracks nevertheless.
Favourite track out of the 3 albums I have is 'Damals' - last track of Cross-Collateral.  'Looking Thru' is also a beauty, but no vote coz of the obvious.....

Picked up the first two Passport LPs just today - both for $5!  VG vinyl with tattered jackets.....always good for a big discount.  Anyway, was never a big fan but I'd only heard later stuff - Handmade and Cross Collateral were solid but something I'd reach for only one in a great while.  But these first two albums are so much more interesting anything I'd previously heard of the band......yeah, they lay their influences for all to see, but what influences!  I hear Silent Way era Miles, which also means early Weather Report influences; I hear CTI label funk; I hear Echoes; I hear the Soft Machine (in fact, while spacing out listening to the first side of the second album, I thought I was listening to post-Wyatt Softs); I hear Cosmic Jokers.....hell, a half dozen spacy Krautrock bands.......and half dozen spacy prog bands.....I'm raving here but, man, pleasantly surprised.

I had forgotten about this post quite a while ago; I have had Curt Cress Clan for some time now, and I quite like it. Safe to say, if you like mid-seventies Passport, you'll like CCC. Some great instrumental interplay on this one, too!
