I think a friend of mine gave me a heads up when the self titled debut album came out.  I was kind of a John Zorn fan at the time, and heard he had produced this album that was by this spinoff of Faith No More (that's what I heard, anyway, I know it's really not).  I wasn't a Faith No More fan, but I bought it out of curiosity.  Holy crap.  Blew my head off.  It was this crazy Zappa punk jazz funk metal stuff with grotesque sounds and lyrics.  Hadn't heard anything like it before.  Kind of scary in spots.  I listened a lot to that album.

By the time Disco Volante came out, I had kind of burned out on them, and wasn't in any hurry to buy it.  But then I read a review saying how avant garde it was, so even though I was still a bit skeptical, I picked it up eventually.  Holy crap, etc.  It remains my clear favorite of their 3 albums.

Having been convinced that the debut was no fluke, I dove right into California when it came out.  And... I was totally disappointed.  Still am.  Just can't get into that album, and I find it hard to understand why so many people love it so much.  I've still got a copy around the house, so I revisit it from time to time, waiting for that time it's gonna finally make sense to me.

Years later I learned of their pre-debut material (available for free download thru their website).  The only one I've bothered to try is the Easter Bunny one, and it's a hoot.

Try out OU818... that is if you like Squeeze Me Macaroni, Slowly Growing Deaf, Girls of Porn, and Love is a Fist. Great demos, I actually prefer the demo version of Squeeze Me Macaroni to the album version. So far I've only heard small parts of The Wrath of the Easter Bunny (I think thats what it's called) and all I can remember is terrible sound quality. LOL I'll try it out again though

I only just got my first, Disco Volante, a few weeks ago.  Have listened to it only once.  Wacky, but actually not as wacky as I had kind of feared.  Will have to listen to it more before saying anything else.

I was doing a live chat this morning and all of a sudden None of Them Knew They Were Robots popped into my head for some reason.  LOL

I got California back in July '07 and that is my favorite.  I had the other two in less than two weeks.  I think I may have ordered them immediately after hearing that one.  A whole lot of fun, I must say.

Holy crap indeed.
A friend did a cassette for me (yes that long ago) with various bands on and one was Mr Bungle. I'd never heard of them. It was a track off the first album, can't remember which one but it blew me away.

In our house "Mr Bungle" remains short-hand for "the horrendous rubbish that you listen to."

Loved the first album immediately.

Got the second and was initially disappointed but now I love it just as much.

Have never got California cos it gets well mixed reviews and what I've heard sounded...too normal...

Mr Bungle was my doorway into Secret Chiefs 3 too.

The cassette also contained another new band that would become close to my heart (albeit not in any way prog), and that was Clutch.

Great tape!!!

My initiation was very similar to this, although I was a Faith No More fan and knew little about John Zorn. After being introduced to the self-titled by the drummer in my band back then, I played that album to death, but yeah, by the time Disco Volante was released I had kind of forgotten about them, and my group of friends had completely changed, and my music interests were off on a weird tangent of trance, French pop and Scandinavian folk (I had gotten jaded with the whole rock & metal scene in the mid-late 90's until the internet eventually brought me back). I still haven't listened to Disco Volante and California, which I guess is odd since I can pretty much play the entire self-titled in my head.

I was already a big FNM fan when I first heard their first album. Although I was aware of them for years I had yet to hear their music. Sometime before Disco Volante came out, me and a friend were in a record store that sold both new and used music. I found a used CD copy of the debut. I asked the store owner if he could play it. He popped it in and pressed play. All three of use kinda stood there and looked at each other. Figuring something was wrong, the store owner turned up the volume and then shortly later we heard glass breaking (or whatever it is, haven't heard it in a while). But by the time the music started he had to turn the volume down. We all had a WTF moment. Good times.

Disco is my fav and Cali my least fav and some of the real early stuff is amusing. Like others I discovered Secret Chiefs 3 because of Bungle.

Yes, I'm very excited about the new album(s).  I think I like them even more than Bungle, even though I've only heard 3 of their albums so far.

A former penpal sent me a dubbed copy of the OU818 demo and it went from there.  Loved the first "official" album, took awhile to get into Disco Volante, greatly enjoyed California.

And to echo dogen, they got me into Spruance's other projects, Secret Chiefs 3 and Faxed Head (which teamed him with Gregg Turkington, who later became Neil Hamburger).  As well as Patton's Fantomas and Tomahawk.  I also have one of Trevor Dunn's Trio-Convulsant discs.

Was lucky enough to see Bungle twice, in two different eras - in '92 with Grotus and in '99 with DEP.

I guess my story is rather typical. I was a Faith No More fan who had heard of Mr.Bungle, but i was wary of them because it all seemed rather high brow and alien. I didnt look back after i first heard them though, Disco Volante is definitely a desert island album for me. (Imagine how f**king scary it must be to be alone on a desert island with "The Bends" playing in the background!)
