Ah I read a few reveiws on this book. Sounds really promising because highlights in the Mike Portnoy departure would be an interesting read. I'll buy it probably. :)

And so the departure of a band member of over 20 years becomes just another sales gimmick.

^ Surely there is more updated in the book besides Portnoy's departure. I don't have older editions, but from what I've heard, the book only went up to Octavarium, then a second edition added stuff after that, but doesn't go over much during the SC and BC&SL years, so I think the new edition covers more of that era, plus recent years.

I want to think that's not true but something tells me it might be...

Wasn't impressed with the way they (both DT and Portnoy) handled the whole thing in the first place.  Whatever, they're just a rock band.

DT were very classy about the whole thing. The problem is, is that we, the fans, do not really know what went down behind closed doors, and what it was that caused Mike to leave. Hopefully, the new book will reveal much intriguing information.

I tend to agree on the point where Portnoy leaving Dream Theater wasnt that smooth and graceful, but it did lead to that 'KIller' 3 part documentary 'the spirit carries on.' I did live that and it would never have been if Portnoy hadn't decided to be a complete arse and ask for a hiatus with dream Theater all together, so he could tour with sh*tty, Avenged Sevenfold.
Portnoy really lost me here, so it the book can explain in more detail his reasonings for all that, then I may consider getting a copy of the book. :)

I said "books" not DT members. The book is written by Rich Wilson who is a rock music writer as well as DT fan...Any biography written by someone else might have his own spin on things. I would prefer to hear it straight from the horses mouth.

Isn't that what the book consists of? It's the official biography, and the members of DT are interviewed by Rich Wilson.

Right, that's what it is, otherwise it would not be selling on the DT'S web site.

Just for the record, the book is not for sale on the band's official webpage. The band also didn't have any control over what I wrote, as anyone who read the previous editions will testify to. This is not a sanitized band biography!

Also, the printing of the book in paperback is not a "sales gimmick". The book was always planned to come out in paperback - as most books do after a hardback release. I had two choices when the publishers agreed to put it out  - either update it or leave it out of date. I chose to update it, as for me, that was the right thing to do. To be honest, I'd be criticised either way!!

Your last sentence let me confusedConfused The bio should have interviews from the members themselves conducted by Wilson or by others, so it's from the horses mouth, unless you imply that the members should have written their own bio...

There have been many books "authorized" by bands or whoever, once issued the content seems to stray from what later on the band members say is the truth. So all of a sudden we have these different stories and the media and public trying to decipher what is the right story.
I don't believe everything someone says about another person.

Portnoy was on That Metal Show after the breakup and you could tell when he was asked about it, he was not happy about it, how it came down. But I appreciate that he at least was honest enough to standup and tell the other band mates he did not think the creative juices were flowing anymore, as a band.
Testimony 2 and Momentum is some great playing by him ,and seeing both of these tours he was playing with more passion than I have ever seen him play.

We'll never know the truth about anything in life, the book of Mr. Wilson is only his vision as a fan of DT, and i wouldn't see the point of making 200 pages of "lies" about a band. I always think that when you get passion about something, you're going to be closer to the truth that if you tell plenty of "lies" about something you don't care... That's why i pay more attention about a biography written by someone who is passionate about his subject, that a little review in a magazine by someone who criticize a artist on his craft and his music, only because he doesn't like his music.

Let's give the guy a break. I am sure it's not 200+ pages of lies.

Anyway. Can't a publicist/novelist get sued for tampering with the truth?
I think so. ;)
