So I'm really big into the newest album by Unexpect (Fables of the Sleepless Empire). I was wondering if there's anything similar in terms of how mindblowing of an album it is. I don't mean just heavy or melodic. I am basically looking for an album that has compositions, as if not more, complex than Unexpect's. Just as a reference, and not to insult anyone's bands, but I am not that big into Between the Buried and Me. Personally, I don't find their albums to be that complex, even if they are really heavy. Their music doesn't seem to have enough (or for me personally...ANY) emotion. I am a fan of Green Carnation's Light of Day Day of Darkness, as well as both of Diablo Swing Orchestra's albums (even though the latter is a bit too straightforward for what I'm looking for at the moment.) One thing that I liked about Fables was not only how complex it was, but also how unpredictable and yet structurally deep those songs were. So if anyone has some recommendations, I'd love to hear them!

Have you heard their album In A Flesh Aquarium? It's even better than Fables IMO. I've thought that UneXpect sometimes reminds me of Mr. Bungle and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Are you familiar with them?

Thanks, I'll check those out. I used to listen to Sleepytime a few years back, they're really good. They were supposed to release something a while back, but I think they disbanded or something right?
And I have listened to in a Flesh aquarium, but I didn't like it as much as their new one. Maybe I should listen a few more times though... which song was your favourite? |

Nothing to do with Unexpect. Opera IX is Italian black metal band actually, but I suggest them because of that beautiful complexity of their music. Not so much extreme black metal anyway.

Listen to the Boredoms' early work. It's the apotheosis of extremely intelligent music pretending to be extremely stupid.

Seconding maudlin of the well (Try Bath/Leaving Your Body Map), Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (Of Natural History), and Kayo Dot (their new album Hubardo is great). Also, I like the Blazing Arrow avatar, haven't listened to that for so long; thanks for the memories!

Just as an update, Stolen babies is amazing stuff. Its perfect for my mood right now! Some of their playing is really impressive.
And I love maudlin, although most Kayo Dot is pretty unappealing ears. I tried checking out their newest since I'm a big fan of their first album so I keep thinking they'll put out something good again, but I can't handle how amaturish the vocals sound now. They're not even being sung anymore. And Blazing Arrow is pretty funky, I'm a fan. |
