Phlox has just released their demo version of "Pale, Blue China" recorded in 2010 with female vocalist.

Interesting! Are the "excerpts" on the 2013 version from this recording? Because they sound much clearer in this version.

Also, not that the current singer (you?) isn't good, but I do kind of miss the female vocals. What happened there?

Hi Franck, hope you're doing fine. The 2013 excerpts in YWNTS album was not from this 2010 demo. Here is a good info for you; the 2013 excerpts of intro and outro was the first trial of how the song is written in spontaneously by Shehnaz and me. So we'd put this as a tribute of how this was made and improvised into a song. 

She is still with us, however now she is somewhere far to pursue in her own career. She has made largely of contribution in the band and most of the songs in YWNTS were written with her. We pray for her best and who knows she might come back for an album with us.
