I did a search for this band on this site but didn't find a thread. This band is INCREDIBLE and I can't stop listening to them- Every album is so rich and interesting!

Is anyone else digging them?

I've always dismissed them as a Mastodon clone.

I've heard Blue (or Red...I forget which) which had it's moments but overall didn't put the shallots in the omelet if you know what I've mean. I then listened to half of Yellow/Green before I needed to move on.
Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive

I have read/heard this before-

Why? I see (hear) HUGE differences stylistically/musically- Take the Yellow/Green Album- have you heard this one?

I used to think the same way too, but nope, they are very different, with Baroness being much closer to post-metal than Mastodon.

Red Album is brilliant.
Blue Record is great.
Yellow/Green has its moments, though I've found it to be somewhat disappointing.  Not that I mind the reduction of the metal sound, but some of the songs are just too plain.

I've not heard the EPs, which I've read are heavier, but albumwise they've never been as heavy as Mastodon.  And as said above, they've always been more on the post-metal side of sludge than Mastodon.  I prefer the first two Baroness albums to the first two Mastodon albums (don't have Blood Mountain yet) and The Hunter, but Crack the Skye beats any Baroness album so far.

Anyway, yes, there are obvious similarities between the two bands, but I would not call Baroness a Mastodon clone by any means.

Kind of funny (to me) story.  I saw Baroness open for Opeth during the Watershed tour.  Had never heard them at the time, and honestly did not pay that much attention to them.  Years later I bought Blue Record, but it wasn't to later I realized I'd already seen the band live.  And wished I'd given them more of a chance at the time!  Oh well.

Baroness is awesome, play Blue from start to finish and it'll click. Horse Called Golgotha and Swollen and Halo are my two favorites. First and Second are the way to go if you want something heavy. Rise is a badass track.

I've only got the Red Album and it's pretty good. I don't get the Mastodon comparison, they're a sludgy Post-Metal band, a verydifferent beast to Mastodon.

Are they still going, I gather half the band quit after the terrible tour bus accident in England last year.

Same here, a far less progressive Mastodon clone to be precise...

It would take some major shift in their style to draw my attention

Dunno, Mastodon dipped their toes into prog at least a couple of times.
Call Baroness whatever you want (alt metal/ sludge/ stoner) but it's a complete mystery to me why they are associated with anything prog.
I also think they are pretty boring but that is just my personal opinion.

I get the comparisons, and Mastodon is my second favorite band of all time... but I still love me some Baroness. They both broke out on the scene around the same time, no ones copying anybody here.

Mastodon formed in 2000 and their debut was out in 2002, then Leviathan in '04, then Blood Mountain in '06.

Baroness formed in '03 and their debut was out in '07 - thought EP was their out was in '04.

It's completely possible.

Early Mastodon is very heavy sludge metal, their sound didn't fully develop, for me anyway, until Blood Mountain. Baroness draws comparisons to Crack The Skye and The Hunter. For me they sound totally different altogether, but only because I've picked apart the albums so much.

Either way, both bands are great and extremely talented, and even if Baroness was trying to cash in on a trend, I'd rather see more Mastodon clones than the tons of Melo Death bands we see crank albums out year after year that sound EXACTLY the same. I think it's great how Mastodons sound is so unique that the one time a similar band comes out they get pegged as clones.

^Really, Crack the Skye and The Hunter are the two albums I would say have the least in common with Baroness sound. I could easily see Remission and Leviathan as being influences on them, but like I said, really not clones.
