Burning Rope with Undertow a close second---can't get over that big synth opening of Rope---with Hackett on this song it could have been even more amazing.

Didn't make the album as it was deemed to be too much like early Genesis apparently. Its a killer track much better than most of the album imho ( I would only put Deep In The Motherlode above it) and I really like the album as it is.

When was this said? Would love to read/hear/watch whatever interview this was from. I quite like the song as well, would have been a great fit for the album, both musically and lyrically. Vancouver could have worked but I don't know, sounds like it would have fit better on Duke. |
I read it on here unfortunately . The comment makes sense so I went with it. The thread was discussing the fact that Genesis had recorded a whole prog album which was subsequently discarded for Abacab. I think it was Rutherford who mentioned this in an interview but I've got no links. Sorry!

I think it sounds quite like pre Trick Genesis, but with the modern Dave Hentschel production. It would have been a welcome addition for the album, perhaps replacing 'Scenes from a nights dream' or maybe replacing Your own Special Way or Wot Gorrila on WAW. |
I like Scenes From A Night Dream , probably one of my favourite tracks on the album. I would not be to miserable if Follow You Follow Me made way for it

I once said that I want "Burning Rope" played at my funeral. I guess that says it all

Even though they've gone the shorter composition styling, these songs still pack a punch and are quite complex....

Burning Rope! And to the OP, the song has always been about wasted time and wasted life to me. Don't live today for tomorrow like you were immortal, the only survivors on this world of us are...

The chorus and last verse make sense with the interpretation, but what is the significance of the first verse? To poke another hole, who is "The man in the moon who seduced you and finally loosed you"?

Although when I first got into that album I would have agreed with you. My perspective changed. Don't know why. SFAND has some strong melodies and nice well placed key changes in good Genesis tradition, but structurally I find it a lazy song that could have been developed more, but then you could probably argue that for a lot of the shorter songs on ATTWT and Duke.

I agree, lyrically it fits so well with the album but I can't help but feel that if it was more developed it would be a much better song.

Undertow.

When he rides, my fears subside. For darkness turns once more to light. Through the skies, his white horse flies. To find a land beyond the night.
