The film world has lost today one of its wonderful singular actors: Jean-Louis Trintignant.
I discovered his talent during my film studies, and not through those films he's maybe most well known for (Et Dieu... créa la femme, Un homme et une femme, Il conformista, Z... and many others), but rather through his repeated collaborations with Alain Robbe-Grillet (Trans-Europ-Express, L'homme qui ment, Glissments progressifs du plaisir...). In one of his later performances he very much impressed me in Michael Haneke's Amour (alongside the as singular and wonderful actress Emmanuelle Riva!).
He impressed in many other films by directors like Ettore Scola, Alain Cavalier, Valerio Zurlini, Claude Lelouch, Krzysztof Kieślowski, André Téchiné, Jacques Audiard, and many others...

Somehow he turned his timidity into an instrument for his acting: which much restraint, but always to the point and convincing. Not an academic actor, but a natural talent. Cinema will miss him.

yup, one of the last great of that phenomenal generation of french actors

RIP
For the US movie buffs, he made an appearance in the Under Fire movie (Nolte & Hackman) in a brief and intringuing role

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

I've seen him in many films. RIP. At least he reached a pretty good age.

I see Trans-Europ-Express is online, with English subtitles. One of my favourite films by Alain Robbe-Grillet, with a prominent role for Jean-Louis Trintignant. If you like it a bit weird...

A very sad loss... I will always associate him with with Three Colours: Red, of course, then later in both Amour and Happy End, with Haneke and of course, Chereau's Those Who Love Me Can Take The Train.
