Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I'm only into these two and that's my order of preference. I'm sure I could like more if I tried more (I never got into Tubular Bells). |

I'm not sure about the order, but I guess something like this. Ommadawn, Hergest Ridge, Tubular Bells, Incantations, Return to Ommadawn, Tubular Bells 3, The Songs of Distant Earth.

that pretty much nails it as far as his most important albums go and certainly within the very loose idea of 'progressive rock music''. I like that order as well. Of the rest I also enjoy Platinum QE2 Five Miles Out Crisis TB3 Tres Lunas Discovery I only truly dislike Man On The Rocks, Earth Moving and maybe Heavens Open. The likes of Guitars, Voyager, The Millenium Bell and TB2 are not terrible. I also love the live version of TB on Exposed Edited by richardh - Yesterday at 02:44 |

Tubular Bells
Ommadawn Incantations I once saw a Kevyn Ayers concert/documentary live in Spain (Andy Summers was in the band at the time), and he said he loved Mike Oldfield like a son, but that after the first album, his sound always remained the same. However, Ommadawn always held a special something for me, with the addition of the African-influenced percussion and backing vocals. I don't know many to be honest and currently only own about 7. At this point Incantations might be my favorite but Hergest Ridge and Tubular Bells are great too. Ommadawn hasn't clicked with me yet and neither has Amarok. I'm also familiar with Islands which has a great 20 minute track but mostly average pop songs on the other side. I also have his only classical album called Music From The Spheres which is actually rather nice but only listened to it once so far I think.

What I always love is his guitar solo on Kevyn Ayers' album, Shooting at the Moon. The track Lunatics Lament.

The great 20 minute track followed by 'average pop songs' routine is a blueprint for a number of his albums, esp Crises which has a great A side and fairly woeful B side. Personally, I think The Wind Chimes is a bit lacklustre by his standards, but I still own it. Music of the Spheres is a beautiful piece of music and a little underrated here; I play it quite often. |
