BAND INFORMATION
A short paragraph with your reasons why this band should be added
Akenathon is one of the most important bands in the burgeoning Argentine neoprog scene. They have been active since 2010 and recently released their third, and highly acclaimed album Crónicas Intrascendentes. They have also been a key driving force behind the reputed La Plata Prog Festival. Their members are also involved in various local outfits.
Artist/band biography
Akenathon emerged around 2000 in the vibrant musical landscape of La Plata, Argentina. Rather than conforming to a genre, the band was driven by an insatiable desire to chart new creative territories. Firmly rooted in Argentina’s rich progressive rock tradition, Akenathon became a pillar of the local scene.
The current lineup—Aníbal Acuaro (guitar, vocals), Guillermo Rocca (drums, vocals), Fernando Chávez González (bass, synth), and Marcela Crusat (keyboards)—brings a diverse mix of influences and skills. Their music blends classical training, jazz instincts, prog-rock power, and electronic textures. Songs often begin as sketches from Aníbal and are reshaped through the group’s dynamic, collective process.
The name Akenathon was chosen for its sound but later took on deeper meaning through the story of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten, a revolutionary figure who reshaped his world. This spirit of transformation permeates the band's ethos.
Their discography traces a journey of creative evolution. The debut album, Peregrino (2009), laid the groundwork for their genre-defying sound. Como Hormigas (2020) expanded their reach, and Crónicas Intrascendentes (2025), digitally released by Viajero Inmovil Records and on vinyl by PQЯ-Disques plusqueréel, marked a high point with its conceptual depth and narrative unity. The album explores the significance of suppressed memories and unobservables in life’s mundane moments, matched by Laura Boassi’s avant cover art aesthetics.
Akenathon’s music defies easy classification. While often labeled “eclectic prog,” their sound is a fusion of 70s progressive rock, cinematic textures, classical music, hard rock, tango, jazz fusion, and Argentinean folk. Influences include international acts like Änglagård, Gosta Berlings Saga, and Discipline, alongside Argentinean prog legends such as Charly García, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Crucis, and La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros.
Each member pursues artistic projects beyond the band, enriching Akenathon’s creative flow. Fernando Chávez González recently released his self-titled album. This work began in 2017 for the contemporary dance piece “Trauer, rendirse ante el dolor,” which explored the different stages of grief. Marcela Crusat explores French Impressionism with Duo Cruma, performs original works with duo Crusat Fernandez, and participates in the La Plata Guitar Ensemble. Aníbal Acuaro delves into jazz-rock fusion with the Jack Rozz Trio.
Akenathon are reputed for delivering intense, immersive performances that resonate deeply with their audiences. On top of the extensive roster of venues and festivals where they performed over the past 15 years, they headlined the prestigious La Plata Prog Festival in October 2025. Akenathon played a key role in launching the La Plata Prog Festival in 2010 and are active members of the Colectivo Progresivo Platense, a collaborative community supporting progressive artists nationwide. LaPlata Prog Festival, held in La Plata, Buenos Aires, celebrates progressive rock and its related genres such as symphonic rock, jazz-rock, and fusion. The festival showcases the city's rich and diverse musical offerings and has become one of the most significant progressive rock festivals in Argentina and South America.
