Hi all,
Heres the thing: I want to buy King Crimson cds (studio albums only) but the fact is, there are so many versions, re-issues, anniversary special editions, box sets etc. I just dont know what to get.. So far I know theyve released a limited edition 3cd box for the first three albums, I cant find it anywhere - so I'm assuming its all out

So I need your help:
  • What boxes\sets are available for more than one cd..? you know boxes with 2-3 or even whole discography cds!
  • If there are none of those I know I'm gonna have to buy the cds one buy one - BUT - whats the best version to get? Best version meaning the highest-quality remastered and ofcourse the occasional bonus tracks\digipack stuff\booklet features you know...
  • Are there any deals that you know of on the web that you can buy a hefty amount of their cds for a good price?
I know this kinda seems too asking for a first post but hey this could prove very useful for people getting into King Crimson
If there are enough good posts we could sticky this in a new "buyers guide" section

Welcome to Progarchives!  I'm pretty certain you are our first member from Bahrain!  Double welcome!

If you have not already done so, take some time to navigate the site and see what's available.  Record reviews (feel free to contribute your own!), discussion forums, interviews, etc.

Re Crimson, given Robert Fripp's perfectionism, it is unlikely that any versions of the albums are less than good, if not excellent.  This would include box sets.  So you are probably safe buying just about anything, if it has what you are looking for.

Personally, I prefer to buy albums individually, even at the added cost, because then I get the original covers, lyrics books, etc.  Sometimes the box sets do not have these things (though they may have additional stuff, like longer books, etc.).

With Crimson, it is definitely best to listen to them in chronological order, both because it will give you an idea of how heir style changed and/or developed, and you will be able to hear how personnel changes affected those styles.  Start with "In the Court" and move on from there.

Finally, if that's your photo, you may want to be aware that some of the guys on the site can be somewhat "testosterone"-heavy.  Most of them will "play nice," but you may get the occasional off-color comment.  If you don't like that, thell them.  If you don't mind, feel free to be playful, but be careful of "leading them on" - they're likely to go the distance!  (And if you ever have any real problems here, feel free to send me a private message.)

I'm a Crimson fan, every release has merit to it, in my opinion. I'd highly recommend checking out their site, through which you can order everything anyway, and get Live '81 in Berkeley, Ca., a live masterpiece, material from Discipline and Beat, excellent versions that outdo the studio versions.

If you're talking about the different releases of each individual album, the ones to go for are the "thirtieth anniversary" ones. I forget which record label these are from but I'll post again when I've checked it. They also have really detailed notes on the CD slip with newspaper clippings etc. but no bonus tracks.

However, there are compilations (for example "A Young Person's Guide to King Crimson"; strange name but apparently very good) of rarities available if you're going for collecting as much as possible,

In terms of box sets I've never heard mention of any. If you have a new format sound system, DVDA or SACD or something, I'm not sure but I think there was mention of releasing at least some of them in that format, so you may want to wait and see about those.

Thaanks for the help :).. So I think I'm going to look for the 30th anniversary editions - I like the "newspaper clippings" idea.. I dont believe in DVDA and SACD formats.. I think CDs suffice quality-wise for me

I was just interested in getting a boxed-set since I've seen Pink Floyd release one a few years ago that had all their cds at a great price, and hell it looked good too.. But alas I already had half of them back then.

Good idea. The 30th anniversary editions sound much better, clearer and more detailed than older cd versions. Especially 'Lizard' and 'Islands'. The packaging is great too.

Of course nothing beats the original vinyls (the original UK Island pressings, that is).

QUESTION:
I've looked in for the cds in a lotta places..
King Crimsons website has this shopping place which has almost all cds out of stock: http://www.disciplineglobalmobile.com/shop/
My favourite mailorder place The Lasers Edge only has one

So I've looked and looked and the only place seems I can buy the cds from is Amazon.com..
Do you have any other good places to recommend?

Strongy recommend you buy yourself Sid Smith's In The Court of King Crimson (pub Helter Skelter) for a good history of KC and also an excellent critical review of each of their albums.

Fitzcarraldo - dude I've been looking for sites like these.. Theres this site GEMM music that I forgot about and was looking for for a while..
I especially like GEMM (they have the hardtogets), bigbaloon, cd europe (a little expensive tho), Cd connection, CDServices, music direct
