Topic: Tommy and Quadrophenia Posted: February 16 2006 at 17:13 |
I'm not sure why everyone's so passionate about who is or isn't included. Let the site be what it is - if Love Beach is in here, then anything goes, yes?
Having said that, I feel both of these albums should be included here - for historical context if nothing else. Both played important roles in the development of the concept album, and Quadrophenia especially belongs for it's intricacy, power and arangement.

Everyone knows rock attained perfection in 1974, it's a scientific fact.

I'm still a newcomer to this so bear with me. I'm starting to realize that the label of "progressive" is so broad that it almost comes down to whether or not a particular song is prog or not. Moreso than the band itself. I agree that Whos Next has some prog elements in some songs but I would never characterize the Who as anything else but ROCK. I guess that's why I joined this forum so I could figure out where people like me fit in to the current music world.

I guess its impossible add The Who with only 2 of their albums...even when those albums are masterpieces...
In my opinion Sgt. Pepper is the only which deserves to be here in PA...but the discography is "complete".
Don't get me wrong, I Love These Bands!

OK, if you want to add these two albums, do it and I will support that. I really think these are two great albums, I own them and really enjoy listening them. For me these two deserve or have enough prog characteristics to be identified as proper prog albums.
But please, don't add Who's next, Odds and Sods, By numbers, etc all remaining Who albums, which are great, but NOT PROG!!!
It is really irritating and frustrating to see "Rubber & Soul" reviewed after "Larks tongues in Aspic" or "Queen Jazz!!!" before "Sky moves sideways".
I think this is the only way this site can keep its direction. When adding a non prog band, just add what you consider to be their more prog albums or quasi prog albums, but please stop adding bands that don't have enough merits to be here and only contaminate the site.

Have you ever heard Who's Next? If any Who album deserves a place in the archive, that's the one! From the Terry Riley inspired synth opening of Baba O'Reilly to the epic, keyboard drenched Won't Get Fooled Again it's a prog masterpiece in all but name.

Tommy's not a "prog" album per se. sure, it was one of the 1st albums to ahve a flowing narrative and connections between all the songs. but it shares little of the qualities that most Art Rock has. so quit fretting, I'm sure the administratiors know who and what they feel needs added to the site.
THe Who rock.

'Contaminate' the site you say? That's what causes most of the bitter frustration on these forums: whether or not a band in the archives is actual, genuine Progressive Rock. Problem is- it's all a matter of opinion. Some people think Prog lived and died in the 70s. Some people think any album with no song longer than 10mins on it is NOT prog. For example: I myself LOVE Radiohead but i don't think they're prog. And it's funny that Tool are here, without A Perfect Circle, but you don't see me getting my knickers in a twist over something so trivial as that. And then there's all the different branches that come from this word Prog: prog-RELATED being one. Note the RELATED. And then there are the sad, sad, uninspired people who think that if it's not Prog, it doesn't sound good.
I really enjoyed watching Tommy. I havn't heard the original album I admit but the storyline was a great one. okay- so they're not prog but frankly I don't care. Just chill-out Steve- it's only a music-forum
