Topic: Why would any one? Posted: December 19 2006 at 19:15 |
Help me understand folks. What on earth is the point of reviewing albums like “close to the edge” It has been reviewed more the 589 times before. Is this self delusion? That you have something new to add to everyone’s insight into this work? What could anyone possibly say that has not been said before? Why are you wasting your time with such reviews? Why don’t you review something that has less then 50 reviews. In that case you might actually add something. Yes sure everyone has the right to do publish such reviews but why would any one chose to it? Please enlighten me.

For enlightenment his Holiness the Dali Lama is an excellent resourse.

Like it or not, most prog fans stick with the basics. Close to the Edge is a brilliant album that's also quite easy to enjoy - it's not overly jazzy, improvised, heavy or dissonant; just pure candy poured directly into the ear. There's no shame in gushing over such a universally embraced album, even if your praise is somewhat redundant - it's a hippy lovefest for music lovers, just like the band themselves intended. :D
I haven't reviewed it, but then I haven't reviewed anything - I'm always worried that I'll give someone else the wrong idea about an album. Still, I expect it to have 750 reviews by the end of next year.

There's really no point. If an album has been reviewed 20-30 times, a broad enough spectre of opinions is presented. But if people want to add more malformed, cliche reviews to 500 already present, what the hell, go ahead. Not that anyone's gonna read them

I guess it would be a personal thing. If you want to submit a review it's always a good contribution.

When I need information about albums, in order to discover new music, I find allmusic to be quite useful. So far, I can't say I don't agree with what's there in terms of reviews.

Every time someone (favourably) reviews it, Yes sends them piles of money, and a sexy, willing young groupie.
Too bad you didn't review it....
Again, my dear? In the Ferrari this time? And you want to handle the stick-shift?
Gotta go....

I find myself on allmusic often, and I have the same problem with the reviews, I've struck some that straight out say an album is crap without any further elaboration.

Everytime Selling England or Darkside etc overtake CTTE,out come a half dozen more reviews (probably by the same fanboy reviewers under a psuedonym) to bump it back up to the #1 spot.
Does that help with the enlightenment?

It's actually Chris Squire. He gets SO PISSED when Genesis thinks they're better than him.

Of course, the enlightenment itself is ultimately up to you.
But, a little Yes in the meantime couldn't hurt.

Well I mean everyone is entitled to their own opinions, so i guess wether people read their reviews or not they are always their for their sake.

maybe people should read what everyone else has and see if they have an entirely new approach first?

I don't see a problem with multiple reviews. Aren't 500+ reviews a better statistical sample than 20 or 30? Should we perhaps restrict voting in government elections to the first 20 or 30 people who turn up at the voting booths?
And yes I have reviewed CTTE, SEBTP etc etc. They've been in my collection almost since I became aware of music that wasn't in the single charts

any person has a right to review what he likes. the fact that CTTE is very heavily appreciated or rated, the fact that sometimes things like unreasonable reviews take place (so to say, too many 5 stars or surprising bashes, on the contrary side)...it all counts less.

I really couldn't agree with you more; in fact I distinctly remember starting a thread about the same thing when I'd only been here a couple of weeks myself... at the time, what really got me was the fact that we had over 100 reviews of DT's Octavarium before the damn album had been officially released...
I think the only thing you can say is that everyone is entitled to freedom of speech. If they do a review of CttE, they'll get their 15 minutes of fame while it is on the homepage (if anyone can be bothered to read it).. after that, it will just slide into obscurity... after all, I wonder how many times review number 372 of CttE has been/ will be read...
