With that said, there are days I prefer VDGG to King Crimson. I love KC, but for me it really boils down to about 4 or 5 albums out of their whole oeuvre that I really like. I really enjoy VDGG from "The least we could do..." until "The Quiet Zone... " which makes 7 albums.

Of course, KC had albums like "Red" and "In the Court Of..." which are probably better than anything VDGG did, if only just.

The styles are different though. Recently I've found I prefer listening to VDGG. Peter Hammill has a certain way of creating an ominous, brooding tone which builds into fantastic organ and sax solos that explode to end a song, and the whole set-up just really appeals to me.

I've loved them from the first listen, but I've heard a lot of people say it's an aquired taste, so I guess you better just check it out for yourself and see!

Thanks for the reply, and yeah, I know what you mean about bands like Floyd and Crimson always being a notch ahead, I'm guilty of the same mindset. Having said that though, VDGG still sound interesting from what you've described, and I think I'll definately check 'em out now.

^^ Excellent choices mate, and I agree about the timelessness of those records. I'll admit though, I haven't listened to any Van Der Graaf Generator yet.....How do you like them compared to Floyd, Crimson, etc? I hear tell the Godbluff LP is quite good.

Why not, I'll take a crack.

1) Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
2) Yes -  Tales From Topographic Oceans
3) The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
4)King Crimson - Red
5) Jethro Tull - Heavy Horses
6) Yes - Close To The Edge
7) Genesis - Foxtrot
8) Pink Floyd - Animals
9) Rush - A Farewell To Kings
10) Van Der Graaf Generator - Godbluff

That's the top 10 as of right this second. Changes at least weekly. (Except for position 1)

But seriously, ask me again next week and you could find gentle giant, focus, camel, marillion, peter hammill, steve howe, caravan...etc, etc. God only knows. These bands/albums are all so damned classic that it all depends on what i've been spinning recently.

I'm going to only do one album per artist just so it's not just  the VdGG and Mars Volta's respected discographies.

1. Van der Graaf Generator-Pawn Hearts
2. The Mars Volta-Frances the Mute

after these two the order starts becoming unclear, so the last eight aren't really in order
3. Frank Zappa-hard to choose from his discography, but I'll go with Absolutely Free right now
4. Godspeed You! Black Emperor- F # A # Infinity
5. Giant Squid-Metridium Field
6. Mastodon-Leviathan
7. Alice in Chains-Dirt
8. Yann Tiersen- C'etait Ici
9. The Cure-Disintegration
10. King Crimson-again hard to choose, but for now I'll go with Larks' Tongues in Aspic

some others that could be on at any time
Pain Killer-Execution Ground
Rush-once again a tough choice but my overall favourite is probably Hemispheres, though lately i've been digging Vapor Trails, which I find quite underrated
Mr. Bungle-s/t
Faith No More-The Real Thing
AFI-Black Sails in the Sunset (probably no fans of that here)
Opeth-Morningrise
Iron Maiden-Brave New World
Naked City-s/t
Coheed and Cambria-In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
Explosions in the Sky-All of a Sudden I miss Everyone
Tool-Aenima
Yes-Relayer
ELP-Tarkus
Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here
Peter Hammill-In Camera
Clutch-Robot Hive/Exodus
Ayreon-The Human Equation
Wolves in the Throne Room-Two Hunters
Unexpect-In a Flesh Aquarium
Beastie Boys-Liscened to ill
Deep Purple-Made in Japan
Bad Religion-Generator
Jethro Tull-Aqualung
Sonic Youth-Daydream Nation
Chicago-Chicago Transit Authority
Miles Davis-Bitches Brew
John Zorn-Six Litanies for Heliogabalus

I'll stop there because I'm way beyond a top ten. Again, nothing's really definite beyond the first two al bums on the list. It's not even close to all being prog, but hey, good non prog music is existant and in abundance (just don't tell some people)
