FORGAS BAND PHENOMENA
Composer/ drummer Patrick Forgas has been hailed as "the French answer to the Canterbury scene" ever since his debut 1977 release Cocktail (recorded with members of Magma and Zao). Since the late 1990s, as leader of the Forgas Band Phenomena, he has helped ignite interest in Canterbury-infused jazz-rock among a new generation of young French jazz musicians and fans. Besides Forgas, all the musicians in the Forgas Band Phenomena are in their 20s or 30s, and they enliven his compositions with an energy and verve that make the music sound fresh. For Soleil 12, his 3rd Forgas Band Phenomena release (and his 1st release ever outside France), Forgas leads an 8 piece instrumental ensemble (dual saxes, trumpet, violin, guitar, keyboards, bass and drums) through epic-length, complex and melodic compositions that mix ambitious progressive rock structures and intense jazz soloing. Fusing new jazz directions with the most adventurous rock of the 70’s, the music should appeal to fans of Frank Zappa’s instrumental works and such British Canterbury bands as Soft Machine and National Health, as well as to followers of Magic Malik and other new jazz-rock and fusion bands. "Jazz-fusion, yes," remarked Progression, "but with a degree of compositional content and integrity often absent in the genre."

HUGH HOPPER 
A British bass player, studio/electronic musician, songwriter, composer, and improviser, Hugh Hopper is one of the most active, influential and respected figures on today’s international jazz-rock scene. In a career lasting over 40 years, beginning in the early 1960s and continuing today, Hopper has played and recorded with countless jazz, rock, and jazz/rock musicians around the globe, including every musician of the British Canterbury scene, and amassed a huge body of recorded work. Hopper was a central figure in the genesis of Canterbury School music, Britain’s most distinctive contribution to progressive jazz/rock, and he composed some its most memorable tunes; historian Aymeric Leroy, a Canterbury specialist, regards Hopper to be THE personification of the Canterbury school. Hopper also introduced some of the most avant-garde techniques into jazz/rock, attaching fuzz boxes to his bass and experimenting with tapes, soundscapes and electronic manipulations of sound. Indeed, Hopper is one of the world’s most distinctive and influential bass players in any genre: his signature fuzz bass sound, developed in the late sixties as a member of Soft Machine, had profound impact on psychedelic music, European jazz/rock and even ‘zeuhl’ (Magma) music of the day, and continues to resonate among young jazz/rock players today.

THE CLAUDIA QUINTET

Since John Hollenbeck first presented the band in an internet cafe on Avenue A in Manhattan in 1997, the Claudia Quintet has amazed audiences from Alabama to the Amazon. Their unique sound has inspired dancing hippie girls at a New Mexico noise festival, the avant-garde cognoscenti in the concert halls of Vienna and Sao Paolo, and a generation of young musicians worldwide. In the course of the thousands of miles they have traveled together and hundreds of concerts they've played, the Claudia Quintet has evolved and grown, developing a dynamic live sound based on trust and spontaneity. They bring this powerful energy into the studio, where they record the old-fashioned way, live, playing as a band. The legions of people who have been won over by the music of the Claudia Quintet live and on CD attest to the fact that genre-defying new music need not be "inaccessible." "For" is for everyone.

THE MICROSCOPIC SEPTET 
The music of The Microscopic Septet was the sound of jazz in 20th C. America: all of it, from Ellington to Ayler, bebop to Zorn, Dixieland to experimental, captured in a microcosm. It distilled the essence of jazz as a popular music into a sound that swung, a music that was intelligent, sometimes smart-aleck, and always good clean fun. Optimistic and upbeat, full of innocent confidence, the Microscopic Septet captured not only the sound of jazz, but also the sound – or soundtrack – of 20th Century America. No wonder, then, that when National Public Radio (NPR) needed a new theme song for one of its most popular shows, "Fresh Air, with Terry Gross", broadcast to every home in America, it asked this band to compose the tune and has used it ever since. 

Active from 1980-1992, The Microscopic Septet was part of New York’s emerging Downtown Music Scene, a diverse group of artists on the fringes of jazz, rock, and improv that would converge in the Knitting Factory when the club opened in 1987. But while the band shared an aesthetic for breaking down genres boundaries with such other Downtown bands as Curlew, Massacre, and Material; shared the goal of creating intelligent music that could be danced to with Curlew, and shared stylistic surface elements (retro sound, stage costumes and attitude) with the Jazz Passengers and Lounge Lizards, the Micros, as the band was familiarly called, neither sounded like nor was directly comparable to any one of the Downtown bands. More inclusive than even the barrier-breaking downtown crowd, the Micros shared elements with all these bands – and more.

ALEC K. REDFEARN [Solo] 
A composer, accordionist, songwriter, free improviser and performance artist, Alec K. Redfearn was born in Massachusetts. While a teenager in the mid-1980s, he listened to hardcore (The Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Butthole Surfers) and metal (Slayer, Metallica), and played bass in Wavering Shapes, an SST influenced band. Redfearn moved to Providence in the late 1980s, becoming involved in the AS220 arts and performance collective. He began playing self-taught accordion around 1990, while a member of Meatball Fluxus, "a Dada, Fluxist performance art group that also did free improvisational music, and…some Cageian things." He was attracted to the accordion’s "confrontational sound" (his own words); bored with grunge rock, "this lazy revisionist early 1970s thing that was mostly about posturing," as well as "the twee-pop thing," he wanted to distance himself from the early-90s rock music that was then considered hip. Redfearn began listening to folk music, intrigued by the stripped–down versions of English, Irish, French and Appalachian folk songs played by Providence’s Smiling Dog Band, and began "moving away from…Palmer Hughes tunes and towards these weird b*****dizations of Morris Dance tunes and Irish tunes." He listened to gypsy music in all its global variations, drawn to its scales, "almost like Turkish and Arabic music," and its intersections with Western music (dance/polkas from Germany and the Czech Republic), as well as listening to a world of other musics outside the contemporary spotlight. In 1990 he started an absurdist "miniature industrial" ensemble called Space Heater, which evolved into the Amoebic Ensemble. Redfearn composed the bulk of the Amoebic’s music, which used a mix of classical, rock, and folk instrumentation and was influenced by Weimar Republic composers as well as traditional European folk music, free jazz, and punk. Redfearn says that: "the early glimmerings of the noise explosion in Providence made me say, I could take the music I’m doing now, which was…a mix of circus-y music and all of the folk music I’d been listening to, and then combine it with punk and make it aggressive in the same way those noise bands are…"

Post-rock’s magical/"folk" surrealists, Alec K. Redfearn and the Eyesores are based in Providence, Rhode Island, fertile ground for horror writers (H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Alan Poe, Jonathan Thomas), Italian Mafioso, academics (Brown University), colorful politicians (Buddy Cianci) and artists of all stripes (Rhode Island School of Design/RISD). The band’s music captures that city’s essence, blurring the lines between past and present, fiction and fact, shrouding dark secrets. Simultaneously beautiful and horrific, elegant and lowbrow, playful and cynical, its sound crosses genres as easily as a ghost floats through solid walls.
