Hi All:

I was thinking that one way to help improve the site would be to increase the use of the sticky pin option for important topics.  I was discussing with Ivan regarding threads that HT and him created promoting symphonic or neo bands that had a handful of posts and then disappeared to the graveyard of lost threads.

For example, in the prog recommendations section, there is a sticky note thread for prog metal team additions.  I think that each genre should have a similar thread to promote the new additions done by those genre teams.

I believe these threads are in the prog forum thread, but most, if not all, of the genres have an appreciation thread.  These would be good threads to have sticky notes which might help promote discussions of new bands in these genres amongst those that are interested in those genres and the general population.  The regulars might know that these are good threads to go to, but the less frequent site users who are here looking for suggestions or information may not.

Another example might be for concept albums or prog epics.  I have seen numerous threads started asking for suggestions for concept albums or prog epic recommendations.  Maybe a sticky note thread could be started for these subjects similar to the free download thread.  i.e. people can suggest songs or albums for inclusion and the first post can be updated occasionally to include the suggestions until a somewhat master list is created.

Obviously, the sticky notes can be used for many other items as well.  What do you think of this idea?  Do you have suggestions for other threads that might be good to have sticky notes?

No problem at all with more use of the function. The Admin team use the facility for our own threads, but we need to be guided by our collaborators when making others sticky.

We don't want to end up with pages of sticky threads, as that defeats the purpose, so a certain amount of discipline would be needed to:
- Ensure only threads which really need to be sticky are made so
- That once a sticky thread has served its purpose, it returns to being normal.

As for the mechanics, the best way to go about it is simply to drop a PM to any member of the admin team, with a link to the thread to be stickied, stuck sticked or whatever.

Is it possible to upgrade the forum engine so each member could customize the "stickyness" of the desired thread? That would be nice...

It would be nice - and result in exactly the situations that the admin team is trying to avoid. See Bob's post above for a description. Wink

No, I meant the topic will appear sticky only to a particular member who adjusted his personal forum settings his way...

That would require functionality changes to be made to the forum, which would take longer to implement. I understand what you're saying though, and it does make sense and have merit.

The original proposal however can be implemented now.Wink

Gotcha Clarke - that would be an interesting option that indeed requires the modifications Bob references.

I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to write a greasemonkey script to do that.

Greasemonkey is a FireFox add-on which allows you to modify the appearance of webpages by downloading and running user-developed scripts.  I'm certainly no coder, but judging by what people have been able to do with those things, it might be possible that someone could come up with a script allowing users to sticky and unsticky topics from their perspective.
