RIO:
Captain Beefheart... - Trout Mask Replica
Frank Zappa - Zappa In New York
Universe Zero - Heresie

Krautrock:
Neu! - Neu! (first one)
Amon Duul II - Phallus Dei

I know more about Krautrock than the other two subgenres...but for Zeuhl I would say Udu Wudu is a good starting place for Magma.  Anything from Henry Cow and Univers Zero is good for RIO.  For Krautrock you should start with the following...
Ash Ra Tempel-Ash Ra Tempel
Amon Duul II- Yeti
Can- Future Days
Popol Vuh- Hosianna Mantra
"Science is all metaphor"-Timothy Leary

Eskaton - 4 Visions
Dün - Eros

RIO/Avant:

Frank Zappa - Burnt Weeny Sandwich
Henry Cow - Legend

Stormy Six - L'Apprendista
Miriodor - Elastic Juggling

Kraut:

Amon Düül II - Phallus Dei
Can - Tago Mago
Faust - Faust IV

but if you want to get your brain scambled immediately:

Zeuhl:

Koenjihyakkei - Angherr Shisspa
Happy Family - Toscco

RIO/Avant:

Univers Zero - Heresie, Ceux du Dehors
Frank Zappa - Uncle Meat
Mr Bungle - Disco Volante
Ahvak - Ahvak

Faust - Faust

Since I'm totally ignorant about these three categories I'd appreciate if you could give some recommendations of nice starter albums, and why that/those albums are so fantastic. Just pour em' over me LOL!
