Such a difficult call. I've been on this Earth 48 years and my favorites to date are: -
Randy Rhodes
Alex Lifeson
John Petrucci
Al diMeola
Richie Blackmore
There we are - not so difficult after all. I thought I would add Randy - he died too soon as far as I was concerned - he would have established himself as one of the most accomplished players ever!!!

For a god of all guitar gods, a Zeus I'll have to go with John Pettruchi of Dream Theater. His solos are full of mode changes not just pentatonic - dorian minor to eolian minor stuff, but harmonic minors, diminished scales, chromatic scales... Man if you look at some of his solo runs he would encompas several mode changes in a span of only 4-5 bars... This guy is a genious......

Well, let's see...
There's...
Alex Lifeson (Rush)
John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
Frederik Thorendal (Meshuggah)
Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth)
Steve Hackett/Steve Howe (Genesis/Yes)
Chris DeGarmo (Queensryche)
Brian May (Queen)
Frank Zappa
Mind you; those are in no particular order, and there's probably more that simply haven't sprung to mind.
Cheers, and welcome to the Archives!!!!!

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (The Mars Volta)
Frank Zappa
Robert Fripp (King Crimson)
Alex Lifeson (Rush)
As you can tell from the list, I'm not too much into shredders, I go more for people with really idiosyncratic approaches to the instrument, and who while not technically the best, still do really amazing things.
my favourite band of all timeis Van der Graaf Generator and while I'll freely admit that Peter Hammill is not the greatest guitar player, his style suits the music and on the last album he picks up the slack left by the absence of David Jackson's sax more than adequately.

I wonder what the consensus opinion would be if we were to ask this question of 100 of the top guitarists?
For what it's worth, I really like the style of Dave Gilmour and Andy Latimer. Whilst I appreciate the technical brilliance of someone like Petrucci, his playing doesn't touch me in the way the aforementioned artists do. I have a lot of time for Jon Preston Bouda from Discipline too. Honourable mention for Buck Dharma from Blue Oyster Cult who is respnosible for two of my favourite ever guitar solos...Astronomy from Some Enchanted Evening and Veteran of the Psychic Wars from Extraterrestrial Live.

I must have read this thread too quickly, I could have sworn that nobody has mentioned Jeff Beck...(and shockingly few mentions of Steve Howe!).
While he never played in a "prog" band per se, he has always been a truly progressive player - very inventive melodically, and seems to reinvent himself every few years while still being unmistakably Jeff Beck...Check out Guitar Shop, Flash, and any of his stuff with Jan Hammer...
I'd say....
Jeff Beck Steve Howe Brian May Jimi Hendrix (standard disclaimer: he almost joined ELP!) Steve Vai - to see him live is essential for anyone who loves guitar - it's like the instrument is just an alternate voice box for him...

are there really 'prog guitar gods' ? ..I don't know, seems prog distinguishes itself as a form requiring no guitar gods but rather a collective ensemble of gods and demi-gods.. that said, Steve Howe is one of the most accomplished players in rock history, Hackett too, and I love Gilmour's playing
