About John Lee Hooker and Dizzie Gillepsie, are we talking about ALBUMS or RECORDS? Remember all the 78rpm and 45rpm some artistes can release. Same thing about Merzbow: some of his records are some singles.
Moreover, we're also talking about artists recording under their name, right? Because if we're also talking about participations of guest-artists, Fred Frith must be on the list. I think Bill Laswell has a big discography, thanks to the many studio sessions he had been involved in. |

50-60 years worth when take into account being a sidesman, for instance with Dizzie Gillespie in the 40's.

Well, Klaus Schulze must have well over fifty. Is it fair to count VDGG along with Hammill solo albums? If we do so we would be close to that amount. All of his albums are good, something that can´t be said about other prolific album makers.

Agree with the Miles Davis suggestion, if you like jazz and fusion. There's 40-50 years worth of music there.

1% of the artists has 95% of the total albums in there I think. Take Wakeman, Zappa, Residents, Tangerine Dream, and you have about six years of music...

I have 62 albums by Rick Wakeman (Solo only, not counting Yes or ABWH, etc.) and I know I'm still missing at least a dozen.

Reducing the question to prog artists, I think that those are the main artists.
Outside Prog, the first one I remember is John Lee Hooker.
