Topic: An Idea I had... Posted: November 29 2008 at 18:39 |
Here's some disclaimers before I actually talk about my idea:
1. I don't know if anyone's talked about this before on the forums, so it would be good to know if anyone else has presented the same idea in the past. 2. Am I in the right section? I'm pretty sure I am, but if I'm not, please move this thread somewhere else...
Ok, onto the idea. Lately, many people on PA have seen artists that have some Prog tendencies and ideas get on this website, and many have been upset or confused (I'm wondering how bands like Metallica and Steely Dan got onto this website, but that's another discussion). I was thinking: why not have a section called "General Exceptions" or something similar that has artists that generally aren't Prog, but they released maybe one or two albums that would fit any of the prog categories we have on the website? One possible example is Megadeth's Rust In Peace. I think that album has a lot of prog metal in it, but I don't think any of their other albums do, so just put Rust In Peace in the "General Exceptions" (or whatever, I have no clue as to what it would be called) section and not have any other album by Megadeth put in there because the rest of their discography does not fit the qualifications of any prog genre on this website. Same thing would apply with IMO (I'm sure everyone would have their own examples) Metallica's first four albums or some albums by Todd Rundgren.
If anyone has any criticisms about my idea or thinks that my idea sucks, please tell them to me. If anyone has no clue as to what I was talking about because I may have presented my idea poorly, please say. Do discuss...

Nothing wrong with the idea, except that it won't work. Lots of us have suggested something similar but there is a problem.
Because the site includes an artist's entire discography if ONE of their albums is prog, we'd have to go back and sort through all the present artists and eliminate some of their albums. Take GENESIS, for example. Some here would remove every album after Gabriel left, while others would take out Abacab and those following - and so on. A thousand small wars would erupt, and a hundred senior members would resign in protest.
So - good idea, but not practical. But keep thinking!

| Not so sure about that, Russell. I thought about that problem too, but I think there's a way around it.
Genesis is not a band that would have one or two "general exceptions," you know? They have at least seven solid progressive rock albums (many of which are considered masterpieces).
Journey, on the other hand, has a couple of albums with prog leanings at best. I just don't see how Raised on Radio, for instance, has any business on this website whatsoever. So a "General Exceptions" category would be perfect.
I'm thinking about Miles Davis right about now...

^ Abacab is a brilliant album!! Point taken though and a good suggestion if only to eliminate some peoples paranoia or concerns that this would become an allmusic/rateyourmusic site for controversial additions

Good point you raised. Here's a compromise: we leave all of the artists we've already put on this website alone (maybe not for artists that have been put on here within the last few months) and we use this rule for every new artist put on here.
