Melancholic lyrics with an aggressive edge in the chorus, and a touch of mystery.
Friendly melody lines which contrast nicely with some more brooding other parts of the album.
The chords are strong and melancholic as well.
The sound / production is original and creates an intense atmosphere (which goes for all of Foxtrot).
It's also catchy in a way and nice to sing along, though not overtly commercial.
Early Genesis were not only masters in writing epics, but also in writing more radio - friendly tunes which were artistically credible as well.
I love Time Table |
Thanks for the explanation. I don't hear it that way myself. I hear simplistic, overly precious lyrics that I find particularly poor for Genesis, a plodding melody that isn't catchy to my ears at all, and a dull and lifeless arrangement. "Twee" is the single word that comes to mind most for me with this song. I will agree that the general atmosphere of the song is consistent with the rest of the album, but it doesn't save the song for me.
I hope our different feelings about this song will help illustrate the absolute pointlessness of "over" and "under" rated threads

It's all just opinions, after all.
