Subject: Favourite Song With a "Keyboards Intro"
Date Posted: October 28 2014 at 21:30
I'm opening this thread with a vote to Triumvirat - Broken Mirror, today it is my favourite among these, for its stunning melodies! , and the awesome piano intro is a plus.
By the way I regarded only songs starting with standard keyboards (no synthesizer sounds).
I would like pretty much to know people's preferences, and I'm guessing the option 'others' is surely going to be quite useful here.
Go ahead please!

John Tout's piano excursion at the beginning of Running Hard defines his style and contribution to the band; even more, it does a lot to define the sound of the whole band.

Usually I don't like voting on the "other" option, but in this case I must. "Awaken", from Yes, shouldn't have been forgotten, one of my favourite songs and one of my favourite piano intro's (specially the live version on Keys to Ascension).

This is a very hard one: Man-erg, Firth of 5th, Running Hard, Magic Train and Fool's Overture make a handful of excellent tracks. Three of these are my favourites by their respective bands.
I cut the tie and vote for Grobschnitt, because their piano intro is my favourite of these five.

Missing from this list, in my opinion, is Boston's Foreplay/Long Time. Monumental among the rest. I know, I know - it's not prog, but could you imagine what a whole album built around Foreplay would have sounded like? I once heard a rumor that Boston copied the song from an Italian prog band. If true, I wish I knew who the band was.

very ELPish so I go for Le Orme
Kansas - The Spider is also an instrumental track in a similar vein although probably doesn't qualify for the thread as the keyboard is accompanied.

If we talk of classic prog songs, the intro to ELP's "Take a Pebble" deserves a mention. However, when I first saw the title of this thread, I immediately thought of Deep Purple's "Highway Star". Jon Lord's Hammond is simply killer on that song.

Then I'm one more here that falled in this 'brilliant trap', set by the magic Keith! Damned! I eagerly wanted to include some track of my favourite band in this thread, besides TAP frankly I was not sure of including also the part 2 of The Endless Enigma - it seemed to me that some drums beat accompanied the very first notes of that such an elegant GRAND piano - silly of me for not ignoring just mere details, since those incredible 2 minutes close majestically one of the most (if not the most) fantastic prog rock compositions I ever listened to!

ahhh. but the beauty of it is Rick .. it is completely flipped in our case. Behind every great woman is a wonder man comfortable to let his wife shine. Raff is the star, she is the one the bands know, she writes the well regarded reviews, I just stand back in the shadows and comfort her and encourage her when inspiration gets low or real life drains the creative energy. She has the talent, I just have ... well .. nothing. It is why in the larger community I am (proudly) known as Mr. Raff. I like that, it suits my non-online personna very well. I like to watch, to observe rather than actively participate.

I voted others, just to have an excuse to mention:
"The Prophet". One of Tony Kaye's finest hours.
"Lazy"--Jon Lord certainly isn't, especially on the "Made In Japan" version.
"For Your Love"--Brian Augur's immortal four chords.

Actually, technically speaking - Piano is a percussion instrument: The hammers hit the strings. This is what I was taught in an all-around percussion course in college. i would think that a piano is a keyboard whether the strings are played percussively or by the bites of tiny mice it still has the primary requesite things that makes it a keyboard (CLUE : they are black and white)

Even if both have keys, a piano and a pipe organ are two compleyely different instruments. It's true that if you learn how to press the keys on a piano you are advantaged in learning organ, but the techniques are not the same. Electronic keyboards are derived mainly from organ in principles, but they can produce the sound of a piano, as well as strings, brasses, percussions and flutes, helicopters, storms and so on. I don't remember the name of that instrument used in schools which has black and white keys but you have to blow in it. Concertina is more similar to a pipe organ than a piano. If piano is allowed, Can you Understand by Renaissance is one of the best intros that I know

I've always considered the piano a keyboard instrument, regardless of the way the sound is generated, because of.. well.. the keys, right? You don't pluck the strings or beat them with hand-held hammers. You press keys to play, so in my opinion that makes it a keyboard instrument. I mean... you've got the Hammond organ, which utilizes tonewheels to produce the sound, the Rhodes piano with its tines and all the electronic keyboards/samplers/romplers, not to mention the Mellotron. You know what they all have in common? The keyboards? So... naturally, they're keyboard instuments, right? I agree, the piano is technically a string/percussive instrument.... but that doesn't eliminate the fact that it's also keyboard based.

Keith Emerson plucks the strings, too.
The main difference between a piano and an organ is that an organ note can last as long as you want. You can't do it with a piano. The weight of the keys is different, and even if an accordion has keys, too, the three are not the same thing. An excellent pianist is not necessarily an excellent organist and vice/versa. A piano solo and an organ solo are never the same thing. You can ask your synth to produce the sound of a piano, but this is another story. Playing accordion on C'est la Vie for Keith Emerson has been probably simpler than how it could have been for Greg Lake, but it's all. Accordion has a keyboard but is not a keyboard.
