Finally after 2 months we have reached the end.  It has been a lot of fun everyone. Thanks to everyone for participating and making it all a bunch of fun.

64 entered.. 2 remain.

In the far corner.. we have the king of 'progressive' Rock. LOL

The Machine.. aka..PINK FLOYD!! Clap

In the near corner.. we have the king of Prog Rock.

KING CRIMSON!! Clap

Vegas has installed The Machine as a 11.5 vote favorite.. .can King Crimson pull the upset. Not likely but surprises can happen, though they rarely do on PA's LOL

and the first of many votes for Floyd...  I love so many of their albums

King Crimson? Respect the hell out of them.. but I count what I love from them in terms of number of songs.. not albums.

Floyd by miles.

However innovative, technical and influential KC are - and they undeniably are - I find much of their music unpleasant to listen to.

Floyd also produced some stuff I don't like, but their run of good to amazing albums from Atom Heart Mother to Animals is so far beyond anything KC did that it is no contest for me.

Let's see...

Thriller > Like A Virgin
Hotel California > Bat Out Of Hell
Star Wars > Star Trek
Pepsi > Coca-Cola

So, Crimson it is.

IMO Crimso never stooped as low as albums like TFC and AMLOR, which I consider solo albums and not 'Pink Floyd' albums.

As great a final as one could hope for. Of all bands/artists represented here on PA these are two of the most innovative and influential bands of Progressive Rock.

King Crimson for me. Everything they did 69-74 is very special to me.

well I don't know about the unpredictable part hahahaha.. but it was fun.

Just an appetizer though for the Battle of the Albums.. we've already invested a lot of time into putting that together and there is still a lot more to be done. This was something I threw together on a lark.. the album contest is getting a lot more input and thought into the composition of it.

Clear choice for me: Pink Floyd. KC is not one of my absolute favorites but they're still essential. Floys is top 5 for me, however.

It was a tough choice but in the end I went with Floyd, though I like more albums from KC, they've never quite matched Wish You Were Here and Animals.

Voting from my Atom Heart....by the way which one is Pink?

The trifecta of TDSOTM, WYWH, and Animals was amazing!

KC gets the respect though, but most often not entirely my cup of tea.

Well, the Le Orme vs Rush was unpredictable even if Rush won in the end, or the fact that the final is not Yes vs Genesis Tongue

Cool, can't wait Thumbs Up

yeah true...  as I posted earlier.. at the start I had Yes v. Genesis penciled into the final in my bracket. I did have JT and KC going out in the first round to far superior bands. ELP making all the way to Floyd and going down in an epic battle LOL  Oh well.. so yeah.. I guess it was unpredictable.  Those early rounds were a hoot. Always the most fun in these kinds of contests before the blue bloods assert their dominance.

KC.  Had they not had the Red album in their vast discog, my vote would have been different.  But with Red, they added a visceral rawness that was never really a part of Floyd's arsenal.

Floyd were my first love, they were then supplanted by Crimson, both are still top 5 for me. Crimson just get the edge for me.

That the final isn't Yes vs Genesis makes me very very happy.

Great competition Micky, well done (Univers Zero were robbed)

Agreed. Floyd was my gateway drug into the world of progressive rock. After having discovered Floyd I was loaned a copy of "A Young Person's Guide to King Crimson," still remember that funky album cover. At any rate, the album was a complete revelation, and since that time King Crimson has been the pinnacle of prog rock for me.

Floyd were my first love and demonstrated their writing talents on a number of great albums,

... but ...

King Crimson's music has a longer-lasting effect. And they came around on my radar about the same time Floyd did ... and not only have they demonstrated their writing talents on a number of great albums, but ... they are also chopsmen, for christ's sake.

Gotta be the latter.

Pink Floyd. They simply have far more albums I care about compared to Crimson. King Crimson is quite uneven, even in their best albums (the interminable tinkling of Moonchild, the long indefinite noodling of Providence, etc.), and Floyd trumps Crimson in the actual songwriting category, it's not even close.

King Crimson.

I've always liked Floyd, liked Floyd a great deal, but I never got to loving them, with all due respect. I do love Lizard, Lark's Tongues, Starless and Bible Black, and Discipline, and I finally got the sort of guitar orgy I was always looking for with Space Groove. Besides, a vote for Crimson is a show of respect for Genesis who they slightly edged out in the semi-final.

I love Floyd, and maybe a year ago my vote would have been different, but going with KC. None of their albums I loved (or hardly liked) on first listen, but after a few listens and some time, they've always revealed themselves to me and become high up in my favorites.

One thing is for sure: this site has changed a lot (mostly for the betterSmile) in the past few years. Five years ago, this contest might well have had Dream Theater in the lead, or have ended up with an unsurprising Yes vs Genesis match-up. Kudos to everyone for shaking things upClap!

As much as I love the music of both, there are passages from KC that move me more, that get under my skin and into my higher faculties, as well as my lizard brain, than anything in the PF catalog.  Good contest.  I expected another Genesis/Yes bout, and am pleasantly surprised to have seen it go in a different direction.  What a difference a couple of years and varying the contests make!

Thanks Ian! UZ didn't get robbed.. not like a certain group did at least LOL

I see we at least have a competitive match for the final. A good way to end it.

Top 5 2014-15 PA's Battle of Bands moments:

1) the rematch: Camel edges ELP
2) Italian power: Le Orme takes Rush to the limit in a opening round shocker. (thread also gave us the comment of the tournament!

Where was Le Orme when you were squeezing pimples in your teenage bathroom, looking for guidance to summon the courage to approach that pretty girl in your class?  Who but Neil Peart could give you the courage to say THE HELL WITH GIRLS I'M GONNA WITHDRAW INTO MY FANTASY WORLD ?

3) too little too late: Ivan breaks the Riverside-Samla Mammas Manna tie by voting for SMM... 2 hours after the poll closed and Riverside edged SSM on a bullsh*t tierbreaker AngryLOL

4) Freaks over Geeks:  The Gong army showed its muscle and knocked out Rush in a bitter razor thin 1 vote decision

5) bye bye flavor of the months:  Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater unceremoniously kicked out of the tournament in the opening round.

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Up. If "prog" is going to have anything to do with innovation, KC should be winning this. PF have made a ton of fantastic music, but IMO they stopped innovating in the 1970s.

LOLLOLLOL

ahh... don't we have a 100 different threads for that already.. take that sh*t somewhere else LOL

funny thing.. the finale is a bit of damp squib for me as I wouldn't consider myself a passionate fan of either. I love Floyd albums but don't hold them up as paradigms of the Prog Rock medium. I do consider them 'progressive' rock fitting the site of course, but a different animal than groups like King Crimson.

take this for example. It drips the truth man, it is the reason why it achieved the popularity it did. It stripped out the prog.. and left the progressive.

'The Dark Side of the Moon' (1973)

Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd's eighth album, more or less, was a symbolic break from their past -- the moment where their long, drawn-out prog tendencies gave way to tighter, shorter and more focused "song"-oriented tracks. And they marked the occasion with their best concept album

However for my better half... she is into this... makes me wish I hadn't voted yet. I would have cast my vote for her. Lord knows she did her part for me... hell SHE.. like big Rush fan herself.. voted for Gong. You know.. Gong won by one vote. LOL

In lieu of my vote, already cast, you PA's can do your part to honor not just THE king of Prog Rock. Fripp himself along with a cast of revolving musicians ...called King Crimson, and vote for King Crimson, but also my dear wife who unlike me has been sweet and kind to all you fools.  This is Prog Archives you know.. not progressive archives. Wink

That is, if you negate every band that came before Crimson. If one takes that into account, then the real answer would be Syd Barrett, who also invented psychedelia, guacamole and the Chia pet.

since I wrote the test... I know the questions.  Missing one immediated DQ's members from voting in polls.

1) Is ELP the better band than Camel?
2) Is PFM the better band than Jethro Tull?
3) Does Genesis music put you to sleep?

no... no written test. We have lots of non English writers here.  The reason we got stuck with the ratings for reviews. We do have non English writers here. Just think how much fun this would to have 100's of Mandrakeroot reviews here run through online translators LOL We are all encompassing here.

Simple test... 3 easy yes-no questions. Miss one... and you shouldn't be able to vote here LOL

I simply refuse to take any tests. They tried to do that to me in school and I walked out and went to the record store instead. I've been there ever since.

since I wrote the test... I know the questions.  Missing one immediated DQ's members from voting in polls.

1) Is ELP the better band than Camel?
2) Is PFM the better band than Jethro Tull?
3) Does Genesis music put you to sleep?

#1 is indeed ELP, but for some reason people keep voting for the 2nd tier band named after unfiltered cigarettes.

#2 is a trick question. The Italian wedding band is only better than Tull in the labyrinthine, cob-webbed corridors of Micky's muddled mind.

#3 is also a trick question because you have to be anesthetized to enjoy Genesis.

A surprisingly easy vote for King Crimson for me.  Both bands are great and to be honest I probably prefer Pink Floyd, but my vote had to go to KC for being the better progressive rock band.

I don't know about being in the lead but a few years ago they would certainly have got a lot further than the first round, and only a year ago a Yes/Genesis final would have been an absolute shoe in.

Unfortunately a lot of the appreciation for the metal side of prog seems to have disappeared as well.Ouch

Many of them have moved over to MMA. I see them a lot more there than here, where some of them are virtually absent.

I haven't heard of either of these musicians. Where should I start? Were they previously in popular bands?

Yes indeed- Robert Fripp of King Crimson is indeed THE Robert Fripp of that iconic band of the 20th century, universally adored by screaming fangirls and the cognoscenti alike, Giles Giles & Fripp!

But anyway, Floyd makes it for me. Thanks for a good competition, Micky!
