The 60's and 70's period is a timeframe i need to look further into. While i typically enjoy more modern music, i still feel like im missing out on more lesser-known bands of the decades.

As KC's debut has already been mentioned by quite a few people, I'll choose some lesser-known (but equally outstanding) albums:

The Pentangle - s/t (1968)
High Tide - Sea Shanties (1969)
East of Eden - Mercator Projected (1969)

Ignoring Proto and non-PA stuff...

Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Caravan - s/t
Amon Duul II - Phallus Dei

I find with '60s music most artists get a lot better after their debut.

Not a big fan of the debuts from the main prog contingent though I do like Caravan's debut.

Atomic Rooster, The Nice and Yes. Very difficult to leave out great debuts by The Doors and of course KC, but the latter gets enough love and let's face it the jam on Moonchild is tedious.

EDIT: Just realised the Rooster came out in early 70, though recording started in late 69. I love it so I'm keeping it in!

I plan on doing each decade :]

What are people's thoughts on Caravan's debut?

Fantastic band of course, but does everyone think they became "the band" after this record?

This is what happens when you raise kids on prog. They develop a taste in music, and can name their personal top 10 before they can count to 5. LOL

They were pretty well put together to start with, and the masterfullness of If I Could Do It All Over Again and For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night was just building off of the as such excellent debut. Beautiful record.

Perfect title for the thread.  Man, I need to go back and listen to more 60's stuff, but I'm absolutely in love with these:

- Chicago Transit Authority - s/t
- Led Zep - I
- King Crimson - In the Court

Can and Hendrix were also really strong contenders.

Finally appreciation for my brilliant thread title. Like no other! LOL

Also i'm surprised by the lack of Monster Movie on lists. Come on people, every track on that is a hit. Doesn't feel at all as a debut effort.

Delay's itself pretty good, though, so they clearly had something going for them.

Hi,

This is difficult.

When I went from Madison (WI) to Santa Barbara (CA) in 1971, I took with me, in my bag, ten albums, which did not amuse my mom, but these were too personal and important for me. Included were Jimi's Are You Experienced, Big Brother and the Holding Company's Cheap Thrills, Led Zeppelin 1, The Doors, and Iron Butterfly's In a Gadda da Vida.

These were the "formative" albums for my tastes. The next year I met up with the European stuff a lot better and eventually got into them full blast by 1974, since, by that time Jimi and Janis were gone, and a lot of the emotional strength that brought them to us, was totally gone and already was being replaced by commercial success.

Other albums that should be listed here would be It's a Beautiful Day (1st), Moody Blues's Days of Future Passed which deserves a mention as one of the best albums ever, CTA (Chicago 1) which was special for me, since I almost had my head beatup in Chicago, and KC's first.

I came across KC's first album and Fairport Convention on the same day in Madison at a party, but while FC clicked, the KC album had not as yet, although I had heard "Epitath" and knew that it was written by a poet, not a rock star! to me, this was IMPORTANT, because it made the rock music lyrics more valuable all around, however, this is not a distinction that others share these days, and almost anything is a "poem" these days, including the shape of ...  Big smile

Thanks, this is way to hard.
Pink Floyd - Piper
King Crimson - ItCotKC

Really stuck on the third one. Between Hendrix, MoI, The Doors, MC5, or Santana.
I'll go with Hendrix.

Hi,

Although not a progressive album, we have got to include "CHEAP THRILLS" in this list, because it was one of the most bombastic of albums. The guitar alone in "Ball and Chain" was a lesson for the likes of Jimmy and Dave and others! And that voice ... that just blew out along with the guitar!

Only three? Thirty-three would be a hard choice!

Well, let me think...

“Pure” prog:

King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King (1969)

Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967)

Can - Monster Movie (1969)

Non-prog:

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin (1969)

Grand Funk Railroad - On Time (1969)

Steppenwolf - Steppenwolf (1968)
