This was harder than I thought.

Second half of the 80s had some great metal, but I just put some albums I think might appeal to non-metal listeners (Queensryche, Savatage, Iron Maiden, FW, King's X, DT). If you want to mention some metal albums of this period, you are more than welcome to do it. Same thing with hard rock.

Some neo-prog suggestions are welcome as well.

Anyway, the "other " option for those who dislike my options.

Living Colour's Vivid, even if I think that Time's Up (1990) is better.

From the list Perfect Symmetry and Somewhere In Time stand out for me along with Operation Mindcrime.
Heatwave by UZ might be my fav from this period along with Thule's Ultima Thule. I'll mention Sylvian's Secrets Of The Beehive which is such a cool record and another Fates Warning album Awaken The Guardian.

Hmmm. I wanted to vote for Marillion first, but I decided to give my vote to Gabe's So in the end. I was uncertain which from these two to choose anyway and as So has less votes I gave it one more :-)

Tough call for me between Peter Gabriel and Marillion. I listen to Clutching at Straws much more than So now. But, So was much more impactful for me at the time. Went with So...

Waters' Radio KAOS was (is) his most cohesive effort, so I went with it. Although highly enjoyable, Gabriel's So was tainted by Anderson's and Bush's contributions and easy-listening airplay. Anyone voting for it should be wearing a dress (and I'm sure some are).

The one thing that is more odd than me voting for a non-prog album on this site is the presence of one on a poll.  Living Colour's Vivid was such a dose of fresh air in an often dismal period for music it stands out, and not just because of Vernon Reid's unbelievable if chaotic guitar playing but also for the awesome rhythm section of Muzz Skillings and Will Calhoun, not to mention Corey Glover's great vocals.  It was so defining for them almost all of it ended up on their best of album from 2006, Everything is Possible.  Special mention goes to Hold Your Fire and So, two other great albums from the list.

Easy. AMLOR, one of their most criticized album but imo, their best since Animals and beyond. Probably would've voted for Swans if it was there.

I'll youtube the stuff I don't know from your list.

That Sting album is from 1991, I had it on cassette when it came out LOL But I can't stand listening to Sting these days, I do listen to The Police though. Does it make sense? LOL

Yeah it was recorded in 1990 and then released in January 1991. To me, The Soul Cages is a real progressive album, although I'm sure that most people consider it to be 'just' a 'pop' album.

I love Dream Of The Blue Turtles, Bring On The Night and The Soul Cages. But Sting's other albums don't do much for me. I love everything that The Police released. Their live albums are great too. The reunion tour was really good, much better than I expected.

I'd take Rush's Presto over Hold Your Fire any day, so I'll vote other.

But from the poll, I pick Iron Maiden. Somewhere in Time is one of their best imo.

Clutching at Straws. Although Talk Talk Spirit Of Eden is one I really need to check out sometime. The others I'm either not much a fan of or have no interest in. Slim pickings here.

Spirit Of Eden, easily. The fact alone that an album from the late 80s can sound so refreshing and timeless is quite a feat.

However, I admit it's a period I'm not generally fond of, but as always greater things might lurk in the obscurity...
Any recommendations for late 80s albums not marred by the usual suspects
- i. e. plastic overproduction, gated drums and cheap synthesizers - of the era ?

Thanks ! Smile

(FYI, I only know of great RIO around that time, Art Zoyd, Univers Zero, Thinking Plague, Lars Hollmer, News From Babel, and obviously Offering...
The Dukes Of Stratosphear is incredible, but hey, it was made to sound like a 60s time capsule) ~

Nothing here really comes close to "So". Every track on that album is excellent, apart from "Excellent Birds" ironically...
