Carlton is the ultimate studio guitarist - he can play anything and plays it perfectly with everything in its proper place, but impressive as that is, that is the problem.  My vote is going for the more rough and soulful uberjam style of Scofield. whose technique is just as good.

Maybe you can list some key tracks by each? I only know a few tunes by Scofield ("Flower Power" springs to mind, which is a really cool track). I'd like to have a listen, before I vote Big smile

Great Poll! Tough decision. My future in jazz started when an older guitarist told me to get Scofield's Loud Jazz, Blue Matter and Still Warm albums. Life altering at my impressionable young age. Dennis Chambers and Gary Grainger set the gold standard for rhythmic tightness on Loud and Blue. Having Steve Swallow produce... sheer excellence.

I actually enjoy Larry's current activity. That duet album with Steve Lukather that won Favored Nations and Vai the Grammy for producer was immensely pleasurable. Greg Bissonette killed it on the drums behind them, too!

Ahhh!  Tough decision....

I'm going Scofield, though.
