We all probably remember radio programs like the King Biscuit Flower Hour or the BBC radio programs that featured prog bands giving a performance. But I remember as a child also hearing hour-long (or longer) radio "documentaries" about certain bands (Rush for instance), with interviews, songs played, etc. Seemed to come on once a week. Anyone remember what they were called? And are there any classic radio 'documentaries' (for want of a better word) about the prog genre itself, the history of prog, etc.? I would love to get a hold of programs such as this...

There's that Canterbury Tales II  Romantic Warriors III dvd all about the Canterbury Scene now and before. You can only purchase it as a dvd (I believe..) but I've been wanting to see it for a while.

For documentaries strictly about the prog genre itself... Eh, not really. Just specific bands (I saw one on Van der Graaf, it's all up on Youtube), Genesis had the awful Sum of the Parts, and Anthony Phillips (my favorite composer ever) talks about the beginnings of Genesis (The Anthony Phillips Story on Youtube).

This is the Romantic Warriors documentary series website: http://www.progdocs.com" rel="nofollow - http://www.progdocs.com . All three films (I, II, and III) and a bonus feature DVD for the RW II - About RIO can also be purchased in there, and I believe Zeitgeist Media is working on a bonus feature DVD to accompany the RWIII - Canterbury Tales DVD as well.

I love finding these on YouTube. I recently heard a Genesis interview right before the And Then There Were Three tour where Tony and Mike were talking to the local station in Rochester, NY. Living close to there, I only wish I was around back then, according to the DJ Tony and Mike were gonna be at the local record store doing autographs before the concert. Probably would have fainted.

A few months ago BBC Radio 2 had a three-part series on progressive rock, with each 60-minute episode focussing on a different instrument, and some interesting choices of music played too. I can't remember the title.

ABC Radio here in Australia have done some radio documentaries on prog over the years -truly ironic since the schedules of the various ABC networks are otherwise devoid of it:

The podcasts for the above disappeared long ago from the ABC site but most of the above pages do still have summaries and "transcripts" (if you are keen).

EDIT: I just saw that each "transcript" is just a list of the musical selections, they don't provide any commentary or interview content... But the Steven Wilson show does have an MP3 of the "full interview" with SW.
