Genesis - The Lamb...
Pink Floyd - The Wall (disc one is phenomenal, disc two -- meh, apart from "Hey You" and "Comfortably Numb")
Dream Theater - SFAM (OK, not really a double album, but it would have been if vinyl was still the medium of choice)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists...(been checking out the post-rock genre lately, and this album is a brilliant marriage of "creepy" and "beautiful")

I now realize I don't really have very many double albums that aren't live.

The usual suspects:

The lamb lies down on Broadway - Genesis
The wall - Pink Floyd
Tales from topographic oceans - Yes

I have not heard Kayaks Nostradamus yet.

Not prog......The Pentateuch of the Cosmogony.............reasonably good music, but there ain't a better sleeve or booklet anywhere in this world than on this.

Works vol 1 - ELP

The Wall - Pink Floyd

This may sound dumb (in fact many of you will agree), but i still visualise an album as being on vinyl.

there are indeed not many double albums, if only studio counts. most live albums are doubles though. I'll name some hardly anyone named before:
Amon Düül 2 - Tanz der Lemminge. fits on only one CD, but was originally released as a double album (back in the time when there was only vinyl)Klaus Schulze - Cyborg
Klaus Schulze - X
Tangerine Dream - Zeit
Volker Kriegel - Inside: Missing Link
Grobschnitt - Ballermann

Oh, and "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Peter Hammill appeared on one CD, but with almost 78 minutes it is longer than some double albums.

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness
Soft Machine - Third
Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention - Freak Out!
Aphrodite's Child - 666
Can - Tago Mago
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
The Who - Quadrophenia
Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence

I love double albums.

Many single CDs are now as long as old vinyl double albums, so maybe this
question should be time-limited to the pre-cd era.

Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

I REALLY love the 90% of it, wich it is a high percentage compared to other double albums. It's also the most played on my stereo (as a double), and never get tired of Rael's journey.

Tales from Topographic Oceans:

That one goes for the 80%. Some parts are weaker than the rest (bits of The Remembering and The Ancient), even now that I've been listening to it  for almost eleven years. On the other hand, It has a lot of Yes' finest moments, especially Howe and Squire's work. It has also my favourite White's drumming (partially because of the sound, brighter than Relayer or Going for the one).

Soft Machine- THIRD; one of the most genuinely progressive albums ever made imo, with some music within it that hadn't been heard before, and little that's been heard since.

Yes- Tales From Topographic Oceans; apart from the hideously self indulgent 'The Ancient', this album is brilliant, and has my fave Yes song ever- 'The Revealing Science Of God'.

Zappa- 'Uncle Meat'; a terrific distillation of everything Zappa had done that preceded it.

Amon Duul II- 'Yeti'- I love this album; it's one of those albums that you can barely do justice to by giving it a genre.

Genesis- The Lamb...; I love this album beginning to end, and find no weak spots in it at all.

The Who- Tommy; a brilliant album, if perhaps tainted by that awful film...

Definetly the White Album. The Beatles played in dozens of different styles on the album showing that they were one of the most versatile bands of all time. The Who also released some great double albums. With progressive rock I find that double albums often contain too much filler in order for the album to be a double album (The Wall, Tales From, Uncle Meat.)

Posted By: M. B. Zapelini
Date Posted: August 23 2005 at 15:23

A top ten, in no particular order:

YES - "Tales from Topographic Oceans"

GENESIS - "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"

THE WHO - "Quadrophenia", "Tommy"

THE ROLLING STONES - "Exile on Main Street"

THE BEATLES - "The Beatles"

FOCUS - "Focus III"

HUMBLE PIE - "Eat it!" (okay, I am cheating here... One of the 4 sides was recorded live...)

JETHRO TULL - "Living in the Past" (two cheats... This one is an anthology, although most of the tracks were not included at the original albums, and it has one live side, too)

QUEENSFYCHE - "Empire"
