Subject: MASSIVE COLLECTION of PROG

Alright here it is guys.  I finally figured it would be a good time to compile my entire prog collection because it's grown so large it's good to remember what I have, and since submitting prog collections seems to be all the rage right now, I figured I should jump on the bandwagon as well.  What I'm submitting is purely prog as defined by the ultimate purveyor of truth for prog..... PROGARCHIVES!  That's right this is PURE PROG, no classic rock or anything else included because that would be an impossible feat for me to accomplish and this site is all about PROG anyways.  If any of you have any recommendations that my collection has neglected or if anyone wants to nominate me for BIGGEST PROG COLLECTION IN THE UNIVERSE award I would gladly accept that too.  Alright eh viola..........

Nice collection, but I have over 750 CD's and about 150 LP's of prog.  And I know there are guys in here with much more than I have.

I've got more prog than that.

Also an LP of Dougal and the Blue Cat and several
Rolf Harris albums. Beat that.

Damn it was worth the try anyways.  I'm only 21 though so I have many years to become the ultimate prog collector of the universe.  I still will accept any challenges from anyone my age or even a few years older to duel my prog collection against theirs.

Last count I had 426 prog albums. That was months ago, though.

Edit: And if this is an age battle - I'm 19.

Double edit: Damn it! You've got me updating my list now! I'll be up all night!

Well you have more than I had at 21...so by the time your my age you'll probably have twice as many cd's as I do now.  It's a great collection...especially the VDGG boots.

I bought a large portion of my friend's brother's prog collection when he went broke (he burned them all anyways) how do you think I finished off all those discographies   But as to the original source I couldn't tell you sorry.  I paid for it all in a lump sum, although I hear it's quite valuable.

It's worth about $1,000 depending on it's condition...

Unfortunately I am talking about the vinyl

The CD isn't exactly easy to find either, but I doubt it would bring in that kind of money.

I have plenty of Mike Oldfield, look again.  And for ELP, as you can tell by my collection I have a varied collection of prog but NO ELP, and there's a very good reason for that which I don't want to state explicitly in the presence of other proggers, just out of respect.    I actually want to check out Triumvirat and as for renaissance I heard a song of theirs and was turned off by it.

Well I guess that's good news as well.  ***Sighs***  I think i saw the CD on sale recently on a website for 20 euros or so while I was pricing some of my collection.  It may be copied though I'm not sure I have no experience with the store.  I'm pretty sure you can find it online for relatively cheap though.

Biggest collection in the world, you're funny. You made me do a rough
count, just to see where I stand. I apparently have over 3700 prog albums
(that is, albums listed on this site...we all know they are not all
progressive, but it's not my definition).

Although I wish this ridiculus number assured me a place at the side of
the almighty, I know it actually means I'm kind of a loser.

And no, I won't list them.

*double checks* Indeed! Have you checked out Ommadawn (by Mike Oldfield) yet? You might also like TBII, which I thought was better than TBIII at any rate.  That and Hergest Ridge. If you're a JMJarre and Vangelis fan you'll probably like those two!!

Thanks for the feedback!  Yeah it would make logical sense to get TBII before TBIII as well.

sh*t, 3700 albums?!?  That's like over $50,000 dollars!!!!   If you paid on average like 15 bucks an album, but you probably paid more...

I'm old, and my brother (who's even older) and I have been collecting prog
for many a year!

Best recent find: Kyrie Eleison box set... got it at Nearfest!! Great stuff!

And actually, I have gotten a lot of stuff on eBay, which helps keep the
cost down.

hey that pales in comparison to a hefty crack, cocaine, or heroin addiction, or a luxury automobile addiction that will inevitably require replacing with more luxury automobiles in the future.  Also CDs don't disappear once you place them on the turntable or in your cd player and can give you repeated "doses" per unit.  Sound investment I say!

You'd think so, wouldn't you ... I hoped there'd be some musical interlinking or something fancy like that but no dice. If there's any link between TB and TBII, it's gone by the time III comes around so I hardly even consider it as part of the series anymore. But TBII's really nice! Definitely seek that one out.

Fine collections with both of you, Robertplantowns and Trouserpress!

IMO fine pics from Robert's collection: Fripp and Eno - The Equatorial Stars, Hawkind - Love In Space, Hidria Spacefolk EP, King Crimson - USA, Pink Floyd - Lets Make Love in London, Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun

And from Trouser's albumlist: Alamaailman Vasarat (With Tuomari Nurmio) – Kinaporin Kalifaatti, Δnglagεrd – Live at Nearfest, Live at the Freakshow Artrock Festival, Ash Ra Tempel – Ash Ra Tempel, England – Garden Shed, Jade Warrior – Released, Peter & The Wolf [Prog version], Wigwam – Fairyport

We have over 600 vinyls and about double the number of CD's. I posted our collection here:
http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10523&KW=collection - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10523& amp;KW=collection

Mark that I only list ARTISTS and not albums. Unless noted otherwise we have the whole output. And that's only the collection of prog (though that's the major part of our collection. Apart from classical there is not much outside this.)

I do not address this to anyone but I want to say this because it seems to be very popular to list prog collections:

Having a cd-r copy of an album does not mean that you own it!! Anyone who says that they own an album, but in fact only have a cd-r copy, are in my opinion lying!! He/She may have heard the album but does not own it!! It is impossible for me to see this any other way.

Having a huge prog collection, even if it has 500, 1000 or 1500 prog albums, does not impress me even one bit, if the albums are mostly cd-r copies or the so-called computer music as I like to call it.

Like I said, this is not addressed to anyone of you because I do not know who lists cd-r copies and who does not. I just have a strong hunch that some people are actually listing cd-r copies. If you want to list your collection, list the originals, those are the ones you own!

We bought each and every album of our collection. We NEVER copy on principle! Some albums are 2nd-hand acquisitions, because they are out of print, but each one was bought!!!!!

BaldFriede, like I said, I did not address my post specifically to anyone.

I have read your posts enough not to even question that your collection consists of originals.

Yes well we all have to start somewhere!

Couldnt agree more you not only lying your a bastard for stealing money from the artist you claim to love. The occasional mp3 dl to see if you like a band is fine but stealing a whole album is just plain SCUM

- how do you get the time to listen to them all properly?

It depends on how old you are. My album/age ratio is 550/30 = 18. So on average I bought 18 albums each year.

On second thought - we shouldn't include years in which we bought no albums: 550/(30-10)= 28.

Even better: get a per month ratio: 550/((30-10)*12)= 2.3

So on average I bought a little more than 2 CD's each month ... that's quite affordable.

I'll make a poll to see how many albums each of us buys each month ...

You don't have to ... I forgot that I'm probably one of the few persons who have ALL their albums ripped to mp3 and organized in a media player library - so my winamp tells me how many albums I have.

But I think you can make an educated guess ...

Ok, I just counted the artists we have all albums of. 438 according to that list I published here. If we estimate them with 4 albums per artist, which seems sensible to me (some of the artists have a huge output that would be enough for 10, others made only one album), I come up with the number of 1752. I think that's a pretty good estimation.

I prefer CD's ... I'm not one of those people who claim that vinyl sounds better than CD's. I think that it depends more on the amplifier than the recording medium.

That's huge ... but considering that 3 persons bought them over the years, the collection isn't necessarily bigger than mine. Just divide that number by the sum of the years it took the three of you to acquire the albums, and divide the result by 12 ...

Just that you don't get too excited I have read an interview with Mauro Moroni, who is the owner of Italian Mellow Records label, in which he states that he has 24.000 LPs and 12.000 CDs. This was an interview that was done somewhere in the end of the nineties so I'm pretty sure the correct number is now closer to something like 25.000 LPs and 14.000 CDs. Anyone can beat that?

Posted By: MikeEnRegalia

^ I can't ... and I don't intend to. Even if he listens to 4 albums each day, it would take him more than 20 years to listen to the entire collection.

Geezer,

I don't agree with you, I am collecting now for over 30 years and I have a quite big collection (not 24.000s so, I should move out of my flat...)and put a lot of money in it.  It is only 2 years no that I have a  CD burner and I burn a lot. Paris has a very good Music library system with an internet link. So I trace down the records I'am looking for and copy them. These are mainly records which are out of print or hard to find ( I have all regular Zappa records and I bought them either on vynil or Cd, but I couldn't find the official boots until I found a couple of them in the library system) but if I see an interesting new record I copy it too. I bought and buy a lot of records and I don't think,I do any harm to the financial situation of any artist. A part from the 'ownership' issue the moment you buy the tool and the medium to make copies you own the right to make private copies anyway.

Cheers

I buy 3 - 15 cd's every month, it's a question of lust and time.

My cd collections is about 1000 cd's and I have about 300 prog cd's, the rest is mostly metal.

I don't have any vinyl and never had a lp player (that would mean, I must buy all my cd's as a lp, which would be far too difficult and expensive).

To the author: Great Collection! A big part of your's I own too on cd. Maybe I am the no. 1 rival of your award?

There is nothing about legal or moral issues of burning CDs in my original post. I intentionally left my opinions of these issues outside, but maybe they can be read through the lines.

What I said was that a cd-r does not equal to owning an album! There is absolutely nothing to brag about a collection that consists of computer music.

Out of 210 CDs, 85 are prog... BUT I have about 35 in the Fusion category (Jean Luc Ponty, Pat Metheny, Al Dimeola). Does anyone else list their fusion albums separately from Prog ?

First post here, love the community.

I must admit, that when it comes to my age(16), you veteran prog maniacs could get me beat in experience.

But, with over 300 rare hardrock, psych, prog, and krautrock albums from 1967-1979, i'd have to say I have some of you beat. My collection is worth in the 1,000's, I believe.

I prize my collection alot. I mean, yeah, I have my share of Zeps and Deep Purple, but having the rare sessions that turned Opossum into Morpheus, is a sight for sore eyes.
