Just laugh it off! Prog is possibly bigger now than in it's hey-day of the early to mid-seventies. The entire genre was more commercially acceptable in those days, with some songs making it into the top ten music charts. That would be harder to achive today, but the entire genre is so much larger now. There are many different artists in many more countries than in the 70's. And there are so many more bands and artists in the off-shoot sub-genres. I really think there's alot more out there than in the past. It's just less commercially accessable, but it's out there if you search long and hard. The internet and the advent of satellite radio has helped too. I actually think it's better that prog is somewhat underground. The less commercial, the less crap. Satellire radio is great because several stations, Musiclab on XM Radio is one, can turn you on to great prog that you overwise might never knew existed. The only drawback is no DJ, so even though you might hear something you like, there is no announcement of who the artist is!

I can't think of a more important topic to be discussed in a prog forum.

I have an article from the Expose magazine that makes various good points about Prog being dead.
Example: Some bands still overuse Mellotron instead of finding ways of making Mellotron a more powerful instrument or overlooking better keyboards/synths just 'cause Mellotron was used in the 70's

To the negative nancies:

"Prog" is dead to some, because some only enjoy certain kinds of prog. Steve Vai is here on the archives now, some consider him "prog" and some don't, because some people are picky which is perfectly fine. So where is the prog? It's the same way with aging people, or people who only listen to one time period//sub-genre of prog. They want to hear fresh familiarities with the bands they know and love. What 55 year old wants to listen to the Mars Volta? I have no idea. And what 13 year old wants to listen to Harmonium? I have no idea. Prog is dead to those who don't like what's going on now, obviously. And prog isn't what it was in the 60's/70's/80's, or even 90's for that matter, not to say it's better or worse. The only way to get fresh ideas in present day is to experience new things. Don't expect a new favorite band to replace your old favorite band every week, or even every year. Cultures change, so music and attitudes towards music change.

To Zooka_Jesus:

Why let negative people get to you? Dennis's response is correct.
