Cervello's Melos! Love this album by bits. But, I don't own it. Out of the ones I do, it would be Zarathustra.

Oh geez that's a tough one. Any other day of the week and it could be one of the QVL albums, or L'isola di Niente, or Palepoli, or maybe Cherry Five, but going with my gut, I'll pick this bad boy:

if I could have stretched my list of flammable exceptions to saving 4 albums I would have definitely had that first PFM album.. I suppose I could included the time I ran a 78' Firebird into a tree at 85 and it didn't explode ... or kill me as an exception

Mickster, what is your opinion (and Raffs) of Banco's first three....I can't recall....those would seem to be formidable desert island choices.
QVL, Cervello, and Metamorfosi are also considerations.

I think Raff is much more into Darwin and Libero albums... where as the Debut is really the only one of the 3 (or any of their albums) I consistently re-relisten to. To be perfectly honest.. great band as they are.. they would likely be at the bottom for me of the RPI big 6 in terms of pure enjoyment

Really? Can you articulate anything about them that bothers you? I'm always curious about why people don't dig Banco as much as.....say....PFM and Orme I suppose in some ways they are so textbook RPI that maybe they lack certain personality quirks that otherwise endear us to our favorite groups?
(I don't know, I'm half in the bag)

oh no Jim.. it ain't like I'm saying Banco are like Genesis... Dull.. or f**king Camel. Great band.. great albums.. but yeah.. they do lack something each of the other 5 had that set them apart for me.
I'll have to think that over Jim... I'll get back to you. Perhaps after a few strong ones later this evening to loosen up the mud in my brain!

iced tea here.. but not for long hahah
Never did review any of them.. or any IIRC of the PFM, Orme, or Banco albums. Reviewing to me never came easy so I impulsively cherry picked and went for albums I wanted to give shouts out to... those gems that make RPI so great.. and so much more than just the big 6.

much like the English fuddie duddies ..there is the obvious big 3.. Yes, K.C, ELP but to avoid butt hurt feelings.. we make it the big 6 and toss in that pop group... Ian Anderson's ego.. and Floyd
same in RPI... there is the big 3 on a pedestal all their own.. but just below them.. are artists that belong in the same discussion...
Area, Osanna, and Battiato fill out the big 6 of essential RPI artists.. and in its way... just like the English Big 6.. they are the ones that defined it... and those you have to know if you want to know anything about it.

Definitely Storia Di Un Minuto. That album is just too good... literally. Even positive reviews never quite fully cover how good it is. There are a handful of albums I like more, but none I consider to be quite as ubiquitously perfect. Don't like my favorite album? I can live with that, even understand it. Don't like Storia Di Un Minuto? Heathen! Get your deaf f**king ass out of my house (I have hearing loss, I get to use the disability as an insult, it's my personal equivalent of the N word ). It's the one album we should all be capable of properly agreeing on as being good.

A little fast and loose with the rules there, Mr Progman! Nice collection though - especially if you take out Event '76, use it as a frisbee, and replace with e.g. the 1978 album.

Nahh don't answer that. I hear they use it as part of an interrogation program in Uzbekistan.

As for the actual question, any of my likely choices were already picked, in reality it's probably between Ys and one of the first four Area studio albums (though don't ask which one!).
If I had to choose something that wasn't already mentioned, maybe Il Paese dei Balocchi, I'm pretty fond of that one.

Ahh the beautiful valium tour de force I mean that as a compliment btw. There's just something very heady and valium-like to that album.

I know what you mean about that mysterious vibe.
Mind you when it comes to the lyrics pretty much all RPI is mysterious to me. For all I know Franco Battiato could be singing about blue and purple space rabbits doing battle over a cosmic carrot.

Far too difficult - but I still like to ask:
A lot of my actual italian favorites falls outside the so-called RPI-genre (Dedalus, Picchio Dal Pozzo and Aktualas debuts, Sensational Fix - Portable Madness, Pierrot Lunaire - Gudrun, Perigeo - Genealogia... to name some of them) so is any kind of italian favorite progalbum ok or just RPI?
(To my ears Area falls outside as well, but I see they they've been moved to RPI from jazz fusion)

Well it's not my thread, but if Area is RPI then that means anything Italian can on some point of view be RPI, 'cos they got as far out as anyone did...or if they didn't, please tell me what was further out so I can hear it! Plus the thread is more interesting if it's more inclusive, I reckon.
Dedalus, Aktuala and Picchio dal Pozzo are certainly the bees knees as far as I'm concerned. The other albums I haven't heard yet
