Thought I'd get this years thread rolling.

Big news to start the year, Bottas is replacing Rosberg at Mercedes for this year with Massa coming out of a very short retirement at Williams for one last season and Pascal Werhlein moving to Sauber. Manor are unfortunately in administration, there's an offer on the table for them but it's got to be sorted very soon or the teams done.

The Daytona 24 Hours should be up soon, the first season with all LMP2's and there the newer more powerful cars this year.

At least Bottas is not stuck at Williams anymore, but I bet he's going to get destroyed by Hamilton.

I don't know about destroyed, but Verstappen, Alonso and Ricciardo are the only drivers I'd not automatically expect to loose when alongside Hamilton.

It's early days yet.  Bottas beat Massa and he's no slouch.   I agree,  Hamilton will walk over Bottas but i believe he will have some great results to prove his talent!...  He's only signed a 1 year contract.

Can't complain about Bottas getting that seat.

Looking forward to catching some of the 24 hours of Daytona

With the NFL season completely unraveled, I just want to get back to racing again.  Some fairly big stuff happening in the off season, too, across the globe.

-Obviously, the Nico Rosberg retirement announcement came as a shock to everyone, especially just having won the title.  Bottas getting the seat is cool.  However, I can't imagine he does much against Hamilton and wouldn't be surprised if his own team were the biggest road block.  It just seems too temporary.

-Another shocking retirement came out of Monster Energy Cup Series (formerly Sprint Cup) ranks when Carl Edwards announced he was done with full time racing, effective immediately.  Coming so close to finally getting that illusive title last year, I didn't see this one coming at all.  Being at JGR, he has the best shot of anyone to get it this year.  He stated his reasoning mainly being that he wants to do other things, but I don't know.  Seems too sudden.  2016 Xfinity champion Daniel Suarez will take over the 19 in the Cup series full time.

So it's been confirmed today, Manor have officially closed their doors and shut down, no buyer was found in time for them to get going this year.

On the upside, Daytona 24 this weekend.

YES!

And that controversial move that got them the lead late, to me, was just hard racing where both cars forced the issue and Taylor came out on top.  A very quick move that I'm sure surprised Albuquerque, but he ended up coming down on the 10.  Honestly, though, IMSA had been letting a lot of aggressive moves go the entire race, so they were pretty consistent throughout.

That is pretty sweet. I didn't realize he was on that team as the ending laps were happening. Pretty fun end of the race too. Thumbs Up

I was rooting for the WTR team, along with the Mazda Multimatic-Riley the best looking of the new prototypes, disappointing just how huge the Cadillac advantage was, the only other car that could live with the three Caddies in the dry was the Rebellion racing WEC car, and that dropped out in the second hour.

The 24 hours of Daytona is my ringing in to the new racing season :D

Wow, another close ass finish. Congrats to the old man Jeff Gordon, Angelelli and Taylor & Taylor on the win!

Sad about Nico, but hey...guess tough to resist going out on top. Excited to see what Bottas can do.

Yes, good see these enduros go down to the wire! I saw a six hour race at Watkins Glen in the seventies where I actually fell asleep almost through the entire race and was told that I didn't miss a thing!

IMSA will eventually dial out the Caddie advantage in time.

It's hard to tell how much of an advantage they had though, very strong rumours going around that Nissan and Mazda had detuned their engines for the weekend due to reliability fears.

The IndyCar season kicked off with a Bourdais/Dale Coyne upset in St. Pete.

In Cup today, Truex snatched the win from Keselowski in the last couple of laps while Kyle Busch and Joey Logano got into each other on track and then back into each other on pit road, courtesy of a slug from Kyle.  Oh boy...

Pretty impressive run from Bourdais yesterday, started dead last and ended up in victory lane! It seems Honda and Chevy are pretty evenly matched so far this year.

Been watching the WRC again this year, for the first time in a long time it's actually worth while (and free streaming on the Red Bull TV site) with some pretty beastly cars and 3 winners in the first 3 rallies from 3 different manufactures.

F1 should be good this year, Ferrari look like a genuine threat to Mercedes this time.

I really want to like Formula E but the cars are too slow and I'll be glad when they finally ditch car swapping next season.

I really wanted to like the new era for IMSA but the Cadillac's have such a huge advantage it's killing the racing.

Formula E's all street course schedule is awful, they're too quiet and yes, the car swapping is dumb.  The series has potential, but it's not what I like about racing.

I liked the high level of competition between the drivers and the fact that they are considered "too slow" doesn't bother me as some of the best racing I've seen has been in junior formulas like North American Formula Atlantic. "Too quiet" doesn't bother me either. The turbo Audi LMP diesels fixed that problem for me. Wink

If they went to actual road courses, I'd pay attention more.  Most of their tracks are too narrow to harbor any decent racing.

F1 this weekend in Melbourne and the Supercars are there as support.  Honestly, I'm more excited for the Supercars. LOL

I have to agree with you about the temp street tracks used by FE. They should be part of the F1 weekend or at least run on the same tracks as F1 at other times. Yeah, Australia this weekend. Let's see who did their homework.

FE cars would be rediculously slow on pemanent race tracks, they look terrible around Donington for instance, it's why they use short street circuits. The problem with them being so slow is that they reach v-max very early on the straights so when 2 cars are moving at the exact same speed for the majority of the straights length it makes for rather bad racing IMO. It is changing though, the cars are steadily getting faster and the car swapping will be gone next year when the new battery comes in.

Practice times from Australia, a bit disappointed that Ferrari isn't closer.

No, but I'm disappointed all the same. F1 has been a bore lately and I was hoping the new specs would shake up the competition, at least in the short run until the cars are better sorted. I'm very tired of F1's "follow the leader" status quo, unless in rains. That's why I'm impressed with the level of competition in FE. There is actually overtaking and out breaking. Let's see if F1's new cars follow suite.

Wow! Ferrari!

I will resist the temptation to say Ferrari may be a challenge to Merc this year because I remember when I, and others, said that after Malaysia 2015 and how it turned outLOL Will just wait and see if Merc will finally face competition or was this just one race.

Otherwise pretty standard results. Congrats to Esteban Ocon for scoring points in his first with F.I.

First win for Ferrari since September of '15 and also the first time I was happy to see Vettel win a GP! I still prefer Kimi, though. LOL

Also, Kyle Larson swept the NASCAR weekend at Auto Club in Fontana.  Some good, young drivers finally starting to come into Cup and perform well against the the veterans.  The future is here!

It was a great strategy from Ferrari (and arguably a mistake from Hamilton from insisting to come in early). I hope it wasn't just good luck and they've actually improved from past few years. The car seems slightly behind from Mercedes but not too much.

Massive pileup in race 3 of the Supercars season last night.  It took so long to cleanup that by the time they resumed under a safety car, race control declared that the race would end with full points awarded (only 3 laps were completed).  Thankfully, common sense came into play and it was later declared that NO points would be awarded.  Why not just resume the race this morning and make today a double header with race 4 or reschedule at a later date?  Needless to say, there was an uproar on the paddock (and on social media LOL).

Watch from about 7:00 on.  Talk about a gut punch for the #3 Corvette. Confused

Hinch wins in Long Beach!  Weird race, overall, with all four Andretti cars dropping out due to mechanical issues, despite both Rossi and RHR having a shot to win it towards the end.  And Bourdais leads points in the 18 Dale Coyne car with a 2nd place finish today.

And occurrences like this has always been the cruelty of racing. Just like a puncture on the last lap after some driver has led an entire race. Sh*t, unfortunately, happens.

Well holy sh*t! Alonso has just announced he'll be missing the Monaco GP to take part in the Indy 500 in an Andretti run McLaren entry, that will be smoething to see.

No brainer. The Andretti ride will actually be competitive for him, and he will definitely add a lot more interest to the race.

I'm so excited to see Alonso run Indy, partly because it'll be fun to see him run on an oval in a pack, and partly because it's great exposure for IndyCar, and they need everything they can get.  Hopefully, this starts a trend, though with those two races being on the same day, it's still doubtful.  I guess this is the silver lining to come from McLaren's struggles. LOL

F1 still sounds better on paper right now. Still waiting for some wheel to wheel racing to the checkered flag. Perhaps very soon. I'm hoping.

The year Ferrari (or anyone) can finally compete with Merc?
This could be one helluva year if it's gunna be a battle like this between Lewis and Seb

Yes, great win for Hinch.

Crazy news about Alonso but hey, I'd do anything to get out of that F1 car as well!

Leading the entire race only to get a puncture at the end. Where have I heard that before? Anyhow, nice win for Newgarden.

That was a great drive on Newgarden's part!  Wrestled that spot away from Dixon late and that ended up being the race-winning move.  I'd feel bad for Power, but I just don't. LOL

Wow Bottas! Guess he's not being totally dominated, yet!
Fairly typical results, cool to see Ocon with 4 straight point finishes, seems FI will be quite solid this year.

Alonso with the Did Not Start, engine problem. Jesus, you think it can't really be more pathetic and there it is. McLaren WTF has happened to you, and this is downright painful for Alonso.

^It's painful for the entirety of McLaren, past and present.  The second most distinguished constructor in F1 history, and they've reduced themselves to this.  It's really sad.  Just hope Jenson gets to actually start Monaco.

And Kyle Busch's frustrating 2017 continues... Ouch

Great drive from Bottas. I knew he had it in him. Talented, cool and very very hungry. This win was no fluke and he'll have more.

So, Alonso is cleared to compete in the Indy 500 with his passing of the rookie test, which was viewed by 2 million people supposedly.  Also, he literally killed two birds with one orange stone, too. LOL

They're practicing at Indy, and Alonso is midpack, about where I expected him.  Today, though, he ran something like 117 laps and a lot of it with his Andretti teammates, learning how to work the draft and work in a pack.  The 500 can't get here fast enough.

Well, not much else to look forward to for Alonso.

Another win for Lewis, seems clear he and Vettel will be duking it out for this title.
Some Finnish DNF's allowed Ricciardo onto the podium, Perez into 4th and Esteban Ocon into 5th placeClap Continuing his pretty good F1 start.

Kyle Busch finally notched an All Star win last night in his twelfth try in what was an overall boring event.  Pretty par for the course in the past few years with the All Star race, really.  Nobody can pass for the lead. Angry

On the IndyCar side, they held pole day qualifying for the Fast Nine and then also for the rest to determine 10th-33rd, although the lineup only shows 32.  James Davison will start 33rd in place of the injured Sebastien Bourdais, who crashed yesterday and suffered multiple fractures in his pelvis and also a broken hip.

Spectacular run from Alonso there to make the second row, really looking forward to seeing the race.

Good luck to Bourdais, those were some pretty serious injuries. He's out for the year I just hope it doesn't end his career.

Congrats to Vettel on winning at Monaco, only his 2nd victory there. Feels almost wrong lol

Alonso is out of Indy unfortunately, Honda engine failure......just ouch

Scott Dixon is OK after a vicious accident, holy sh*t...missed the safer barriers, the fence pretty much everything. Down to just the integrity of the car, thank goodness it held up as always. And after the armed robbery...Scott has had quite a poor weekend despite his pole!

Holy crap, Takuma Sato!!!! For someone who may not have been much of an oval racer just won the biggest there isClap

Holds off Helio for the win, wow. Top 5 rounded by rookie Ed Jones, Max Chilton and Tony Kanaan.

JPM, Rossi, Marco, Munoz and Gabby Chavez finish off the top 10.
This all thrusts Helio into top spot just ahead of Dixon, Pagenaud and Sato in a 3 way tie. Gunna be quite a year

Alonso has a typical end to his race with a Honda engine going pop, at least this time he was running 7th and in contention for the win.

Excellent job by Sato, makes up for 2012.

Again, the Indy 500 ended up being SO good!  Gutted for Alonso, as he was having a stellar day and was setting up for a possible battle for the win, but his luck with Honda continued.  At least a Honda engine won, I guess.  And speaking of which, TAKUMA SATO!  Congrats, guy!  Amazing battle with Helio at the end and finally makes  up for 2012!

^This! Amazing that Castoneves  looked like he was geared up for another patented Penske win after riding under Dixon's flying car, losing a piece of rear wing and being in second place with three laps to go. Go Sato!

Jeez, Graham Rahal swept the Duel in Detroit this weekend.  Didn't see that coming.

Jimmie Johnson won his 83rd Cup race today and ties Cale Yarborough on the all time win list at 6th.
