Hello all,
My name is Kent and I am in my late 50's. Growing up in Utah most of the stuff I listened to was the typical top 40 billboard stuff on the radio. At some point, I discovered an AOR radio station and was introduced to David Bowie, Pink Floyd and others. From that point on I was always looking for music that was out of the mainstream for my area.

Although all these are not progressive, some of the bands that had the most influence on me are as follows (in no particular order):

The Beatles
The Guess Who (until Domenic Troiano joined)
Steppenwolf
ELP (Until Love Beach)
Yes, although I never bought any albums
Alice Cooper (I loved the theatrics)
KISS (Same reason as Alice Cooper, but I stopped listening to them after Love Gun)
Tangerine Dream

In the late 70's and through the 80's I became obsessed with Todd Rundgren / Utopia and bought his/their complete catalog up through Arena. I also became a big fan of Rush during this time but lost interest after Hold Your Fire.

The 90's through the present, I've really spent most of my listening time listing to my current collection of music.

A few months ago I found the magazine "Prog" at a bookstore and it rekindled my interest in this type of music.

I bought Dream Theater's The Astonishing, but I can't seem to enjoy it. I've also been listening to a lot of Rick Wakeman lately and have found I really like his music.

One thing I have learned while lurking here is how much I don't know about prog music. I was amazed at all the different sub-genres!

I'm hoping to learn from all the members here and discover some new music!

Sorry for the ramble.

Kent

welcome to the site Kent.... yeah.. that is something we ALL have come to learn.

There is so much here TO learn. And while grounded in the classics... if interested to explore.. there really is a wealth of great current, non-retro sounding, prog/progressive music being made in the last few years.  Great time to be a fan, or explorer, of this music.  Enjoy the site! Beer

Hey GrumpyOldMan, welcome to the site.

Your background sounds familiar, I'm about the same age and grew up in western Montana learning lots of North Dakotan jokes and discovering the world of prog and other music through Wolfman Jack's Midnight Special, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, Night Flight and KEIN radio (there wasn't a hell of a lot else to do under the Big Sky).  The Beach Boys and Beatles were a gateway drug to Yes, Bowie, Steppenwolf, Pink Floyd and other awkward and awesome discoveries.

Welcome to the site, hope you find the time here well-spent like many of the rest of us have.

Thanks. I've been spending time reading about the different sub-genres and re-evaluating my CD collection (all my vinyl is is storage out of state). I would never have thought of Rush as prog until I visited this site.

Hey Clem. We just moved to ND by was of Texas a couple of years ago. Like I mentioned, I grew up in Utah. I had family on my mother's side in Western Montana, Stevensville to be exact. I definitely remember watching Don Krishner's Rock Concert and the Midnight Special.

Welcome aboard Kent!

Similar age myself but on the east coast rat race world.  Had many of the band likes as you back then (was a big Alice Cooper fan in the day).  Yes, Pink Floyd, Kansas, and ELP were my entry into Prog then.  Also totally loved Rundgren's album "Utopia", not the band Utopia which I also like but was nuts over his album Utopia.

Yes there are some well learned Prog heads in here (I am not one of them) and when I first visited this site I could not believe all the genres, bands, etc....amazing.  Lots to explore and enjoy.  I have come to love the genre RPI (Italian prog) which I first heard for the first time around 2012 not long after I joined the site.

PS-I understand about Dream Theatre, I only have one album and that is enough.... :)

Hi AEProgman!

I never really liked Kansas back in the day. Another band I wouldn't have thought of as prog. I may have to give them a listen again.
