It's a disgrace, completely tragic...a bunch of young kids going to a teeny-bopper concert...possibly could have been the first concert for many of them, how exciting it must have been for them.

It's hard to know how we can possibly stop the perpetrator(s) if those responsible clearly don't give a flying f*ck about human life, free expression, tolerance, respect or familial love. The target being a music concert attended predominantly by teenage fans means it was chosen solely for the purpose of generating maximum outrage. My condolences go out to the victims and their loved ones.

You absolutely despair at the mindset of people who could commit such an appalling act. This was deliberately targeted at an audience of young people and their parents. Staggering, really, and there must now be a movement to bear down properly on this type of lunatic. Moderate Muslims must play their part, because the ideology of the nut jobs is well known in the communities.
RIP. Such a tragic day.

As a parent and grand-parent who has attended concerts with my kids and grand kids over the years and witnessed the sheer joy and wonder in their eyes at the spectacle (regardless of whether it was B*Witched or Rush!) i can only offer my deepest heartfelt condolences to those caught up in this senseless act of evil.. But its equally important to remember and applaud the acts of kindness and humanity offered up by the people of Manchester in support of the victims and emergency services, regardless of their religion, creed, class etc.

My understanding is that dogs would be the best way to detect explosives in such circumstances; they can smell it on a person immediately and from a good distance.

The whole point of terrorism is fear mongering. The healthiest thing we can do is resist the urge to despair and keep going. Stare this madness in the face and push through.

^ But I agree, and I don't fear terrorism. We must stand up to it; it's better to get a bloody nose (or worse) than to knuckle under.

I agree that we must stand up to it or they win but I do fear terrorism. It has the capacity to reduce to rubble pretty much everything and everyone I value and believe worth living for.

It is so tragic. The loss of life is tragic but so is the fact that a young man can become radicalised to the point where killing children is acceptable to them. It bothers me that someone's empathy can be eroded by brainwashing, but then it's not a new phenomenon. WE saw it in Nazi Germany, we saw it in relatively recent times in the Balkans. The human mind, regardless of age is a very weak and malleable thing.
As for 'moderate Muslims' they do play their part. The Muslim council of Britain always condemns acts of violence, as does the Quilliam foundation, who actively campaigns to promote strategies to counter radicalisation of the young. There are numerous Muslim charities that work along side other faith based charities doing community work and promoting diversity etc etc...it simply doesn't get reported, because division and hatred is far more exciting and sexy from a news POV.
However - TRIGGER WARNING - I don't believe there is such a thing as 'moderate Islam' Just because someone renounces violence and rejects terrorism, it doesn't make them moderate if they also believe that gay people are evil and should be killed as is the law in the majority of Muslim countries. Moderate Islam is essentially a meaningless western tag applied to Muslims who don't carry out or support terrorism. They may however be very extreme by western standards in other ways.

Well, the dickhead who blew himself up 'for whatever reason', will be met with nothing but blackness, not the 72 (or whatever) virgins he hoped for. Proves just how dangerously deluded members of this mob are. The post-suffering of such an act is unfathomable. This sort of sh*t going on in this day and age really boils my piss. I could barely talk about this yesterday. The idea of destroying, and now permanently disrupting, the very act of young people living joyously as only one could when they are children or young adults is most sickening. And the thought of parents waiting outside of the arena to take their children home after enjoying the concert, only to be greeted with this brutal act of cowardice, is mind numbing. I feel even worse today about this tragedy, if that's even possible. It's just so sad.

R.I.P. for all who are victims of these atrocities.
As for your questions. Intellectuals warned at the time when the UK and US were invading Iraq that this would come to roost. One of the given truths of the universe is that the cycle of cause and effect pretty much rings true time and time again and is quite apparent when looking at the bigger picture. Once you realize how Western nations interfere, invade, extract resources, force countries into endless debt and it is very understandable why these things occur since such a deed is an act of complete loss of power. While it may seem that innocent kids attending a concert have done nothing to deserve such things, it should be remembered that neither have the scores of innocent citizens who have perished under the US drone programs and hegemonic invasions carried out by other allies as well. I agree with those who have warned us that this will only get worse as long as we are carrying out these same clandestine programs of kill programs over the globe.

I get the gist of what you're saying i.e. belief systems where too much value is placed upon a delusional 'afterlife' undermines the sanctity of human life, but militant activism is the antithesis of faith

Not sure what you mean. Prayer for me denotes a belief in transcendental agents that the believer petitions to change an unpalatable reality that transgresses holy scripture . Strapping explosives to your person and detonating same in a crowded arena in the heart of the perceived 'infidel' is the polar opposite of 'faith'

Praying also denotes a communal or personal activity where people who believe in said transcendental agents offer their lives in exchange (though they wouldn't agree it's so transactional) for untold bliss that can take many forms depending on the creed. The belief is always, 100% of the time irrational.

I don't understand this comment.......For many, many people in the world, in history, some type of prayer is at times the only self comfort a person can achieve...and give.
As a person who believes, I from across the pond feel the only thing I can do to "help" is pray for those families who lost their young children, hope that one day they are able to smile again. As a parent this is beyond anything I could imagine happening to me.
Don't get me wrong either, I also pray that these worthless pcs of sh*t who commit these crimes spend the rest of eternity in hell suffering acts of punishment that we cannot imagine.

Correct. It's self-comfort. It doesn't make any problem go away or any person actually feel better but the one doing the praying. Unless of course the receiver shares the same faith, but that can't be assumed.

You don't know that the affected parents/grandparents, don't feel some comfort and some level of feeling better by knowing that people thousands of miles away are praying for them, and if you prefer...are thinking strongly of these families.
Of course it does not make the problem go away, the problem has already happened, so what can anybody do but pray/think about these families and hope one day they will smile again.
If we don't stand together with these families, pray together or think strongly good thoughts to each other....The other options is we don't stand together, which means they win!!
I will pray for them......

I am sure the tickets will be refunded even without people asking, considering the reason why. If it were me I would offer that money, since I already spent it, to a fund to help those poor families. Ticket brokers/agents should do something like that, at least offer that to those still holding tickets.

I must say I'm growing weary of all the vapid platitudes of politicians over attacks like this. They actually reserve no right to grieve and they certainly reserve no right to talk tough, declaring "enough is enough" as we have heard from Theresa May over the weekend, and in response to yet another attack on Saturday night in London.
If this awful woman is serious about tackling extremism a good starting point would be to stop selling weapons to Saudi and Qatar; two of the world largest hotbeds of Wahabist terrorism, and oddly enough, two of the west greatest buddies in a seriously screwed up part of the world.
Just so folk know, prayer, nice thoughts, ribbons, wristbands and dialogue are actually not going to make this problem go away. Neither is a street war against Islam. There has to be a pragmatic cutting off of the snakes head.

In every case the justification of violence is a small set of books. Books created by the behest of a 6th century war-lord are not going to be basis for a peaceful 21st century are they? Open up the qu'ran at virtually any page and you will find verses extorting his followers to kill those who do not 'Believe'. Clearly the Qu'ran is no more use in being a guide to live by than the bible or Mein Kampf. When the religious knobs realise that their feeble faith-based world-views belong back in the dark ages - perhaps then mankind can get on with enjoying life together!

You are asking one of the most impossible things ever asked for. It will never happen. Maybe in 300 years there will only be 1 billion religious people in the world but probably the entire planet's population will be one billion anyway after global warming kills us

When it comes to what one believes, from a religious perspective, good bad or indifferent, there will be no changes, not until the earth is done.
These are books, teachings, ideology that will never go away. And please don't tell me that we need to "teach" the young people differently. Once you try to tell someone what they and their lineage believe is wrong, well that will never work.
You can pray to every God you know to change it......will never happen.
I agree that more drastic measures need to happen. Cutting off all forms of income, freezing all accounts, not selling them any trucks, equipment, gear, food, clothes, guns, ammo. Prosecuting anyone connected with these groups, scare everyone away.
Or simply make it a military mission to go in and continually raid, take out, infiltrate these groups where ever they are.....
But I am sure there will be some group of people or country that will say this is mean, we should not or cannot act this way.

Either we decide we don't have to worry too much because chances are low that those attacks ever affect us, and we have all this military power stuff,...
...or, since it's mostly related to Saudis & co – vs – Iran & co – vs – Zionists & co, and we know some countries are still keen on selling non defensive weapons, let's not talk too much about religion.
Many extremists can be found on social networks (not even necessary to go on Darknet) and everyone can challenge their views... But they also can challenge ours.
Studying a religious issue like the one about Houthis (close to Iran) who's "subversive" influence is feared by jet-setting "religious" governments is revealing to anyone with a sense of fairness with a minimum of curiosity on enemy's standpoint.
First there are mutually accusing fingers and adamant idealists. Before war there's a chance to appease tensions. After war has started, slightly more difficult...
If religious people believe in a loving god, they'll commit to a system that works so fine that everyone wants to be part of it. If this system is religious, it won't need no weapon to convert anyone.
If (Saudi / Israeli )jet-setters are the blessed ones, let them keep going. If their happiness could be made of way less money, they'll want to live a simplier life so nobody will blame their "arrogance" and call it all an unfair system.
Healing will be slow, but let's remember how everyone recovered from WWI / WWII and take advantage of internet.

The reactions are tedious every time. "Pray for Manchester" "Something needs to be done"
Well, what needs to be done? Should we be constantly on our guard because we can't bring ourselves to exclude any group from our societies? I'm sorry, but I see zero benefit to continuing to let Muslims in at all. You're not killing anyone by simply restricting immigration. Refuse to do so, and this sort of horrific incident will become increasingly commonplace.
We also need to end these insane wars though. The Muslim world certainly cannot reform itself with this constant meddling going on.
