| A very good album, yet not essential, at least for me. And I don't thing Adrian Belew was considered the new Hendrix. A good guitarist yes, but not even among the top 50. |

I think Adrian Belew is a really original and innovative songwriter, and awesome guitarist with a unique style - one of the few that can communicate humour through instrumental playing (I put Didier Malherbe, Gong's reeds player, in this category too, as well as, of course, Zappa). I actually put Belew in my top 50 guitarists list, and on some of the Belew-era Crimson albums he outshines Fripp. Saying all that, his first album is good, but not his masterpiece. Op Zop Too Wah is probably my favourite Belew album. My favourite on Lone Rhino is the closing piece, Final Rhino - beautiful song.

your answer.. goddamn right it does hold up. Fell in love with it back then.. and still today would consider it in my top 20 favorite albums. Not a weak moment on it... amazing stuff. I heard “Big Electric Cat” on college radio when this came out, it was one of the coolest songs I’d ever heard. I always liked this album, but rather as a whole, the variety, the creativity, the guitar sounds, the humour. Every song is only part of a bigger whole. Every song has something special I like it for, but I wouldn't take out this album just because one of them would be so good that I'd want to listen to it on its own. I could vote for most of them or none. |
