Many modern US bands are fronted by great female singers. Besides Bent Knee, I would recommend http://https://phideaux.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - Phideaux  (comprising no less than four talented ladies!), http://https://infinien.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - iNFiNiEN , http://https://innerearbrigade.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - Inner Ear Brigade , the sadly disbanded http://https://moetar.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - MoeTar , http://https://altrockproductions.bandcamp.com/album/ancesters-tale" rel="nofollow - Ut Gret .  and http://https://thegco.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - Galactic Cowboy Orchestra . http://https://halfpastfour.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - Half Past Four from Toronto (Canada) are also excellent. I have seen most of them live, and they are all highly recommended!

Off the top of my head, and with prog in mind:

Renaissance
Curved Air
Magenta
Mostly Autumn
The Reasoning
Panic Room
Karnataka
Touchstone
Iona
Anathema
Iamthemorning....

.... along with a whole raft of solo artists, obviously. Sometimes vocal duties are shared with males.

Loads more, no doubt...but can't promise you'll think they'll fit your tastes and consider them great, though.

There are also great bands out there that have female lead singers that share the duties with male lead singers.  For instance, bands that are listed on this site like Black Mountain, Anathema, Archive, Dead Can Dance, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

There are some great female soloists that most people here know that are also listed on this site like Kate Bush, Bjork, Tori Amos.

Just naming some obvious ones off the top of my head.

What style are you looking for?

Oh one more that is a personal favorite that you won't find on the archives and that is a band called "Eye to Eye".  They only released a few albums in the early 80s, but they were a very awesome band with a Steely Dan style jazz-rock.  Lead singer is Deborah Berg and she co-founded the band with pianist Julian Marshall.

The three Fairport Convention progressive British folk albums What We Did On Our Holidays, Unhalfbricking and Liege & Lief with the ethereal Sandy Denny singing (their self-titled debut album is also very good but it is more a straightforward emulation of American folk rock with nods to Dylan and Joni Mitchell).

Haunting vocals.

I guess most of the ones I can think of have already been mentioned, but in case you haven't heard them, Renaissance is the top of the iceberg in prog world. And another favourite around here, though I barely know her, is Kate Bush. A current one that I have been liking is Iamthemorning. And of course, there's a whole lot of bands from the female fronted metal bands, mostly symphonic, or folk metal, or gothic, etc. The ones I know most are Nightwish, Epica, After Forever, Within Temptation and Tristania... and though I don't know them so well, The Gathering are among the favourite ones among the fans of such music (of course, some of those bands share vocal duties with growling).

Magenta are probably my favourites and they are still very active and about to release a live double album featuring their 2 best albums Seven and We Are Legend titled 'We Are Seven'.
Also don't forgot Steelye Span and the wonderful Maddy Prior. I would also mention Mike Oldfield's albums between 1980 and 1984 (best is Crisis followed by Discovery) which featured Maggie Reilly quite strongly.

^verslibre - I'd recommend "Now We Are Six" (produced by Tull's Ian Anderson) and "Commoner's Crown" as starting points.

Keep in mind that their roots are in British folk rock, often bringing old songs (words) to life with their own music.

It's interesting how similar the voices are of Renaissance's Annie Haslam and Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior. The phrasings are slightly different, but the voice tone, style, and ranges are nearly identical.

They are both also able to pull off a 'soaring' style of singing, that is very beautiful.

I was listening to "Sheep-Crook and the Black Dog" this morning, and it again caught my attention.

I was listening to "Sheep-Crook and the Black Dog" this morning, and it again caught my attention.

I would put it this way.  IF Annie sang Sheep-Crook and the Black Dog, she would try to get close to that kind of phrasing.  That is, if I plotted all the styles Annie can sing as a Venn diagram, the Steeleye Span style would be a subset within it.  Then you have something like Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars which is completely different.

And then, you listen to the title track of Camera Camera and that's like Kate Bush, pretty much.  Very head voice-y tone up in the fifth octave throughout (Annie normally likes to build a solid chest base in the fourth octave to then launch up into a soaring fifth/sixth octave note).

Tone wise too, Annie's voice is a bit lower and heavier too, richer too;  Maddy has a lighter and more high pitched voice.  She uses her impeccable control to mask it a lot of times (except in a song like Touching Once where she's actually using all that vocal weight).

Of all the other folk rock/prog contemporaries of Annie, I thought Jacqui McShee of Pentangle was the one who sounded most like Annie (or rather, Annie sounded like her).  Again, Annie's well trained voice combined with her not being overly beholden to one niche meant she covered a very wide spectrum unlike these folk specialists who of course sounded fabulous in their niche.

I like that group. Reliably easy listening jazzy stuff rendered by a voice that's easy on the ears with a face that's easy on the eyes. When the poor souls did try to experiment (and very well at that) on Filth and Dreams, the album tanked and they went right back to the time tested formula.

COS, a terrific Belgian band, excellent female vocals. Postaeolian Train Robbery and Viva Boma are both very good records.

Et Cetera. Great band from Canada.

Mellow Candle. They are Irish, with two female singers, Swaddling Songs being their best effort.

Delivery, although not really a great band with only one record, but a very good vocalist with beautiful voice.
