2 bands with 2 very similar names.
Who do you like the most ?
For you, for who these are hard to tell apart, to make your choice,
there is a simple rhyme, to help you do so.

These bands are hard to tell apart,
But there's a rhyme to learn by heart,
Steeleye Span jazz rock do play,
While Steely Dan sing folk all day.

Simple. Big smile

The wonderful Steeleye Span.
In your rhyme you have them reversed!

Maybe I'm dead wrong. I do like Steeleye Span myself as long as they stick to 70's folk don't try to rock. Maddy Prior's voice is Sandy Denny-level wonderful but after Below The Salt I don't enjoy their albums much. But I think most folk is best without electric guitars and rock drums

As Steeleye has been one of my favorite bands for decades, you can guess where my vote goes.

The Dan......but I am a fan of Steeleye also. I have most of their 70's lp's on original vinyl.

I voted both.   I love me some Dan but if you're in the mood for some kickin' old school Elf Rock, Steeleye is hard to beat.

Hi,

I don't think I have ever EVER met a single person that listened to a STEELEYE SPAN album on its own and in its entirety ... or ... can name the lead singer!

Oh well ... so much for progressive and experimental and doing something totally different and off the wall!

If you've never met anyone who's listened to an entire Steeleye Span song or can name Maddy Prior as their lead singer, you either need to get out more or find new musical friends.

Saw 'Span open for, I believe, 'Tull once. They blew chunks. They might as well have been wayward monks.

That's pretty hard to believe.  And also rather dismissive of Steeleye Span and Maddy Prior and their contributions.  They were pretty closer to the first to do what they did, and they were certainly among the best.  Off the wall for sure, with a heavy rock song called "Allsion Gross" that had NO PERCUSSION at all, yet can blow most so called hard rockers out of the water.  As far as albums, try "Parcel of Rogues" from beginning to end.  Plus dear Maddy shares by birthday.  Case closed.

Those who've never really listened to a SS album and who also happen to like a kind of Tull-like folk rock are missing out.   I think the band has a bad rep as an acoustic, hippie, period-music group, but they were also heavy and bluesy as often as folkie.   Wake up !

Dead wrong. I have, and I can, and so can a lot of people I know. You should stop making generalizations based on heaven knows whatConfused.

Steeleye Span are my least favourite of the "big three" of English '70s folk rock, though I do enjoy their music, and rate Maddy Prior quite highly as a vocalist. Steely Dan, on the other hand, have become great favourites of mine thanks to my husband (also known as MickyWink). On the whole, two excellent, though very different bands.

Maybe Pedro doesn't get out and meet lots of people, but even if one did, the topic might never come up.   I personally know two people who that definitely is not true of, my brother and his wife (she's a bigger fan than he is). After I played Perry Leopold's Christian Lucifer in its entirety on their music system at their house (I have only visited them a few times over the years), they played a Steeleye Span album in its entirety, and we talked about the music and history of both. I also have a friend who had at least one Steeleye Span record which he played at least once in my presence (never owned a Steeleye Span album myself) -- actually, I think the album belonged to his brother. Whether he could have named the lead singer, I don't know, I don't remember it coming up in conversation. Had I spoken to his brother about it... well, I'll probably never know now.

Yeah I also know nothing of this other deal. But whoever they are they're up against The Dan here son who have, imo, the best first 7 albums of.. anyone. Then when you throw in the solo Fagen stuff it just isn't fair. Slam dunk vote for SD.

Indeed!

The results of this poll are actually tempting me to go back and listen to some Span, a thing I haven't done in thirty years or more. I never really got into them, but perhaps the fault was mine.

Steely Dan. Early Steeleye Span was good but they went off the boil very quickly for me. I think Fairport and The Albion Band (in all it's myriad forms) are way better.

Me too Span all the way for me.  Heck I recently listened to all 36 of their cd's back to back with live ones included but no compilations.  Still ringing in my ears.  Took me ages to get back to listening to something else.  Fairport felt flat after that for a while with me.  Maddy is just too good.

Steely is good but would never be able to get through theirs back to back with same enjoyment.
