Focus 11 has just been released. However, if all albums listed are counted, it is twelve. So, which one should be counted as the 7th? 1st: Focus Plays Focus/In and Out of Focus 2nd: Focus II/Moving Waves 3rd: Focus 3 4th: Hamburger Concerto 5th: Mother Focus 6th: Ship of Memories ... 7th: ??? ... 8th: Focus 8 9th: Focus 9/New Skin 10th: Focus X 11th: Focus 11 |

Thanks for your Focus 11 review (I was simultaneously writing my Family Album review!  ).About the confusing album numbers, I have no theories as I'm not (yet) very familiar with post- Mother Focus stuff in general. What's your guess?

Interesting coincidence! Well, one could argue that the Akkerman & van Leer album is not really a Focus album (despite being called "Focus"), but one could also argue that Focus con Proby isn't really a Focus album either, but rather a Focus con Proby album (with Proby guesting and not being a full memer of the band as far as I understand). Personally, I would say that the Akkerman & van Leer album sounds more like Focus than Focus con Proby. Both albums were included in the recent box set Hocus Pocus. |

In my CD collection, I file the Akkerman & van Leer album Focus between Ship of Memories and Focus 8. I don't have Focus con Proby on CD, and I don't know where I would put it if I did as it would mess up the numbers

The official position I believe is that Focus con Proby is the 7th Focus album as Philip Catherine replaced Akkerman in the group. The Thijs van Leer/Jan Akkerman duet album, Focus, is just the title of the album, not the group Focus. No evidence that this is correct, just my understanding (read belief).

I would have thought Ship Of Memories would be the "extra" album since it's a collection of outtakes rather than a focused (pun intended) album of new music. I originally intended to construct the poll in differently so that one would be voting for the album that should NOT be counted as part of the chronology, and to include Ship of Memories as an option. But I made a mistake when creating the poll, so I changed the setup to the above. I agree with you, that one could argue that Ship of Memories (even if 100% Focus) is not a proper, original album release, but a compilation. |

Yeah, I think you are probably right. However, like I said above, you could argue that the same is true of the Focus Con Proby album - that it is not a release by the group Focus, but instead a one-off, self-titled collaboration under the artist name of "Focus Con Proby".
