"Red" is one of the very best albums in the canon of King Crimson. The same can not be said for "The Yes Album" and the canon of Yes.

My favorites King Crimson albums are :"In a Court of Crimson King", "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" and "Starless and Bible Black" ( three masterpieces) but... I consider "The Yes Album" better !!!

Tough call. Easily my favorite Yes album against the final statement from my favorite incarnation of the Crimson King. Too close to call, weenied out and went with both..

Red easily. The only song I really like on The Yes album is Starship Trooper, and then I like it so much better live, that I could actually do without that album.

^ I'm guessing because you're looking at it from a standpoint of creativity & innovation which Red embodied (especially at the time). Whereas if you look at The Yes Album as a rock record along side Meddle, Tarkus, and Aqualung, it is equally powerful.

But I usually fail to connect with Yes and to me very little comes
close to Meddle. I think my appreciation of Red is more about my
physical and emotional response to the music on it. I don't know if I
think much about creativety or innovation at all. Not as measurements as
for why something is "good" - but it might seem that way as I happen to
enjoy a lot of abstract, dissonant or "far out" stuff. Actually Red feels
more like a band who's harvesting the fruits of prior experiments and
innovations - rather than still pushing things forward. In many ways I
think of it as a full circle return to their debut. Five years older,
wiser and lot darker. But there's no Larks' Tounge-suite or Fracture to
be found on it. Its mostly very distinguishable and memorable "songs"
(with Providence placed dramaturgically the same place as the second
part of Moonchild) which probably explains why its their second most
popular album outside "the prog-community".

Never really thought starless was that good. Nice intro but once the vocals come in it’s just a solid track after that. Title track is the highlight. Nothing on this album comes close to trooper or disgrace

The Yes Album has never been that high on my list of the classic era Yes projects, whereas "Starless," just on its own, is clearly--by all objective standards--the greatest piece of music ever written by human beings.

Well although I voted for Red and partly agree , I do think that The Yes Album is one of their best perhaps only bettered by Fragile, Close To The Edge and Relayer. I'd probably tie it with Drama after those 3 so it's well up there imo. I just wish they could have found something better than A Venture to finish the album and the inclusion of a random live track ( The Clap) also jars a little but Starship Trooper , Yours is No Disgrace and I've Seen All Good People are undoubtedly solid gold prog tracks.

Yes for me. Red is a great album, but the only track from it I absolutly adore is One More Red Nightmare. Starship Trooper and I've Seen All Good People are on a similar level and overall the average quality on The Yes Album is slightly higher.

^For me the Yes album was one of my favorite things several years before Red ever came out...so it holds a special musical place for me. And I never warmed up to Providence on Red nor Fracture for that matter on Starless....both are too 'noisy and jarring' for me. And KC is probably my favorite prog band btw.

The Yes Album was my first Yes album, and indeed one of the first prog albums I ever listened to. I hold it in higher regard than Fragile, and I often prefer it to Close To The Edge. Honestly one of my all time favorite albums.
Red is great, but it's at the opposite end of the spectrum than The Yes Album. To me, The Yes Album is utterly cheery and happy. Even its dark moments seem to come from a place of joy and wonder. Red is a dark, mildly disturbing experience, rooted in melancholy and paranoia. While it is my favorite King Crimson album (of the few I've heard so far), King Crimson don't hold as much sway with me as Yes, though they're often more interesting.
But it comes down to the songs. The Yes Album has about 0 filler (A Venture is charming and The Clap is bloody brilliant). Red has Providence, which I enjoy in the context of the album, and I find sets an unsettling mood very well...but doesn't mean much to me, even surrounded by four other incredible songs. The Yes Album it is!
------------- Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

Relayer is Yes’s jazz-rock/fusion album, Yes is their proto-prog album, 90125 and others their crossover albums, Talk is their heavy prog album (maybe?)... and The Yes Album is definitely Yes’s prog-folk album.

Holds a special place for me as well. As a poor student at the time I was swapping albums with a friend. I got him into Yes with this album and he got me into Genesis with SEBTP. I have to say I got the better end of the deal although TYA is a very fine album. Despite all that Red is the superior album to TYA.

The 5-Star Yes album over the 3-Star Red album, but it beats being Starless.

It looks like I already voted in this poll. My opinion hasn't changed though because it's still Yes for me. The title track to red is very repetitive and so that brings it down for me and so does the improv track. Also, while I think starless is overall a great track it gets a bit too frantic towards the end(to the point of sounding too chaotic). TYA, while not perfect has fewer flaws imo. Neither is really the best by either band though. I suppose TYA is special for me because it's the only Yes album (and prog album too for that matter) that my dad had when growing up so it became a reference point later when I got into the band via their poppish(but still very good) 90125 album.

When you compare these albums to other albums in their own discographies. I would say is red is a more crucial album in king crimsons history than the yes album is in yeses history. And I do remember liking red more than the yes album so. Red gets my vote.
