Subject: Similar songs to Tarkus? (ELP)

I'm kind of obsessed with tarkus those days, could you give some songs that are similar? I'm getting bored with it..

How about Quill - Sursum Corda? The entire album is a single song in two movements. Another cool song that's very similar to Tarkus is: Fugitive by Duncan Mackay from the album Score.

Just curious, how do you quantify "similar"?
By length, theme, instrumentation?
The thing about Tarkus is that it is absolutely unique.
I suppose Triumvirat's Illusions on a Double Dimple might qualify, or perhaps Mediterranean Tales (Across the Water) might as well.

I would like to know other songs that: are composed of movements, have their rhythm often changing, with ambitious sonritoes etc..

I already wrote this in the ELP poll elsewhere: The album "Reise zum Mittelpunkt des Menschen" of Stern Meissen (from East Germany when it was still communist) is probably the best fit I know.

See the ELP soundalike poll thread. Lot's of good suggestions in there especially Triumvirat. I recommend PLP also.

Sonritoes?
Ça se goupille bien, I will definitely add it to my PA vocabulary.

I second This. Tarkus is one of a kind.

So basically any Symphonic prog tracks that are 20 minutes or so?
Although not a ELP soundalike ( more Yes if anything) I would recommend the band Glass Hammer. Fred Schendel is extremely well versed with Emerson's stylings and you can hear a lot of that on the album Chronomotree. Also Disc One of The Inconsolable Secret is just 2 long tracks and is very tasty!

^ Aye. Inconsolible secret, disc 1 The Knights...Veru good. Especially track 1...

Then go die away listening to Rachel Flowers do this piece on solo piano ... and if that doesn't grab you then watch her do this on organ ... and if that doesn't grab you ... I recommend going outside and listening and watching cars drive by!
If you don't realize that is one of the great compositions by a great composer in the 20th century ... then ... just go ahead and go back to listening to rock'n'roll ... ELP/Keith simply isn't for you, I don't think! I imagine that you are just awestruck by its "ferocity" in the way that all 3 guys "attack" the music ... but watching this on Rachel's hands, defines this piece of music ... as a lot more ... rarely does ANY KIND OF MUSIC going back 500 years blast your imagination so far and so fast ... but I don't know if saying something like this on a fan board that seems to love top ten too much, is as valuable a comment on MUSIC as it needs to be.
The FAN is NOT EVER the music!

You missed the point (again) - he said he was obsessed with it but has apparently played it to the point of getting bored with it so wants something similar. You could have just suggested Rachel Flowers without being abusive.

I've already seen the Rachel's one and to be honest I prefer the Keith Emerson Band's Concertante one!
I do catch the sensibility of this music and how it's unique. But I was just asking if someone new some songs which would be almost as good as it but less known. I have some exemples of unknown prog songs that nearly exceeds some of the best songs by Genesis and was nothing but wondering if there was any song that could be the same.

Can you provide links to samples? I've searched multiple pages of Google and YouTube and have not found any samples of this album. (Yes, there are samples of other works by Stern Combo Meissen, but they don't sound anything like ELP).
I think I found it, but not so sure:

...but be careful. Later they did some truly terrible pop stuff (I still quite like "Stundenschlag" that came after "Reise", although arguably they there already left prog territory, but what follows then is really forgettable). On the other hand "Weisses Gold", which came before "Reise", may also be of interest.
I saw "Reise zum Mittelpunkt des Menschen" for about 10 Euros on amazon.de.

^ I'm with you. I saw a 7-CD package of Stern Meissen that is selling for around $40-$50, but some CDs had ratings (here on PA) as low as 1.3! I can't remember the last time I saw ratings that low!
The package included "Reise...", "Weisses...", and the original live "Stern Combo Meissen", which seem to be pretty good. So 3 good CDs for $50, maybe it's still worth it.

That may depend on how much $50 is for you... I like the band and their first four albums a lot, but I'm not objective. The band played a special role in my youth and will always be dear to me, although I see that also the first four albums can be criticised in various valid ways. You can check some more stuff out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91t49W931Dc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWQePMJaB_s
(The first live album has good stuff but is a bit uneven.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouKmm6vqivw
(Weisses Gold has a somewhat annoying narrator, particularly if you don't know German and can't follow the story.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqHOy-hNxpo
(This is an excellent song from Stundenschlag, maybe even their best, despite that album scoring 1.9 here.)

Back to the question at hand...
Here's some ELP-ish work by Nexus on their Metanoia album. Not especially Tarkus-like, however.
Many other examples on this album, but it does have some foreign-language vocals, as the band is from Argentina.

I see that you have dived into Stern (Combo) Meissen and wrote some very nice reviews!
The band is still touring by the way (although only Martin Schreier remains from the old days, and probably they won't do much outside Germany's east).

Thanks for your kind remarks! Yes, I really enjoyed diving into SCM. Thank you for turning me on to them!
I bought the 7CD box set for $42. I think there are 4 good albums, so $10.50 for each isn't too bad. The last two (Nachte and Taufrisch) -- although they aren't prog, they are still good 80's synth pop. Well done, in fact. So all in all, it was a pretty good deal.

If you mean bands with prominent keyboards (especially Hammond organ), and lengthy mostly instrumental tracks, these came to mind:
Triumvirat
Glass Hammer (particularly Empty Space – Revealer and The Knight of the North)
Par Lindh Project
Nathan Mahl
The Flower Kings (some parts)
Anglagard (some parts)
Check out this: total Emerson rip-off Not bad , the guy can play some Hammond chops. 3:35 is especially stunning
Jordan Rudess also contributed to the genre: 10:36 very Emersonesque solo

Mosh is as much SPIRIT as all of you, so I wonder where the ignorance really starts and ends!
I am not here to "knows what is good for us all" ... I'm here simply because too much of this site is about everyone kissing everyone and supporting their top ten bits and pieces, and not showing enough taste/touch/beauty in their acceptance of MUSIC ... the real thing, not just top ten crap!
TARKUS is not a top ten piece ... and ELP knew it ... and attacked it like it ... and that makes it even more important ... the fact that so many folks don't even listen to its very lyrics!
... and of course, never EVER realize what a great piece of composition it really is ... and how it will be remembered for a long time past our own lives. We can discuss "ignorance" after evaluating what you have given an ear to in your lifetime and all the rest that is out there that so few give a f**k about! AND CALL THEMSELVES PROGRESSIVE something or other!
