From this point on if you had to chose only two decades for prog which would it be? Are you burned out on certain decades? This is not about which is your favorite necessarily just that if you had to chose from this point on what would you prefer to listen to. I have allowed multiple choices for this poll but please only choose two.

For me it would more mid 60"s to late 70"s, and late 90's to mid 2000's.

naturally.. the two best decades.. the 70's and the 2000's...  and I'd rate them near equally in pound for pound great albums..

Great post. 60's not a lot, unless you want to hear the first KC forever. 70's no doubt was excellent. 80's sucked for prog. 90's getting better, but not as good as 2000 through 2010. I'll go 2010 - 2019.

The 80's did suck for most things prog but I didn't want to not include it. Same thing with the 90's.

Went with 70's and 00's. Quality and volume. I would imagine that half the votes, as is the case now, will go to the 70's. Unless someone is completely into "modern" prog, I don't think anyone would choose two non-70's decades.

I am voting for the 70's and the current decade.  So much great progressive music then and now.

I actually was originally going to make it just one decade but changed it to two at the last minute. I figured three would be a bit much and not as much fun. If it was just one then we all know 95 percent on here would probably vote for the 70's.

80's & 00's

As an avant head the 80's is a great decade of music. I've got all the 70's stuff memorized so don't need to keep listening to it. The 2000's saw an explosion of good music.

The 80's might be the best for RIO and avant because musicians were making the music because they wanted to even though they knew it wasn't marketable and wouldn't sell. That took guts during that decade and while I'm not the biggest avant head I certainly admire that against the grain attitude they had then. Any prog really even neo had it but especially bands like Univers Zero, However, Cartoon, Djam Karet etc. Anyway, I knew at least one person would vote 80's and suspected(and rightfully so)it would be an avant head. ;)

70's obviously, and... 90's? Well I love Spock's Beard but what else. So it's between the 80's and 60's. The 80's has Saga and still some pretty good Genesis and Yes, plus those classic first four Marillion albums. But the 60's has that first KC album.. not mention the Beatles, and those early Mothers albums. 60's win. 60's and 70's it is.

70s and 10s for me

I chose 70s and 2010s just so I can get most of the classics plus open myself up to new things. Although if 2020s was an option I might choose that so I can remain current starting next year (not that I'm particularly current... But it doesn't hurt to try!).

The 70s was bar none the greatest decade for music of all types. The 2000s was an excellent revival as well. So i'll go with those two

Given my age most of my key musical upbringing was in the 80s including lots of good stuff that now counts as prog. No way not to vote for them. And then, as much as I want to appreciate more recent stuff, no way to drop the 70s. But the question hurts, I'll lose out on loads of good stuff from the 90s to today. Top music exists at any time.

I can't choose the second decade. Obviously the 70s is the first choice and then what? Every decade has music I enjoy. Very tough choice to choose the second one (for me).

Well, in my opinion there very few true prog albums in the sixties(maybe half a dozen) one of which of course would be King Crimson's debut. I added it as a decade because I know many on here would be disappointed and upset if I didn't include it.

Hi,

I'm concerned with the question ... I've been listening for 50 years, and to specify which time is best is stupid (for me) and insane. It's like asking if Mozart's time was better than Beethoven's ... and my only response and idea is ... folks simply are not listening to the music to know better than consider a topic like this.

There is great music everywhere, but some folks simply won't listen to it ... it was happening in the 60's and 70's and it is happening now ... and because of the MEDIA, the elitism that comes with it is sick ... totally sick and ugly in the worst terms! Cry

I'm sorry you feel it's a stupid question. Everyone has their favorites and I wanted to see where people stand on that. As you can see some people only prefer music from one decade and don't bother with others. This was meant to be fun so sorry if the poll offends you in any way.

I'm surprised there's so few votes from the 90's since it was a really exciting time period for the genre with a lot of good stuff coming out. I guess most people on know Dream Theater and one or two others but really there was a whole lot more.

Definitely the 1970s.  After that, dunno.  Every decade since has had some great prog.  I would literally have to go through my reviews and count the number of 4 star and greater reviews from each decade.  I really have no idea, but it might be a fun exercise

The worst decade for me for music were the 2000's because I didn't go online until 2010, so I had no idea just how much good music was out there until I went online and realised you could watch music videos on the Internet. I'm mostly re-discovering the marvellous music of the 1960's and 70's that passed me by at the time, although there's a tremendous amount of modern music I like too.

I enjoyed the 80's too (nowhere near the 70's of course), but I loved Fish era Marillion, and those great King Crimson albums in the Discipline series.

Mostly this one for me too. I guess the other one would be 60's because of some of the early prog stuff (or else, just include 69 as part of the 70's ), and perhaps 00's (mostly for prog metal).

1.  Seventies.  Or better yet, let's say '67 - '76.

2. I'm gonna' say the 2010s.  I've been digging a lot of music from this decade.  Tons of great stuff out there, and the offerings are so diverse; more to choose from than ever before.

there were so many great psychedelic bands in the 60s. yes, for the definition of most people here their music was not "prog". but I don't really care about that; I love the rock music of the 60s (and the 70s), and not just prog.

there was not much interesting stuff in the 80s for my taste except for the albums of Mother Gong, Amon Düül UK and the Ozric Tentacles. many artists experimented with drum machines in the 80s, which resulted in some horrible albums (the third part of Mother Gong's "Robot Woman" trilogy immediately comes to my mind Dead; the first two parts are excellent though). thankfully the artists who experimented with them (Peter Hammill was among them too Dead) quickly realized the error of their ways

70's obviously as everyone should be picking as one of their choices otherwise WTF??!

the other decade is an interesting . Definetely not 60's (not enough prog) and 80's (just the worst decade for everything) so it's down to 3 decades
90's - a proper prog revival and some great symph releases. Also Prog metal really got going
00's - a ton of good stuff but would any of my favourite albums be in this decade at all? I'm struggling a bit with that.
10's - now some real masterpeices and a good handful of albums that would make a top 50 list for me from the likes of Anathema , Big Big Train and Steven Wilson. So this gets my second vote but its tight between this and 00's.

Well, there sure are very few results from a decade that was the so called revival of prog. This proves what I have suspected all along which is that it was a revival of bands but not necessarily fans. Jeez, there's even more votes for the 80's for crying out loud.  So yeah I'm surprised at the lack of votes for the 90's and the high number of votes for the 60's(which imo was mostly psych and proto).

70s and 2000s. It would leave some sacrifices, though. No Trespass (I think of that as 69, but I should check it’s release date), No Shut Up ‘N’ Play Yer Guitar (although it constructed out of 70s live recordings), No Momentum, No Guitar Noir, etc.

OH YES!! Thumbs Up I wish 1967 to '76 was a complete decade because that was the best decade ever for music!

What happened in 77 that was so terrible? Confused

Well technically, it is a complete decade as it is a period of 10 years.  Nothing says they all have to begin with the same digit Wink

Finally another vote for the 90's. It's still in last place though. Yeah, bands like Ozric Tentacles, Echolyn, After Crying, Mastermind, Par Lindh Project, Anglagard, Ars Nova, Porcupine Tree, Mr. Bungle, Dream Theater, Djam Karet, Isildur's Bane, Solaris, E-motive, The Flower Kings, Pye Fyte, Ayreon, Anekdoten, Magellan, Enchant, Pain of Salvation, Discipline, Salem Hill, Arena, Crucible, Glass Hammer and Spock's Beard as well as others all suck. Right.

In that case, I'll vote for 1967 to 1976 as being my favourite decade for music, because it encompasses the late-1960's Psychedelic Rock era, the early 1970's classic Progressive Rock era, and also includes the Glam Rock and Motown eras too! What could be better!? Smile

I'll take a pass on the Glam (that stuff really rubs me the wrong way), but that era was loaded with some great jazz and funk as well as all the others you mentioned.

No, that's not how many use the word, decade. It is for many, a specific period of 10 years that spans each multiple of 10. Personally, I used to share your more flexible interpretation, but I adjusted my understanding of the word many years ago after a being called to task by a more senior individual on the meaning of 'century'. I originally considered it simply any span of 100 years. Apparently some people are adamant in considering 1999 and 2001 not only two different decades, but two different centuries. It seems plausible me, though, that there may be a potentially widespread variant interpretation consistent with yours.
