Interesting idea I had, in each case I greatly prefer one album over the other. Gonna sit on this one for a bit before I vote.

I just bought the two Van Der Graaf Generator albums in the poll last week, although I haven't listened to them yet. I always listen to my albums in alphabetical order by genre, and I'm still on "A" for Argent at the moment. Smile

Ah remind me which ones you got? I hope Godbluff was among them!

Trick of the Tail = 4* / Wind & Wuthering = 4*

Starless & Bible Black = 4* / Red = 5*

The Yes Album = 5* / Fragile = 5*

Least We Can Do Is Wave = 4* / H to He = 4*

That's my assessment, so my vote goes to Yes on this one.

I bought the same two VDGG albums from 1970 that are in the poll. Smile

Ok, I know how i'll decided my vote

1: Red (8)
2: Trick (7)
3: H to He (6)
4: The Yes Album (5)
5: Least We Can Do is Wave(4)
6: Wind and Wuthering (3)
7: Starless and Bible Black (2)
8: Fragile (1)

King Crimson: 8 points
Genesis: 10 Points
VDGG: 10 Points
Yes: 5 Points

Since Trick is my favorite between the Four Genesis and VDGG i'm going with Genesis

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes!!!!!
Genesis is a veeeeerrrrrrryyyyyy distant second.

Between Yes and Genesis, I would add:

Moody Blues - On the Threshold of a Dream / To Our Children's Children (1969)
Kansas - Song For America / Masque (1975)
Rush - Fly By Night / Caress of Steel (1975)

I considered the later two, but figured they wouldn't stand a chance. If it were Kansas S/t and Song for America I might be scratching my head myself as those are both very strong releases!

1 TOTT 4* W&W 4*
2 TYA 4* F 3*
3 S&BB 2* R 3*
4 TLWCDIWTEO 2* H to He 2*

Personal taste, of course, but I just don't enjoy most KC and VDGG.

That's my assessment, so my vote goes to Yes on this one.

interesting method

My turn:
Gen: 5 and 3 = 8
Crim: 3 and 4 = 7
VdGG: 4 and 3.5 = 7.5
Yes: 4.5 and 3 = 7.5

missing from the list Crimson's Poseidon and Lizard: 3.5 and 5 = 8.5

no vote Tongue

VDGG and KC. Vote VDGG for balance.

King Crimson, for the following reason:

the Yes and VDGG albums were by groups just then discovering their musical voice; the Genesis pair showed a band at the beginning its downward career arc.

But Crimson in 1974, and the album Red in particular, represented the pinnacle of Progressive Rock in the 1970s.

Fragile was a December '71 release in the UK, and hit the US in '72.

Depends on your point of view. On a site like this one many would agree. However, from a popularity and success standpoint, Genesis were just getting started. Nothing downward about that arc

EDIT - damn typo

Yes Album/Fragile for me. While the others are good to very great, it doesn't get better than these two Yes albums for this poll at least.

Least We Can Do is Wave/H to He for me. "Red" is amazing but starless is not as good. Both Yes and Genesis albums are classic too

I'll take Yes from the selections provided...

...but would choose ELP - Tarkus / Pictures at an Exhibition (1971) as a preferred un-included choice
