Subject: Collaborators' Top Albums of 2019

Welcome to the 2019 Prog Archives Collaborators Album of the Year
A year after teaming up with French neighbors
Poil to form Piniol, Bourg En Bresse based ni releases their 2nd LP, Pantophobie.
This primarily instrumental album is a heavy hitter, rich with outrageous
polyrhythmic texture. This quartet has emphatically made themselves a fixture
on the heavy end of the modern RIO scene.
New faces to Progarchives.com in 2019, Tokyo's De Lorians, bring a youthful
interpretation of the Canterbury
sound to the 21st century stage with their self-titled debut LP. Highly
textured recording that recalls the classic sound of Supersister and Soft
Machine.
Forged by the unholy union of Oranssi Pazuzu
and Dark Budha Rising, Finland's
Waste of Space Orchestra combine a sonic metal assault with
psychedelic ambience on their debut, Syntheosis.
Another release for Boston's Bent Knee, another spot in
Progarchives.com collaborator's top 10. 2019's You Know What They Mean
sees the band continuing to tread a path of deep, yet accessible compositions
punctuated by Courtney Swain's dynamic vocals.
Ståle Storløkken's fusion outfit goes big in
2019 with two full-length live releases, Psychedelic Backfire I and II
recorded in their home stomping grounds of Oslo. Both land in the PA collaborator's
top 25 with the latter hitting the 6 spot.
UK proggers Big Big Train released
two LPs in 2017 and saved 2018 for a live release. 2019 saw them return with
another Progarchives.com collaborators top 10 spot with Grand Tour.
Their sound continues to harken to early-middle period Genesis.
Tied for 3rd this year is Sweden's Opeth with their
lucky 13th studio LP, In Cauda Venenum. While Mikael Åkerfeldt has
kept his vocals clean since 2011's Heritage, the current material is
arguably the heaviest since their departure from their more extreme early
days. The album was released with both English and Swedish language vocal
options.
Our other co-owner of the number 3 spot is non
other than France's
immortal parent of the Zeuhl sub-genre, Magma. 2019's release, Zëss
is the Kobaian word for "the end of everything" (make of it what
you will). The recording is a departure from previous works, as it includes The
City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as Christian Vander stepping
out from behind the drum kit for Swedish Zappa alumn, Morgan Ågren.
New
York's Izz has been around for over 20 years
and released their 9th LP, Don't Panic in 2019. The album's Douglas
Adams references not being lost on this author, it should noted how the album
soared to this year's runner-up spot in the same way that bricks don't. Rich
compositions, exemplified by the 18 minute epic, 42, often compared to
classic Yes and Gentle Giant texture Don't Panic like a virgin
pangalactic gargleblaster. Amazingly clean production. This is a band that
really knows where its towel is.
"...The music is top-notch
progressive music with non-standard patterns, changing meters and melodies,
and complex themes..." - TCat,
PA Collaborator
"...It is simple because it is
incredibly accessible, an album it is possible to fully enjoy with a smile on
the face the very first time it is played, yet these guys are creating
arrangements which are massively over the top..." -Kev Rowland, PA
Special Collaborator
...And The 2019 Prog Archives Collaborator's
Album of the Year!
After the previous two years' that were
absolute runaways, Scandinavia's reign at the top is over as UK's IQ
nabs the 2019 album of the year in a close vote. IQ has remained a fixture in the
Neo-prog scene for nearly 40 years. Their previous LP, 2014's The Road of
Bones was the runner-up that year. 2019's Resistance, their 12th
LP release since 1983 is a double CD with nearly 2 hours of music capped by
the 20 minute epics,The Great Spirit Way and Fallout. IQ
again show they are top-tier production wise with a pristine, noise free
recording.
"...RESISTANCE comes across as
a sprawling epic that takes the neo-prog paradigm further into the 21st
century..." -siLLy puPPy, PA Collaborator
"...Resistance is another double- album
of high-quality neo-prog from a band who've been the undisputed kings of the
style for the last quarter of a century..." - Wathur, PA Prog Reviewer
"...The consistency of their writing and
performance, and the technical virtuosity of their playing, as well as
Nicholls' expressive vocals, make them among the best of the best of prog..."
-maani, PA Special Collaborator

Tremendous list. Thanks so much. Nice that Thank You Scientist, and Thieves' Kitchen made the top 50.
Would like to include some not on the list. Marco Minnemann, Body Hound, and The Aristocrats.

I have no explanation why this year the top cells of the table are symmetric when last year's were not. I tried everything to get them to be equal with one another last year to no avail. Somehow they magically lined up this time.

I vote this for the worst album of the year. Resistance is a 3 star album tops.
Good work on the list, but man resistance was a major letdown in my book.

You deserve so much thanks for doing preliminary corrections. I still ended up finding issues like apparently there are 2 different ascii codes for apostrophes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah baby Very nice job Ian
Not that surprised to see IQ on top but then again I don’t really care about the ranking. I just love this way of highlighting albums of the year. Sort of like a recommendation list on behalf of the collabs.

Great job again, Ian!
Resistance on top of the list was not a surprise; neither is Izz as runner-up. IQ has won the rematch against Opeth. The only surprise - and a nice one - was Magma sharing #3 with Opeth.
My contribution this year has been less than the previous four years. Personal circumstances which gave me less time to have some listens, combined with ageing ears, made me offer a shorter list. Yet I am happy to have found ten worthy albums which would have made it to any of my previous AotY lists from 2015 to 2018:
1. Izz - Don't Panic (2) 2. Jordsjø - Nattfiolen (12) 3. Kayo Dot- Blasphemy (44-46) 4. iamthemorning - The Bell (29-30) 5. Big Big Train - Grand Tour (5) 6. Magma - Zëss - Le Jour du Néant (3-4) 7. The Psychedelic Ensemble - Mother's Rhymes (57-58) 8. IQ - Resistance (1) 9. Epignosis - A Month of Sundays (138-143) X. Supersister - Supersister Projekt 2019: Retsis Repus (57-58)
Honourable mention: Panzerpappa - Summarisk Suite (51-53)
This is the first time I have the #1, the #2 and a #3 in my list.

I'm a big IQ fan so pleased to see it top the list. It's probably their 4th or 5th best album overall but for a band that has been around a long time they should be commended for still putting out decent stuff. Neil Durrant has added a tremendous amount of the programming/keyboard side for me and Paul Cook as a drummer is actually better than he was 15 years ago . Mike Holmes has long been one of the most underrated guitarists while Tim Esau is a rock solid bassist. Peter Nicholls is the soul of the band and without it would just be a good pop band (ref those 2 Paul Menel 80's albums!)
HOWEVER - it has to be said that there is a massive problem with the list and that it's this. The album by Waste of Space Orchestra although officially released in 2019 is only getting a proper general release this year. It finished in the top five of 5 separate collaborators but featured nowhere else on anyone else's list. I only discovered it after the voting closed but based on streaming it I can say that it is utterly brilliant and unique and is exactly what should be topping the list. I say that as an IQ fan and not a lover of anything too 'out there'. I do think it needs to be pointed out.

^Exposure and logistics around releases are the bane of many bands existences. All but a few of the bands on the menu for our little ceremony have limited resources to gain exposure, some to the point of only having the cash in their own pockets and Facebook/Bandcamp to promote themselves. And some don't even go that far. So I don't see the parameters of the release as a massive problem for the list for this particular band, anymore than it ever is. You can see how many bands are on the complete list, meaning most of the 30 voters' lists had a majority unique albums. And that only scrapes the surface of what was available to vote on. I personally listened to at least 150 albums released in 2019 and as usual, was blown away at how many I hadn't heard that showed up in our final list.
What I did get a full listen to was Wate of Space Orchestra. And although I agree with you on many of the album's merits, it did not make my list, primarily on the basis of the vocals. I'm sure I am not the only one that feels that way. That vocal angle wears thin on a lot of people. I knocked another incredible album out of my top 20 for the same thing. I used to tolerate it, but now a band has to be really really really...really really special to overlook that.

My problem is that I just don't listen to enough and my list was very mediocre and not taken from a very wide pool of releases ( probably about 40 at most). I was desperate for an album like this and for me it's a very rare event to hear something like this album. The vocals I have no issue with. They are perfect and I normally hate that kind of thing ( I assume you are talking about the guttural growling for want of a better description and not the female vocals on one track) . I had another listen yesterday and for me it's the most important release for decades. I hear traces of Post rock mixed with psyche and metal. There are lost of different ideas. This is the album that Tool would make if they could!

My list and as mentioned I would have put Waste Of Space Orchestra at number one if I had known about it. The Steve Hackett tugged at my emotional heart strings so that is the reason for placing it number one. IQ I've previously talked about. Nick Beggs is a very clever lyric writer and The Mute Gods 'rock' so that was number 3 . Thieves Kitchen was a nice find for me and a big thank you to whoever recommended that on the forum so number 4. After that its just solid okay releases from my perspective.
1. Steve Hackett - At The Edge Of Light
2. IQ - Resistance
3. The Mute Gods - Atheists and Believers
4. Thieves Kitchen - Genius Loci
5. Opeth - In Cauda Venenum
6. Elephant9 - Psychedelic Backfire I
7. Iamthemorning - The Bell
8. Bent Knee - You Know What They Mean
9. IZZ - Don't Panic
10.The Far Meadow - Foreign Land
11. Big Big Train - Grand Tour
12. Eloy - The Vision, The Sword and The Pyre - Part II
13. Thank You Scientist - Terraformer
14. Elephant9 with Reine Fiske - Psychedelic Backfire II
15. Magic Pie - Fragments Of The 5th Element
16. In Continuum - Acceleration Theory Part One: Alien A

I started out with 2019 waaay too late. There’s just so much music out there I still have to hear...which is both wonderful and a little irritating The latter only because I would’ve loved to have done my homework, properly, before submitting my 20 cansidates. Then again I’ve changed my mind so many times when it comes to albums that it probably wouldn’t have made a difference. I am literally terrible with rankings
The best thing about AOTY? It injects the music collection with new stuff!
...though I have yet to receive a lot of the cd’s I’ve ordered. Most of my AOTY listening has been done over jootoob or bandcamp. I am genuinely looking forward to spending some more time with all of these releases..including the ones I pick up out of sheer curiosity when trawling through this list The De Lorians album is about the only one I’ve gotten my hands on as of yet. Very befitting to have it adorn the top-spot methinks

First, thanks to Tapfret for all of the hard work in compiling the list. Second, thanks to TCat for putting the monthly lists together. I'm usually always falling behind on new releases and this year I listened to more new releases than I guess I have in the last 10 years combine. Because of this dedication and your hard work, you've both helped me discover a lot of new stuff that I might not have discovered for another 10 years!
My selections fared as follows:
1. Solaris - Nostradamus 2.0: Returnity (66)
2. Quantum Fantay - Yemaya Orisha (62)
3. IZZ - Don't Panic (2)
4. Conqueror - In Orbita (97)
5. Czyszy - Epic May (109)
6. Le Grand Sbam - Vaisseau Monde (11)
7. Jordsjø - Nattfiolen (12)
8. Cheeto's Magazine - Amazingous (38)
9. Voyag3r - War Mask (138)
10. RPWL - Tales from Outer Space (132)
11. Moon Letters - Until They Feel the Sun (154)
12. Aliante - Sul Confine (162)
13. Karakorum - Fables and Fairytales (168)
14. IQ - Resistance (1)
15. Alber Jupiter - We Are Just Floating in Space (177)
16. ni - Pantophobie (10)
17. Goblin - The Devil Is Back (77)
18. The Mercury Tree - Spidermilk (70)
19. Richard Pinhas & Tatsuya Yoshida - Ascension (109)
20. Finisterre - Finisterre XXV (208)

Nice job, Tapfret and TCat. Sorry it was such a bear this year. I love the opening checkerboard display.
Sadly, this will be the first year that I didn't help put anybody into the Top 10 . . . or Top 20 . . . or Top 25 . . . Guess I'm really out of touch. Oh, well! We'll see in ten years how everybody feels about 2019!

I'm late to the party. Great job, Ian and Mike I hope we can still keep doing it this year.
It was the first time my number one was in the top 10. I'm becoming predictable
I've been listening to some stuff I missed and the Ni album is terrific. I listened to the new Gong, since they'll play here in a couple of months, and was pleasantly surprised.
I also have to say I was very surprised to find my album in the top 50 too, it gave me a motivational boost to continue working on new music, so thanks a lot for that
Anyway, here's my list with the respective places:
1. Bent Knee - You Know What They Mean (7)
2. Loosense - Saloon (54)
3. Diagonal - Arc (44)
4. Fire! - Fire! Orchestra : Arrival (42)
5. Hooffoot - The Lights in the Aisle Will Guide You (23)
6. Jonas Munk & Nicklas Sorensen - Always Already Here (118)

Well, my votes seem a bit far afield compared to what ended up in the top 10. Really surprised Electric Asturias and The Psychedelic Ensemble were so far down on the list.
Here are my 10 selections (because 10 is enough, 20 seems a bit watered down):
1.Electric Asturias – Trinity (83)
2.The Psychedelic Ensemble - Mother's Rhymes (57)
3.Thieves' Kitchen - Genius Loci (26)
4.Big Big Train – Grand Tour (5)
5.Tool – Fear Inoculum (15)
6.Steve Hackett - At the Edge of Light (31)
7.Steve Unruh – Precipice (59)
8.Iamthemorning – The Bell (29)
9.Monkey3 – Sphere (31)
10.Banco del Mutuo Soccorso -- Transiberiana (33)
P.S. Thanks again to Tapfret for the fantabulous tabulation.

A bit further down the list but I had a listen to Helium Horse Fly for the first time. Love what I'm hearing so I ordered all their albums as a bundle from Bandcamp as it was a very good price even with the shipping on top. Will have to wait for a while for the delivery but in the meantime I can stream the albums. BTW Their current album Hollowed is officially available for free on YT if anyone is interested ( be interested!)

I bought the Yokai album after finding it in the progressiveears new releases thread in September and it's been on fairly regular rotation ever since.

I thought the new Gong was pretty good and was surprised it only got 4 points in this poll.

I have been using Spotify to check out the top 10. A lot of new to me artists there. I have also been enjoying artists that I was already familiar with. Now have added in some new 2020 releases. There are only two artists on your lists that I am familiar with. If I have some time before my premium trial expires I may check some ot those out. Perhaps it is in part a familiarity thing?

Yes. Live two man lineup from a concert in 2018. (There is also guest vocals on one track).
And yes, it did sneak in under the radar. I only found it while searching discogs for a different album from them.

Now having got a proper CD of The Waste Of Space Orchestra I'm still sticking to my assertion it was the best album I heard from last year. Despite it's initial limited release it still found it's way into the PA top ten.
