Leap Day Thread:- We're taking one giant leap for prog to determine which are  the Top 10 Best Symphonic Prog Albums of all time. Simply list your ten favourite albums by *ten different artists* in order of preference below and then I'll assign points to the albums as follows:-

1st album - 30 points
2nd album - 20 points
3rd album - 15 points
4th album - 12 points
5th album - 10 points
6th album - 6 points
7th album - 5 points
8th album - 4 points
9th album - 3 points
10th album - 2 points

Remember, it's just one album per artist and these are albums that are categorized as Symphonic Prog by ProgArchives definition. Smile

You'll notice that all of the integers (or points) divide neatly into the natural number of 60. Smile

Here are my Top 10 Symphonic Prog albums to kick-off with:-

1. FANTASY - Paint a Picture (30 points)
2. CRESSIDA - Cressida (20 points)
3. ENGLAND - Garden Shed (15 points)

I would have been tempted to choose ten Renaissance albums for my Symphonic Prog Top 10 if I hadn't stipulated the rule of one album per artist. Tongue

Thanks! The only two albums I haven't heard in the Top 10 PA ranking are 9) Anglagard and 10) Harmonium, so maybe I should listen to those albums too. Smile

I got some problems with symphonic prog, I need time to listen in a scientific way to eccentric groups that maybe I like more than Genesis, Yes, Camel (and surely more than EL&P), so I need write my exact ranking.

Anyway, at the moment

1) Genesis - Trespass
2) Yes - Close to the Edge
3) Anglagard - Hybris
4) Cressida - Cressida
5) Camel - Moonmadness

I stop here.

I know. I wanted to give some of the lesser-known British bands a fair chance of winning the poll, so I employed some tactical voting in my selections. It's probably more a case of which are my most sought-after albums, because at the moment, the Paint a Picture album by Fantasy is the Symphonic Prog album I'd most like to add to my CD collection. In addition, eight out of ten of those albums in my Top 10 (with the exception of Moonmadness and Ashes Are Burning) are all albums I've reviewed recently and given a full five-star rating to. Smile

The one album per artist rule feels a bit random. Why that rule?

“Symphonic” according to PA’s categorization? Doesn’t that eliminate all RPI bands?

These are the only albums in my personal Top 300 (you did ask for “favorites”) that might qualify:

1. (1) The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway—Genesis

2. (12) Novella—Renaissance

3. (20) Adventures in Utopia—Todd Rundgren’s Utopia

4. (33) The Geese and The Ghost—Anthony Phillips

5. (40) Hergest Ridge—Mike Oldfield

6. (53) The Difference Machine—Big Big Train

7. (54) Odyssey: The Greatest Tale––Colossus Magazine/Musea Records

8. (65) The Final Breath Before November––Edison's Children

9. (76) Si on avait besoin d’une cinqième saison—Harmonium

10. (80) Omphalos—Kotebel

Here's a Top 10 if only PA "certified" Symphonic bands are allowed (one each per band):

1. (1) The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway—Genesis

2. (12) Novella—Renaissance

3. (33) The Geese and The Ghost—Anthony Phillips

4. (76) Si on avait besoin d’une cinqième saison—Harmonium

5. (80) Omphalos—Kotebel

6. (92) Eve—Karda Estra

7. (93) Relayer—Yes

8. (94) Hamburger Concerto—Focus

9. (238) Emerson Lake & Palmer—Emerson Lake & Palmer

10. (286) Rites at Dawn - Wobbler

I'd love to have included your votes for Mike Oldfield and Procol Harum, but they're in Crossover Prog, so you may want to choose two replacement Symphonic Prog artists (as defined by ProgArchives), before I count up your votes. Smile

There's a method to my madness: I chose the one album per artist rule so that we hopefully get a good cross-representation of Symphonic Prog artists in the poll, otherwise I would have been tempted to choose several albums by the same artist for my Top 10. Smile

That's a great list! There's plenty there for me to check out as I'm not familiar with any of those albums. The only artist I'm familiar with in your Top 10 is Kansas - I  have their first five albums in a box set. Smile

Also Moodies is put crossover prog. Well, you can leave my list out, to me Procol & Moodies definitely are symphonic prog. Persons who put the bands into genres really haven´t made it properly. At least I just can´t understand why Kansas is symph prog but Procol & Moodies aren´t. And please, nobody don´t try to explain me. I think somebody has put there also Focus album, they aren´t too in symph prog.

That's okay. I've always regarded The Moody Blues and Procol Harum as Symphonic Prog too, but I presume they're categorized on ProgArchives as Crossover Prog because they're a hybrid cross between Pop/Rock and Progressive Rock. I also agree with you about Kansas - I wouldn't regard them as Symphonic Prog either. Smile

You'll still be able to vote for The Moody Blues, Procol Harum and Mike Oldfield in my upcoming Top 10 Crossover Prog Albums poll. Wink

I believe I will found easily ten albums from that category.

Have to say also there is lot of pop/rock in Genesis & Yes, also many others symph prog bands, but not at all in the after seventies symph prog bands because they just wanted to be boring symph prog bands without any true willing to make great, innovative music (hope I´m not upsetting any big symph prog fan, that´s just my opinion).

I'd have included the Italians as well, my assumption is that Paul has an RPI poll coming later or he's just showing his obsession with British vintage prog.

Having a separate Top 10 poll for Italian prog albums sounds like an excellent idea to me. Thumbs Up

I could replace two albums (Kansas Leftoverture & Wakeman´s first solo) but really haven´t got third album that I can think of top 10 list (from the PA Symph prog category) that´s not from the artist I´ve already used. So just leave me out.

It doesn't have to be a Top 10 list. You could still put together a Top 8 or Top 9 list and then I can include your votes in the poll, or alternatively, I could count the points from the seven eligible Symphonic Prog albums you've already listed in your current Top 10, excluding Mike Oldfield, the Moody Blues & Procol Harum, when all three of those artists will be eligible for voting in a later Crossover Prog poll. Smile

Looking thru Symphonic albums I love, I was thinking Id like to do top 20!  But, here's what I got:

Relayer - Yes

Scheherezade and Other Stories - Renaissance

Emerson Lake & Palmer - ELP

Fish Out of Water - Chris Squire

Foxtrot - Genesis

Mirage - Camel

Hybris - Anglagard

Concerto For Piano and Electric Ensemble - Kotebel

Bridge Across Forever - Transatlantic

L'Araignee Mal - Atoll

And a just a sidenote:  For four of these: Relayer, Scheherezade, Foxtrot, and Bridge Across Forever, my decision is based primarily on the strength of their longest/best epic tracks, while the rest are based on the
"entirety" of the album--either all great songs, or good cohesion, or both.

Just looked the albums I have reviewed or rated and found out in some reason Finnish band Tabula Rasa has put into symph prog category. Also noticed Focus IS in symph prog, I think I just looked wrong early. But anyway here´s my list:
1. Genesis: the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
2. Yes: Fragile
3. Harmonium: Si On Avait Besoin D`Une
4. Renaissance: Ashes Are Burning
5. Tabula Rasa: s/t
6. the Nice: Ars Longa Vita Brevis
7. Camel: the Snow Goose

Thanks for your vote. I noticed there were two albums by Genesis in your Top 10, so I'm just dropping by to remind everyone that the poll is restricted to one album per artist in your Top 10 choices,  as mentioned in my introduction. Wink

Well, I class them all as symph prog and it is my top ten. Take it or leave it.

How half the stuff that is on PA that isn't even prog is here is a bigger mystery, so tbh, I really don't care how bands are classified. With several members calling Sabbath, Maiden, Queen and Zeppelin prog I really don't think anyone cares that much anymore. :) Peace & Love man, it's just music, it's just a bit of fun :) Don't sweat the small stuff like this :)

I spent almost two hours  coming up with this list. It helped me realize how vast and colorful is this Symphonic Prog category. So many fantastic albums to consider, perhaps the "strongest" lineup of any subgenre here - at least on par with Eclectic Prog I say. Also, I've found many of my favorite releases are already getting dozens of votes, so they don't really require more attention.

To celebrate the amazing variety of Symphonic Prog, I decided to only choose albums that are NOT featured in Top 20 Symphonic Prog Albums by Progarchives. I'm also avoiding the biggest names in the business, just to give some love to slightly underappreciated bands. In other words, I left out the following:
Bacamarte, Camel, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Genesis, Harmonium, Renaissance and Yes.

10. DISCIPLINE. Unfolded Like Staircase
One of the treasured finds of my teenage years. Always enjoyed the rich textures, lovely piano/mellotron parts and respectable vocals, much better than your average, niche progressive rock band of modern era. They really got everything right, be it the epic, autumnal Into the Dream suite, edgy Canto IV opener or endlessly nostalgic Before the Storm. Bonus points for never being sappy and saccharine (well, almost).

9. WOBBLER. Afterglow
Still my favorite Wobbler record, perhaps listening to it some 20 times is responsible. Admittedly they sound very much as if Yes and Swedish prog had a son, but the highlights - namely the latter half of Imperial Winter WhiteIn Taberna coda or immensely gryphonic Armoury are eroded in my head at this point. Yummy piece of music.

8. KARFAGEN. Lost Symphony
I don't know how it stacks up to their later releases, but I'm very impressed. Crafty combination of fantasy themes and sounds mixed with refreshing, jazzy prog of the highest order. It's like, take a bit of Gryphon, Beardfish, Pat Metheny and perhaps some Caravan, mix it together and watch it brew. This is beautiful. Worthy representative of modern prog.

7. SINKADUS. Cirkus
Criminally underrated album. Although the predecessor, Aurum Nostrum, already had a plethora of intriguing moments (and a pretty album cover), I feel Cirkus is more mature and concise. If you're not familiar with the band, imagine listening to Änglagård - sudden mood changes, thumping basslines, angular guitar licks, ominous Hammonds coupled with flutes and cellos... unmistakingly Swedish atmosphere of the time. They sometimes lack in ideas and production, but God, if you are an Änglagård junkie like me (or a Landberk, Anekdoten fan), give this LP a chance please.

6. REFUGEE.
Oh God these guys had all the chops to become big! I think Refugee's debut could rival any ELP release, it's so groovy, virtuosic and lyrical. I won't even single out any song since they all require your attention. While you're at it, check out MAINHORSE as well - less refined, but still a Moraz bonanza.

5. THE FLOWER KINGS. Stardust We Are
Roine Stolt is a brilliant man. I don't know how it's possible to compose approximately ~421 hours of quality prog and still get forgotten about on Progarchives, but he pulled it off. I, for one, am not the biggest Flower Kings fan on Earth, but this man really deserves the praise, even if double albums, a new release every other year and side projects become weary after a while. In any case, The Flower Kings at their very best - I happen to think it's somewhere on this album, most likely the final piece - are infinitely melodic, inventive and fun. I wish Roine was better at auto-censorship - I believe he'd have a bunch of 4.40 albums by now!

This selection is also a shout out to my Dad, who is always looking out for quality prog and digged up Flower Kings for us in late 1990s. Great job, Pap! Wink

4. RICK WAKEMAN. The Six Wives of Henry VIII
Not much to say. It's a terrific record with myriads of interesting licks, very laid back atmosphere, the Rule of Cool, Mr Wakeman and his best perhaps. One of my go-to albums when I crave progressive rock but feel a little tired with heavyweights. I just think it should be a part of any rock collection, I always get good vibes and pure pleasure.

3. CHRIS SQUIRE. Fish Out of Water
If Voyage of the Acolyte is a lost Genesis album, well, this its Yes counterpart. Almost a perfect record with crisp production, jazzy elements, wonderful basslines and tons of creativity. I never could decide if it edges out Rick Wakeman's debut, but here I'll give it a nod - just because it feels more like a 'band' effort.

2. ÄNGLAGÅRD. Epilog
I'm cheating here a bit since there should be no "heavyweights" included, and Änglagård are maybe the biggest name in 1990s prog - deservedly so. Or rather, not the biggest (I see 90s as times of Arena, Pendragon and co.), but the most impressive and unequivocally revered. The only reason why Epilog is less talked about is that, instead of throwing eye melting riffs and passages in your face for 50 minutes straight, it sometimes takes a foot off the pedal... and fills the air ominous atmosphere. Another crazy masterpiece.

1. FOCUS. Hamburger Concerto
Cheerful Insanity of Thijs van Leer & Akkerman's Convoluted Thought Patterns was the proposed title, but the manager persuaded them to go with much more subtle Hamburger Concerto, even though it has nothing to do with beef nor Deutschland. Anyways! If you happen to know a prog initiate thinking all ingenuity is reserved for the likes of Genesis and Pink Floyd, MAKE HIM listen to this album. Most prog outfits would kill to come up with a single song as potent as Birth, Harem Scarem or Hamburger Concerto coda.

Although I deliberately left out anything seventies based I would have included Rick Wakeman - Six Wives , the Refugee album, Triumvirat - Illusions on a Double Dimple and also one that has not been mentioned yet is Socrates - Phos . I love that album and its a very unique late entry seventies wise. However I'm struggling to find it on the PA database although it's definitely symph prog!

I'm slightly regretting my decision to not include any seventies albums as Brain Salad Surgery (my favourite album) would otherwise have been No 7 on 52 points. Oh well we are often told that these lists don't matter Smile

At least Emerson, Lake & Palmer's debut made it to the #12 slot and they only need one more point to make it into the Top 10. I'll have another Top 10 prog poll coming up soon, although I haven't decided which prog sub-genre it's going to be yet. Smile

Great thread. Had fun making this top 10, although, would have been very different if multiple albums from same band were allowed! Embarrassed

2. Genesis: Selling England
3. Yes: CTTE
4. Transatlantic: Bridge Across Forever
5. Moon Safari: Blomljud
6. Flower Kings: Stardust
7. Spock's Beard: The Light
8. Kansas: Point of Know Return
9. Wobbler: From Silence To Somewhere
10. Karmakanic: Who's The Boss

^ There's a slight problem with The Tangent in the last two rounds of voting. They're listed as Eclectic Prog on PA and not Symphonic Prog. Wink

In addition, Big Big Train are listed as Crossover Prog on PA. Wink

But IMO The Tangent albeit not listed as Symphonic Prog on PA, they sure are Symphonic Prog.

It makes sense to go by ProgArchives definition of Symphonic Prog for the purposes of this Top 10 poll, even if we don't always agree on what is Symphonic Prog. Smile

Interesting looking back at this. No need to change the votes, but this is what my list would look like five months later:

1. Close to the Edge by Yes
2: Selling England By the Pound by Genesis
3: A Drop of Light by All Traps On Earth
4: Moonmadness by Camel
5: Leftoverture by Kansas
6: In the Region of Summer Stars (1984) by The Enid
7: From Silence to Somewhere by Wobbler
8: Emerson, Lake & Palmer by ELP
9: To Shatter All Accord by Discipline
10: The Flower King by Roine Stolt

If I had my way about genre classifications, though, I'd have to knock Roine Stolt off the bottom (sorry Roine, nothing personal) and put Big Big Train's English Electric: Full Power up at third.

Yes, it often happens that two albums tie for the same place in a poll, just like in my recent Genesis albums poll for instance, where Foxtrot & Selling England by the Pound were briefly tied for first place. Smile

Ok, then.
1. Duke (does it count as symphonic, though, or just weird prog/pop/jazz/weirdness??)
2. Selling England and Foxtrot
3. CTTE
4. Tarkus
5. Fragile

Edit:
1. Duke
2. CTTE
3. Tarkus
Sorry about that.
I've just noticed I've only included albums by the three probably most successful symphonic bands, so I've managed to extricate a few more albums (by lesser known bands) that are better than the usual lot:
4. Mirage (Camel, though still quite well known)
5. Snow (Spock's Beard)
6. Garden Shed (England, discovered them courtesy of Psychedelic Paul Smile)
Hm... no, that's it.

Interesting looking back at this. No need to change the votes, but this is what my list would look like five months later:

1. Close to the Edge by Yes
2: Selling England By the Pound by Genesis
3: A Drop of Light by All Traps On Earth
4: Moonmadness by Camel
5: Leftoverture by Kansas
6: In the Region of Summer Stars (1984) by The Enid
7: From Silence to Somewhere by Wobbler
8: Emerson, Lake & Palmer by ELP
9: To Shatter All Accord by Discipline
10: The Flower King by Roine Stolt

If I had my way about genre classifications, though, I'd have to knock Roine Stolt off the bottom (sorry Roine, nothing personal) and put Big Big Train's English Electric: Full Power up at third.

A Drop of Light and English Electric are both very special to me. One is 'Symphonic' and one is not (imo) Smile

You're right; A Drop of Light has a lot of Zeuhl influence on it Wink.
Thumbs Up
