Subject: Epic Songs with Female Vocals
Date Posted: May 20 2020 at 01:07
Hello all,
I haven't been around for a while. How are you all travelling in the COVID-19 world?
I present a couple of radio shows on 107.3 HFM in Perth, Western Australia. Twice in every 10 weeks of shows I present episodes that feature only female vocalists as the lead vocals of the songs aired. There can be male backing vocals; however, no male lead vocals, male duet vocals, or prominent male "dirty vocals" (which excludes the like of Lacuna Coil from these specific episodes).
One of my weekly features is an epic tune. My definition of an epic tune is one that is 15 minutes +. These can be an individual song, or a number of songs or suite of songs that have a natural segue from one to the next. That said, because it is radio in a city, I also like to keep the tracks/series of tracks under 30 minutes; a requirement to satisfy station identification and sponsorship commitments.
Finally, to the crux of my query: Are you able to recommend songs/combinations of songs that fit the criteria of 15-minutes to 30-minutes in length, and have a female lead vocalist? Genre is irrelevant. Prog is not a necessity (though generally preferred). I would also prefer non-screaming/non-growling vocal styles. (These things can be in the songs in moderation.)
If you have any recommendations, fire away! ...and I have already aired Renaissance's "Song of Scheherazade".
Thanks in advance.

Try french band Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes. Being a long trippy piece this has a lot of music but also quite a lot vocals.
There's also Circle Of Illusion, they have also a male vocalist here but I think it's the female that takes the spotlight, you can decide if it works for you.

Check out the album parallelograms by Linda Perhacs. Just discovered it and it’s jaw dropping. The title track is one of the scariest pieces of music I’ve ever heard but most the album is incredible prog/psychedelic folk.

In my opinion Kate Bush's "The Ninth Wave", B-side of the Hounds of Love album, should count. It's officially 7 songs, but actually it's a single story and they all belong together and make one great epic.

I would recommend Mostly Autumn but they have every few songs over 15 minutes, and Bryan Josh insists on providing some lead or duet vocals on those that are of that length! But check out some of their 8 - 12 minute songs for your non-epic broadcasts, I'd recommend Carpe Diem and The Gap Is Too Wide in particular.

If you're ok with some jazz fusion:
Apocalypse by Mahavishnu has some female vocals on it. Smile of the Beyond is a nice track.
Also Allan Holdsworth's track Secrets off of his 1989 album of the same name is beautiful, another great vocalist.

Meredith Monk - Dolmen Music - didn't find a full length version on youtube, but there's also this:
Iva Bittova does similarly experimental stuff. The longest I find is only 14 minutes, but many of her albums have a concept and some album sides might qualify. Unfortunately I don't understand Czech, which makes me unable to figure out which.

It’s a great album, and will do. Vadhti Bunyans Just Another Diamond Day is the first to spring to mind. That’s anothef I suggested for PA. I don’t expect you to like it as much, though. My favourite Vashti song is Winter is Blue. These Trails has some of the same feel for me, love that album.

Hi,
Some nice and far out stuff ... loved it!
Anna von Hausswolf
Quite impressive, and an awesome show ... the kind of stuff that would make many folks at the Fillmore think that there was better acid on the stage than on the floor!
And really, that is probably one of the most original things I have heard in a while ... quite amazing, in concert, at least from the couple of videos on the Internet ... and it is a treat to actually see/hear someone incorporate sounds into the flow of the music, instead of it being an effect that comes off as a solo and not as strong/valuable as the music itself.
And, for once, that stuffed up drummer that only knows how to use his snare to drill a hole in your ears, in this case here we have a drummer, that reminds me of the early days of Nick Mason some, just going around the whole thing, and you almost didn't hear a single snare hit ... and all of it was thoughtfully used and it fit the orchestration style for the group, another outstanding feature.
Some great work, from what I have heard ... and worthy of more attention ... and sure hope to see this band around America one of these days ... this is worth it! I'll un-retire from live shows for this!
Frequency Drift's Laid to Rest
Very nice ... and I like the fact that while listening to this I could not even think of another band ... that is far out, and ends up putting a good listen in your mind!
I'm having a nice time hearing these things, but I really could use a few less King Crimson things, and a lot less of the stuff related to Magma. I enjoy Magma to no end, but for my ears almost everything is a cheap copy ... maybe one day I will find something NOT a copy!

Hi,
Joni was a tough one for a lot of stations in those days ... too jazzy to be "cool" and "hip" and not stony enough to be "with it" ... but listening to it these days, one has to consider her "progressive" since almost no one was doing anything remotely as interesting and different within what sometimes might be considered folk material ... with a jazz'y feel that was very different.
This is a superb album that deserves more mentions and attention, if it were not for the fact that we are too much into a "sound", and not the music itself. This is much better than the copykat/cookie cutter material that has the mandated instruments and sounds like .....
BTW ... consider the musicians on it ... makes a lot of our top anything ... not even interesting!!!!
Joni Mitchell
Jaco Pastorius
John Guerin
Wayne Shorter
Airto Moreira
Larry Carlton
... and on backing vocals in various pieces ... Chack Khan, Glenn Frey, J. D. Souther

Yeah, we agree on this. And I do wonder sometimes if the adverse reaction of some critics to this record had something to do with the record being by a woman - getting too far out of step with what was perceived as “proper” for a female artist to do. As though breaking rules and expectations was a male province.
