Though I think Opeth is a progressive metal band, they are in a different category here.

Pain of Salvation, Fates Warning and Sieges Even (not for their highest rated album) are the only of these bands that sit in my top-25 or so PM bands. But then you excluded ex/post metal and Tech/Extreme, where most of my favorites sit. Pain of Salvation is the most consistently enjoyable from the list.

Threshold have edged above Dream Theater in recent years for me. I don't tend to consider Riverside as prog metal (much classier than that!)

I really like most of the bands in the poll .. for me it was a hard choice to make between Fates Warning, Threshold, Shadow Gallery , Savatage, and Symphony X ... I went with Symphony X ... I just play them more these days. Great poll ! special mention to Blind Guardian who I also love but I don't consider fully progressive metal. Tongue

Normally DT would get my vote, but the last few albums have been boring and uninspired nonsense. They should rename the band PRW......Petrucci Rudess Wonking.

Riverside is my new #1

An easy one for me: PoS !!!

So intense/fun/deep/complex/funky/varied/melodic/...

Honorable mention to Ayreon, though.

If it weren't for the fact that nobody threw a vote to SG, I would've went for Sieges Even. (Steffen's lyrics and song titles, alone, make the albums on which he worked great.)

I voted for Sieges Even too, "A sense of Change" (1991) for me its a masterpiece, and i enjoy a lot "The Art of navigating by the stars"

followed closely by Fates Warning and Queensryche.

But im a thrasher, Voivod and Watchtower are my favs bands in prog metal

I went with the magnificent Ayreon, I love Arjen Lucassen, he is a genius!

Also love DT, but I agree their stuff can be hit and miss, particularly since Portnoy left (and earlier, if I'm honest).  But they have done some incredible stuff...

I have to be honest and say I don't have much from the rest.  I've dabbled in a few; Therion are interesting, Threshold I quite like (but don't have any of the earlier stuff), Riverside I have struggled with...

Really should try some Symphony X, and probably a few more from this listEmbarrassed

I made this list out of the Prog Metal Top 100 list and Opeth is in the Tech/Extreme Prog Metal category here. That is just why.

Those two albums are fantastic because they balance complexity, melody, and emotion so well.

The only surprise seems like that Queensryche got no votes. My intention is for the people to choose their favourite band among them, not their "favourite prog metal band". So, for instance I might have chosen Kamelot, even though I don't think they are an actual prog metal band.

Queensryche is quite a giant, and got no votes. Interesting...

they have few weak albums so this could be the reason.

If you had a classic QR album, things would be different.

Aren't Riverside more like prog metal lite though. It seems weird to me that on this website Riverside are listed as prog metal but Haken are heavy prog. I think maybe it should be the other way around.

Though I'm a fan, I wouldn't put Rhapsody (of Fire), Therion, and Nightwish on the archives. Blind Guardian's inclusion is also an oddity. If there were criteria like "kickstarting a genre", "being a standout within the genre"; specifically to give details; a band might acquire the title by "pioneering female fronted symphonic metal" (Nightwish), or "utilizing symphonic constituents within the metal genre" (Therion); thus it might have made sense...

Rhapsody(on fire)are symphonic metal which I consider to be a subgenre of progmetal. Blind Guardian I'm not too sure about. I have one album by them but wasn't too crazy about it.

Blind Guardian is way better than Rhapsody (on fire). Doesn't get much better than Blind Guardian in Power Metal at least.

I'm surprised Riverside is considered metal here. I've heard heavy prog bands more metal than they are.

I picked Diablo Swing Orchestra just because they are so unique but i really love most of these.

Not to me but then again I like that big symphonic sound.

You mean like Haken? LOL

As for Diablo Swing Orchestra the name sounds familiar but I can't say I've heard their music.

Haken has become hard to place. Their first three albums exist somewhere between Heavy and Symphonic, with hints of metal. But the metal sound has increased every single album. You can even hear an increase between Aquarius and Visions. Affinity continues the trend with some crossover elements. Vector and Virus are basically prog metal albums. That seems to be where they are now.

And they've lost me! Too much metal, not enough melodies. I guess that puts me in the "symphonic" category.

I must say that Visions (2011), The Mountain (2013) and Affinity (2016) are all excellent in my book.

I'm sorry. You said Riverside but for some reason I was thinking of Pain of Salvation. I don't really know Riverside that well so I won't make an official comment.

Diablo Swing Orchestra is so avant-garde; not only just because it got 3 votes as a band from the bottom of the list, but also because they grant a wingless demon with wings. (Diablo's Wing Orchestra)

I agree that Vector is prog metal. Virus has not been released yet. Have you heard the entire album? Of the three songs available from Virus it's hard to say if it will be heavy like Vector or not.

Personally, I'm basing it on the three released singles. However, it has been leaked somewhere, and my friend got a hold of the leak. He sent me a link, but out of respect for the musicians, I didn't listen. But my friend did mention it was similar to Vector and that he was underwhelmed.
