I was trying to write something funny in the poll, but maybe I'm not that funny myself LOL

Same rules as the previous interactive prog poll.
A  catchy prog song,
Songs must be from albums with less than 50 ratings/reviews
Any prog subgenre you want.
(No famous prog artists allowed obviously).

Have fun!

This is what passes for catchy in Panhead heaven LOL:

Chrome Hoof (ft. Shingai Shoniwa) - "Knopheria" (from Chrome Black Gold, which has all of 15 ratings)

I can't believe you picked this one, the first thing that came to mind when I thought about a catchy prog tune is Knopheria. Raff you got my vote Embarrassed

Only 28 ratings for one of my favorite Todd albums? I wouldn't call that "famous".
Anyway... Todd Rundgren - Parallel Lines

Question....under the amount of ratings....for the artist/band entirely, or for the particular recording the piece comes from that you are presenting?

the album where the song is taken from needs to have less than 50 ratings.

For this poll, I decided to go with an Aussie group. Although they seem to be well-known by the people on this forum, including debate over whether they belong on this site, none of their albums (including this one) have more than 50 ratings. The song I chose was the song that introduced me to the group in the first place.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Polygondwanaland - Crumbling Castle:

I was going to do Cos' "Mein Maschine ist schön", but now that album is over with 52 ratings (last I looked it had less). The first one I thought of is Can's "I Want More", but Can is too famous and the album it is off has too many ratings. I thought of John Greaves et al's Kew Rhone's "Animal Laminates" but too many ratings (over 60). News From Babel, a few ratings over 50. various instrumentals I could think of from Krautrock and JRF, but not so many songs. Slapp Happy? Could go with something from Casablanca Moon. After Dinner? That's a possibility. Maybe Volapuk's "Where is Tamashii?" Maybe some Canterbury? Kevin Ayers? Too many ratings.

I'll go with Dr. Dopo Jam's "Cowboy Song"

Ok, almost had me stumped for "catchy," "prog," and "obscure."  You all are so steeped in knowledge in this field.  I lived through the classic prog era, it's what we listened to in my pack.  I continued to enjoy many kinds of music and then was in "the business," for a while, so heard a lot of what was popular those years and liked what I did, and didn't what I didn't (which was a lot).  I missed a lot of the 80's resurgence, so am getting caught up, plus listening to newer acts these days, as they are what hits most of the prog shows where I have a horse in the race, so to speak.  In the meantime, as I was learning to play harp, I dug up whatever I could that was innovative in the field.  So forgive another harp piece (although it's certainly not a harp-centric one).  It's astounding what people have done with it.  This is the responsible party for bringing the harp back to popularity.  And he has continued to push the boundaries with it, sometimes in ways of which I'm not fond.  But I love this one.  This piece first came out on a non-rated LP, but the collection this version is also on has 11 ratings.  Prog Folk, but this one's a Prog Rock piece, imo.  Alan Stivell's "Pop Plinn," from A L'Olympia, from 1971.

^^ "Dragon Song" is excellent, I hadn't heard it before, although I'm not sure if it's applicable. While it's called a song it doesn't involve any singing. I wasn't sure if instrumentals were allowed. EDIT: I hear that's not the only instrumental, so perhaps "song" is being used in a more general sense. If instrumentals are allowed, then I might change mine (took me quite a while to think of a song that I thought fit well, but I thought of various instrumentals).

I got some free time so I'll play this time. Plenty of killer tunes so far, I only knew Chrome Hoof but not that particular song.
I talked about this album with Sagi the other day so I'll go with this one (with a single rating):

I wasn't sure about that 'song rule' so I posted it. But I think there is another non vocal one as you pointed out.
And I think it's definitely catchy and it has low voted ratings on PA.
(I didn't post on the Latin music poll...I honestly only know more well known things in that area and felt my contribution would have been a poor one.)

Oh, I hadn't considered if an instrumental would be not eligible.  Cristi, help once again.  I do have another option (one wildly different from this) if singing is a necessity.

Looking at the last poll, it has instrumentals and I know another one did before (I haven't checked out all of the interactive polls), so it seems that I'm using the song term in a narrower way than poll starters. I brought up the song issue in the first poll, asking if mine which was more spoken word counted, and it was included. We did have one specifically for instrumentals. I suggested in the last poll, just a little while ago, that perhaps instead of asking for songs when instrumentals are also includable, we ask for tracks/pieces of music or just ask for songs or instrumentals. Since such a huge amount of my collection is instrumental, knowing this would have made things easier. Since Cristi added those and didn't comment on this after I brought it up, and since it has happened in songs polls before, I think I can quite safely assume that it is fine. I don't think I'll change mine now anyway, although I would have gone for an instrumental had I understood that they were includable.

I've often noticed in topics that people talk about instrumentals as songs at this forum (and maybe at other music forums it's the same). It's rather like how some use classical in a broader way than others. Music that is evocative/ suggestive of singing is often thought of as songs too even without any vocals.

Also, there are a lot of instrumentals in the Prog vein.  I will certainly keep the other one that I almost entered (hey, that one had vocals and no harp!), but this one felt proggier.  If vocals are ending up being required, I have another Stivell piece that has them, albeit in Breton and not a lot.  The other song may fit some other time.

It's interesting because I don't think of instrumentals as songs, it implies singing, thus my confusion. I know various others do. Good to know, thanks for clearing that up.

Okay, so it sounds like there is some question as to whether instrumentals are allowed.  So in the meantime, I will go ahead and post my original idea (which is an instrumental), and if it doesn't qualify, I will post an alternative.

Phish might be a well-known band, but it is under the archives as Prog Related, so it qualifies that way, and also is not what you would consider a "popular progressive band" so it qualifies in that respect also.  The album "Farmhouse" only has 35 ratings, so that qualifies also.  The song I am posting is "First Tube" which is as catchy as all get out and it has two meters going at the same time, so that makes it progressive.  So, here is my first choice.

If that one is disqualified, then I submit my alternate choice.  Brian Eno is a well-known artist, yet the album with his most catchy songs on it is a collaboration with John Cale and only has 46 ratings.  (There is some more experimental sounding stuff on it too, but this is Eno at his catchy-best, which is not something you hear often.)  The vocal harmonics are pretty awesome too.  Here is "Spinning Away" by Brian Eno and John Cale:

I thought you wanted just one poll a week?

OK, anyway, I like the theme... except that it's not the easiest for me, because most things that come to mind have more than 50 ratings.
So I take the opportunity to honour a band that has given themselves a special status by being the last live band I saw before the lockdown, the evening before Italian patient one was diagnosed with Covid-19 in Codogno.
The Legendary Pink Dots... they have a number of catchy melodies, and I choose Princess Coldheart, one of the very few singles that I actually own.

I'm finding a lot of the artists on this poll are ones I'm quite familiar with, so that disqualifies them even though there is some excellent music there.  I'm too familiar with Antique Seeking Nuns, The Legendary Pink Dots and Lucio Battisti, and enjoy all of their music immensely already, but I feel already knowing their music gives an edge to them which is why I can't vote for them.  Unhappy

I am going to choose a band that were really popular in their Beginnings but most PAers stopped liking on or before album VII.  This is the title track from their most recent album from 2014.  Many of the members have changed, but there are still a few originals and the horn section is as good as always.  Since most of you hate AOR this will mostly fall on deaf ears, but I like it and I'm gonna suggest it because damn it is catchy. Big smile

Now that I've voted in the other poll, I think I can get time to participate in this one too. So here is my entry:

Burnin Red Ivanhoe - Ivanhoe i Brøndbyerne (from M144, 1969)

I don't really know how famous Burnin Red Ivanhoe are, but the album M144 has 30 ratings as we speak, so it should be eligible. I don't know how you define catchy, but the track sounds catchy in my world.

Lyric translation:

Ivanhoe, are you smoking Cecil today?
Are you taking coffee and sour drops?
Are you floating high on your 10'th floor
while Rowena is taking her pug dog for a walk?

Ivanhoe, are you running your bicycle into the goal?
Are you tired, so happily tired?
Is the coffee table party of the tournament waiting
with a pretzel that you have paid for yourself?

Abreaction
Abreaction
Abreaction
Abreaction

For what?

Ivanhoe, are you smoking Cecil today?
Are you taking coffee and sour drops?
Are you floating high on your 10'th floor
where Rebecca has lived as hope?

Not the one you have posted. Wink
I wasn't sure, actually I love the whole album from beginning to end (so strange that otherwise of the huge oevre of M.T. I hardly like five further songs... actually if I were to make a list of top ten Manhattan Transfer songs, all nine of Brasil would be in it if maybe not quite on ranks 1-9). Zoo Blues? Notes From The Underground? Jungle Pioneer? Metropolis?

Didn't find many entries that I would describe as catchy. That is the charm of these polls. We all hear differently.

Antique Seeking Nuns - Good song and I'm a big fan of Sanguine Hum.

Valdez - One that stood out for being catchy.

Passport - Video is posted but not a voting option? I liked it.

That subjectivity is interesting. Do I vote for the songs that I like the most? Or the songs I like the most and find to be catchy? Some of the songs I like, I wouldn't immediately think of as catchy. For me, a melody, repeated chorus that sticks with me after the song is over can be a part of that. Doesn't necessarily mean simple, but I find that complexity doesn't necessarily stay with me, while I enjoy and appreciate it as I listen.

^I voted for what I considered catchy. Catchy, to me, is a hook (chorus) that is repeated. Doesn't need lyrics. Some of these submissions did not meet that criteria, imo.

I didn't vote for Lucio Battisti, KG&TLW and Chrome Hoof since I was already familiar with them.
I voted for Dr. "Dope" Jam, Good God and Chicago (the catchiest of the bunch).

Metropolis?

Their album after"Brasil", "The Offbeat of Avenues", has one of their most experimental tracks called "Blues for Pablo" (co-written by Gil Evans who was famous for interesting modal jazz styles) which I thought about putting up, but figured it was a little too far out there to really be considered "Latin-based", but I could have been wrong.  Here it is if you are interested.

Here are my comments if anyone is interested:

Cristi - The Mr. Albert Show – “I’m Not More than a Sign” – Not bad, a great way to open up the poll.  Nice retro sound and definitely a catchy flute riff involved.  Happy, yet interestingly intriguing.  It’s a possible contender.

Raff - Chrome Hoof – “Knopheria” – I find moving videos a bit distracting, personally, when trying to assess music.  But this one still draws me in and I love the vocals.  Again it is very catchy, but by the end my interest lags a bit.  Still, very good.

Mirakaze – Wha Ha Ha – “On the Floor” – This one checks all of the boxes for me.  I love it!  I’m pretty sure this will be a top 3 for me.  Quirky and original, yet still remains very catchy!

Mathman – Valdez – “Black Eyed Susan” – Yes it’s catchy, with it’s solid beat and guitar chords that follow the beat on the verses.  The melody, however, doesn’t hold my interest so much.  Not bad, but not quite there for me personally.

Grumpyprogfan – Todd Rundgren – “Parallel Lines” – I am always curious as to what Will is going to post and I usually really enjoy his ideas, but Rundgren has never appealed to me much (especially his solo stuff).  This one unfortunately is one of those.  No offense.

Shadowyzard – Zaragon – “Fear to Fight” – Not sure if this is Neo Prog, but it sort of reminds me of that.  Remember, this only applies to my own tastes.  It’s not a bad track, but it just doesn’t catch for me leaving me indifferent in the end.

I Prophesy Disaster – King Gizzard & etc. – “Crumbling Castle” – This is one of those bands I keep hearing about and that is on my list to “check out”, but I haven’t done it yet.  One thing I can say about this track is “I love it”.  It’s totally progressive yet it manages to bring in a catchy guitar line all through the track, yet it’s changes through out the track keep me engaged.  Definitely a favorite.

Logan – Dr. Dopo Jam – “Cowboy Song” – Almost, but not quite there for me.

Sagichim  - Antique Seeking Nuns – “Double Egg” – I love this band and was taken in by their music instantly when I first heard them.  I wish they could have had a larger discography, but fortunately, we have Sanquine Hum.  Anyway, I’m too familiar with this to vote for it thus giving it an unfair advantage in my mind.

Micky  - Sweet Fingers – “Good Night Robots” – For me, this one makes up for the Antique Seeking Nuns regret I have.  This is another one that I love and is definitely a contender.  Great choice Mick.

Snicolette – Alan Stivell – “Pop Plinn” – Yes I really like this.  But for me, it’s one that I would have to listen to over time to really appreciate I think.  The beat draws me in quickly, but it might be a bit too complex to have the right “catchy” and “instant” appeal for me to vote for on this particular poll.  It would have been a contender on the instrumental poll a few weeks back.

Dr wu – Good God – “Dragon Song” – This is the type of fusion that I love.  Again, this would have faired well on a different poll and it has nothing to do with being instrumental, it just doesn’t have that catchy vibe that instantly pulls me in.  However, I really like this!

Meltdowner – Ben Levin – “What a Special Day” – Great choice.  It’s catchy and engaging and has just the right amount of oddness that sucks me in every time.  The video was too distracting, so I had to listen without the video to get a real sense of the song as it stands by itself.  I like it much better without the video , even though it matches the song style.  Anyway, this one is a contender.

TCat – Phish – “First Tube” – This one is disqualified for myself, since it’s me.  But this, to me, is a perfect example of how an instrumental track can be catchy.  That main guitar melody that plays out of synch with the rhythm always plays in my head as I try to count out the meter.

Lewian – The Legendary Pink Dots – “Princess Coldheart” – Again, I know this band too well to vote for this one.  Lewian’s tastes and mine tend to be similar many times and I have discovered many a great band from his recommendations.

Mascodagama – Lucio Battisti – “Abbraciala etc, etc.” – Another artist that I am quite familiar with and can’t vote for.  I have always loved this music.  One time, when I was riding the bus through Palermo, I told one of the kids there that was trying to impress me with his English that I was the keyboardist for the band.  He was quite impressed.  Of course, I wasn’t, but he was quite impressed until I told him I was kidding.

Rushfan – Chicago – “Now” – Yeah, they have become too AOR for me, and even though I started to regain some respect when they were able to finally released “Stone of Sisyphus”, I quickly lost it afterwards.  This track has some nice horns, but nothing draws me in.  Again, that’s just my own taste.

AFlowerKingCrimson – Purposeful Porpoise – “Unexplored” – Absolutely love the instrumental break in the middle, but the vocal melody just didn’t keep my attention.

The Anders – Burnin Red Ivanhoe – “Ivanhoe I Brondbyerne” – Very interesting track with pertinent lyrics and the retro sound I love.  But for me, it doesn’t quite fill the “catchiness” factor and would have faired better (for me at least) under another poll.

So that’s where I’m at so far on this poll.

Hi,

I think that the most important part of it all is that it brings the "traditional", up to date within a rock'n'roll context, and it does so with incredible flair and taste. It's just a shame that Alan Stivell is not appreciated a lot more for his work, which many times has jazzy bits, and then has other bits and pieces.

The thing about the AGAIN cd, is that I think it was made for an American audience, and no one here bothered with it ... but it has a lot of far out and rocking stuff in it ... that folks don't listen to because all Celtic folks must be Enya clones, and certainly not from Brittany, an area that I have heard some of the other Celts say ... they are fake Celts!

Just shows you what commercial music can do for everything else ... totally distort the listening public's ability to appreciate their very own culture. I imagine that he is loved in his own part of the country, but not being appreciated anywhere else is weird to me ... I happen to be one that truly believes that Enya is far more "fake" than Alan will ever be! Not that she is not good! She's fine, but too much of the hip and cool thing for me. Alan is straight forward, and even political ... try BEFORE LANDING and then SYMPHONIE CELTIQUE. Both extremely powerful and the orchestration stuff in the Symphonie is something that most rock audiences will never EVER appreciate or love!

Had I realised that "instrumentals" counted as "songs", my choice would have been different. I struggled to think of a song (in the singing words sense). I had a few what I thought were catchy ideas, and they ended up being slightly over 50 ratings. Still, I was happy to think of that.

Wha-Ha-Ha was the first that came to my mind when I saw this topic, but it was taken, and I thought it would have had more ratings. I discovered and got Shinutokiwa Betsu not that long after I joined this site. It has been mentioned various times in the forum and I am very surprised it only has 22 ratings. It has 408 ratings at rateyourmusic. I love that album and that piece, but I know it so well that I will not include it in my vote. The others I already knew were Chrome Hoof and Antique Seeking Nuns. Chrome Hoof's "Tonyte" I would have nominated had Chrome Hoof not already been nominated if Wha-Ha-Ha was already listed. Also rather surprised that Pre-Emptive False Rapture, its most rated album, only has 20 ratings, as Chrome Hoof gets mentioned quite a lot, but I guess it is because it is mostly from the same people. One of my rare reviews is about that album. Most anything disco-y and funky is commonly catchy for me.

Had I realised that instrumentals counted, this probably would have been my choice:

It will be some time before I get the chance to really pay attention to the music in this poll, list my choices, and share some impressions. I only just now voted in the last one of this series, and I generally would like to space my listening in these polls else I burn out, and due to time constraints. No hurry, I know, but I would hope to be done before voting begins for the next round. I'm not sure who, if anyone, is queued up for the next round, and when that will start, and not sure when I'll be doing my soundtracks one.

You and I do agree on Alan Stivell, moshkito, on the part especially that he is not as known as he should be.  Certainly famous to most modern harpers.

Thank you for the consideration, Mike...I agree, it would certainly also fit in the instrumental poll as well.  I imagine we'll have more of those kinds, too, along the way, since I listen to a lot of instrumental music, I have a lot to draw from....and much that has absolutely no harp in it. LOL

I would say that I would sooner leave the lyring to the harpies, except that it is more apt to say that they had winged instruments rather than stringed instruments.

Yes this definitely would have been a contender.  Nice, easy yet catchy groove, excellent build up and cool down and plenty of variety between the instruments.  Bennie Maupin is one that I need to get to know better, I've heard things from him here and there and have always enjoyed them.

Due to work and other commitments and this poll running in parallel to the Latin American one (and with 19 entries on top of that), I do this one a bit on the quick and songs need to catch my attention listening while doing something else at the same time, which is kind of fitting for the theme!

My favourites (in order of appearance - and remember, some were left out unfairly because of the "while doing something else" rule):
Wha-Ha-Ha, very quirky, nice.
Todd Rundgren, this one comes with a great and truly catchy chorus.
King Gizzard and the Lizzard Wizard - up to now none of the things I heard of them has convinced me in particular, but this one is very good, if not the first thing I'd describe as catchy.
Antique Seeking Nuns - catchiness and sophistication meet in the middle, and this is a sound I like.
Phish - another one with this straight compact sound for which I'm a sucker. Is it catchy? Hmmm... I could imagine straight instrumentals that easily get to the listener as another theme (but I will not do it).

Now that's five. What am I going to do? Antique Seeking Nuns are number one, that's for sure. Phish will just not make it, the last third of that song doesn't convince me, up to then it's great. Todd Rundgren has the best chorus (and what a chorus it is), but the rest of it doesn't excite me, so I go with Wha-Ha-Ha and King Gizzard on 2 and 3.

By the way I agree with the observation that people have very different ideas about what's "catchy". Which is fine by me.

Okay here is my final top 3:

1. Wha Ha Ha - On the Floor
2. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Crumbling Castle
3. Sweet Fingers - Good Night Robots

These are the ones that immediately caught me with attention getting riffs and memorable melodies that stick in my head, which is my interpretation of being "catchy".

Here are my thoughts on all, with the contenders in bold.  This one was, as they all have been, difficult.  I tried to wear a Lorenzo hat and not necessarily listen for what I like, but for what fit my personal criteria for catchy.  I wasn't always able to, but gave it a shot.

The Mr. Albert Show - I'm not more than a Sign ~ Flute makes me think of Ian Anderson in a perky mood.  Definitely very hook-y which is what I want to hear if thinking, “catchy.”  Like the guitars, really different kind of production, with the horns being Chicago-esque to my ear.  Catchy enough to contend, certainly.

Chrome Hoof ft. Shingai Shoniwa – Knopheria ~ Staccato throughout, with a catchy marimba sound underpinning a lot of it, which makes it different to me than a lot of sort acid-house music.  I don’t think I want to go the Knopheria, though.  This one not a contender for me.  Raff finally made room for someone else in my top 3 (sorry, Raff)  😉

Wha Ha Ha - On the Floor ~ I could certainly hear this being the soundtrack to a video game or a cartoon….There is the repeated phrase, which could be addictive to some, but this one doesn’t do it for me.  It does make me laugh, not at it, but with it, so it gets some points for that, but won’t be a contender for me.  Or so I thought.  Then I found myself later on hearing it in my mind’s ear.  Oddball contender for me.

Valdez - Black Eyed Susans ~ Kind of an alt-rock sound with just this one song (after I listened a couple of times looked at their writeup to see why prog).  I could see this having been played on those stations a lot in the time period.  Catchy in a radio-friendly way to my ear, so a contender.

Todd Rundgren - Parallel Lines ~ Too familiar with Todd to put him in contention, for me.

Zaragon - Fear To Fight ~ Reminds me of the Ambrosia/Alan Parsons/Kansas era a bit, although it appears it came out much later.  Nice rocky piece, but I don’t quite hear a “hook,” which is sort of my definition of being termed catchy. Lord, now I sound like an A&R guy.  Where’s my cigar?

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - Crumbling Castle ~  Now I really enjoy some space rock/psychedelia.  Harkening back to my SF roots like Quicksilver Messenger Service.   Enjoy the repetitive meditative raga-ish guitar sounds here and the psychedelic tremolos and such…Vocals are a little “marchy,” and kinda “alienish,” to me, but the castles are crumbling, after all and they could be on another planet.  Or maybe they’re ants, who knows?  This will be a contender.

Dr. Dopo Jam - Cowboy Song ~ Love the opening, Monty Python to Zappa.  Then cowboys!  Moving to Montana soon?  Love the humour, and an epic tale to boot.  I don’t know how catchy it is, but it gets my quirky side happy. This is a contender.

Antique Seeking Nuns - Double Egg with Chips and Beans (And A Tea) ~ Now I had seen this name before (and LOVE the name, always gives me a chuckle), but hadn’t heard anything.  I enjoy the humour aspect and the fusion of styles.  We’ll see if it sneaks into my mind’s ear later, but for right now, not a contender, missing that elusive “hook,” (for me).

Sweet Fingers - Good Night Robots ~ Actually, this one reminds me of a song from way back in the 1970’s, if it were played on a warped LP, so the progression and the dynamics are familiar to me, but it’s not the same song at all.  Maybe this is why I like it over other things I’ve heard in this genre?  I don’t know, but for now it’s a contender, it’s got that hook, at least for me.

Alan Stivell - Pop Plinn ~ My entry, so no vote from me.

Good God - Dragon Song ~ At first I was thinking Zappa-esque, then thought I recognized something about it and then looked up the band in the archives.   So was I liking it from hearing John McLaughlin in the way long ago past?  I don’t know.  So even though it was hooky enough, I am going to refrain from putting it into contender status.

Ben Levin - What a Special Day ~ More stuff that sounds Zappa-esque to me, with the humour and sarcasm, for that, made me laugh (again, with it, not at it).  Not a contender for me, unless it crops up in my mind later today, unbidden.

Phish - First Tube ~ I certainly know of this band, carried them many tours on the buses.  I never did go to one of their shows, though, nor heard much at that point in time.  Name familiarity isn’t enough for me to disqualify a piece for myself.  Nice jamming (which of course they were known for), but I don’t hear the “hook,” thing that I want for catchy.

The Legendary Pink Dots - Princess Coldheart ~ Have heard the name, but unfamiliar with the music, here.  Reminds me of Piper At the Gates of Dawn PF.  Which is one of my faves of theirs.  Really nice retro sound.  I liked the regal horn sounds to go with the story.  I’m not sold on this as catchy, but I am going to go and listen to some more of theirs because I like their sound.

Lucio Battisti - Abbracciala Abbracciali Abbracciati ~ This was really lovely in a relaxed and understated way.  Made me think of psych era Tim Buckley, Pearls Before Swine as far as some of the “dreamy,” quality to the music.  I did not find this one catchy, either, but it is very beautiful and, like The Legendary Pink Dots, will seek out some other of his music to listen to.

Chicago – Now ~ Definitely an AOR kind of sound to me, and of course I know Chicago, but not this tune.  They had a hook, just not the kind that grabs me, but this is just not a style that appeals to me.  So not a contender.

Purposeful Porpoise -Unexplored ~ I like this band a lot, have heard another piece by them that caught my ear on radio the other day.  That being said, even though I like them musically, esp with their violinist, I don’t hear what would make this particular tune catchy for me (I like to "hear" something from it once it's over and it's quiet).  I am going to seek more out by them, though.  Sorry this time, Mike.

Burnin Red Ivanhoe - Ivanhoe i Brøndbyerne ~ Marked as Jazz Rock/Fusion, I hear a lot more psych in this, with the Farfisa-ish organ and the blurry kind of production….which, now that I read a bit about them, I understand why.  Might actually be a Farfisa, after all.  I had never heard of this, feel some echoes of bands like Fever Tree (when they were rocking).  I will let them contend.

you did not pay attention at what's going on in this thread.
the songs need to be from albums that have less than 50 ratings.
so TFK would not qualify, whatever the album. Big smile

OK, just finished listening to the songs once again. Great job, everyone! Lots of interesting stuff this time around. Ruling out my own pick and the two songs I was already familiar with (Sweet Fingers and Lucio Battisti), here's my top 3:

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - Crumbling Castle
The Legendary Pink Dots - Princess Coldheart
Antique Seeking Nuns - Double Egg

Not surprisingly for those who know me, psychedelic/space/Canterbury-tinged stuff tickles my fancy more than anything else. Then come the honourable mentions:

Alan Stivell - Pop Plinn (folk/world music is another love of mine)
Purposeful Porpoise - Unexplored (had no idea this was a supergroup of sorts - the track is excellent though)
Burnin' Red Ivanhoe - Ivanhoe i Brøndbyerne (not crazy about the vocals, but the instrumental sections are top notch).

This one was really difficult. I have 6-7 favourites but had to choose 3.

Chrome Hoof ft. Shingai Shoniwa - Knopheria
Dopo Jam's "Cowboy Song"
Phish - First Tube

Well, you can always post a song out of competition, but Cristi has closed the nominations as far as I understand him, and people have started to vote. So I guess no new songs in the competition. But I'm not the boss. Wink

To be honest, I was a bit baffled by your first posting in the Team thread that you'd like one poll a week, and then you started this one just three days (I think) after the other one.

The Latin Poll was almost over, or so I thought, some opened a discussion there, so... my bad, I did not mean to upset anyone, obviously.

I would like to mention a few more regardless just for fun or post youtube videos. Should I start another thread or can I post them here?

I didn't write it or perform on it so technically it's not my song. Wink Trust me no one here would want to hear "my" songs. LOL

Going through the first songs now.

The Mr. Albert Show - I'm not more than a Sign. To me a very classic prog sound that blends with more straight forward rock. Very much built around riffs and hooks. I'm surprised I haven't heard of the band, because it is absolutely not bad.

Chrome Hoof ft. Shingai Shoniwa - Knopheria. And now for something completely different. As it begins, it is not a sound I would normally associate with prog; it's more like electropop with some echoes of the 80's now and then. But then suddenly come some very proggy chord changes. Undoubtedly an intriguing combination, and as such it should be a possible contender for my votes.

Wha Ha Ha - On the Floor. This sounds very mysterious and weird, and mysterious and weird is almost always a quality in itself in my world. A cold electronic sound meets atonality and cacophony. Quite avant-garde at times. Nintendo on acid. I wouldn't describ it as catchy, but absolutely intriguing, and this is what matters. Later it changes to a mix of ska rhythm and Frank Zappa (!). In general, many genres are mixed in here. Another possible contender.

Valdez - Black Eyed Susans. 5/8 and 7/8 time signatures in the verse, then comes a more mainstreamish rock chorus. I like the organ and the handclaps, but I am not so fond of his singing. But absolutely not a bad song. Chassic prog elements after the second chorus. Melodically I somehow get associations to Sting.

Todd Rundgren - Parallel Lines. This screams 80's in almost every respect. The sound has never really been my taste. I acknowledge its qualities, but I can't see myself voting for it.

Zaragon - Fear to Fight. More 80's sounds (the synthesizer). Once again not something that appeals to me, but I do like the more heavy riffs that come in at some point before the first tempo change.

Keep in mind that the last three I posted are unofficial and not part of the proper poll. Tongue
