I was thinking that both albums were sort of after what is usually considered the apex for both bands yet they are still pretty strong and still often considered part of the respective bands main canon.

Though I love both bands and both albums, my vote goes to Going for the One.

Well, being boring and predictible is the kiss of death. Plus I had to have something for those who don't like either.

Enjoy both. But I'll go with GG since I think that album is underrated, whereas I think GFTO is a little overrated.

GFTO features Awaken. Even though Interview is a great album I love a lot, my vote goes to Yes.

G4T1 has "Parallels" and "Awaken," which are two of Yes' best tracks...

At first, I thought this was an interview with Yes about the Going for the One album, until I looked more closely.

Paul, you need to awaken to the idea that you might have lost your head in an empty city but you can give it back if you listen to the wonderous stories.

My misreading of your poll title might have something to do with the fact that it's still early morning here in England and I'd only just Awoken.

GFTO was the first Yes album I heard after my love affair wirh prog started with Genesis, Rush, Camel and ELP...I didn't like it at first, but like stinky cheese and sour beer, it suddenly clicked and by the time I left college Yes were my favorite band...It's an awesome release...9.88 on the proghter scale...

Interview is an underrated GG record, but GFTO has more meat across the entire affair.
I Lost My Head is one of the best GG songs EVER.

I have already cast my vote for Yes. That won’t change, but a slight digression ; Regarding Interview, all GG up to and including The Power and The Glory are 5 stars for me. Freehand and Interview are 4 stars. I don’t understand why some folks think the quality dropped off after Freehand. Enter The Missing Piece, the ‘transitional’ one. Still pretty good, then a big slip to Giant for a Day - it’s fun, likeable etc. but nothing really substantial. Just felt like mentioning this.

had there been another GG album, it would have been tough, but against Interview, GFTO (with all its flaws), is an easy winner.

The complaint I usually hear about GFTO is that the production is a bit thin. Are there other flaws and if so what are they?

I'm no prog meister, but the production on Going for the One sounds perfectly fine to me, and the album includes my all-time favourite Yessong, Awaken.

^ First vinyl copy I bought of GFTO, (as a ‘gold star’ grading), sounded like there was a clump of dust on my stylus, but I change the stylus regularly (more often than statistics say) so I dealt with it. Years later, convinced the vinyl was shot, I bought another (allegedly) pristine copy. It sounded the same. I still have that LP, and it still sounds the same. Do I like the album still - yes, I love it. Must be the production or mastering.....?? Oh yeah, this is a couple of turntables later.....

I was sure I was gonna bother someone with my comment.
Let's see - Howe torturing the guitar on the title track... he suffocates that song. Sometimes less is more.
Turn of the Century - never did much for me, I've never understood the hype.
Wonderous Stories - nice little ballad, harmless
So for me there are two great songs on the album.

The only problem for me is the amount of reverb on everything turns it into a soggy mush.
They actually fixed this on Tormato, which for some reason cops even more sh*t from the production side. But c'mon, Tormato at least sounds sharper and less clouded compared to GFTO.

I just think the overall sound of the music is too bright and lacks the grit and intensity of the previous albums and yes, the production hurts my poor ears. Every now and then you'll just be destroyed by some ear-rape synth or vocal line. Decent album though.

This thread has been taken over by the hamster, just like Cristi said it would. There are now four of the same videos of the hamster scampering about on the keyboard, and he's already picked up a vote in the poll for the most entertaining keyboard solo.

Both have a killer track ( Interview and Parallels) but I find GFTO just a bit too much of a case of a band turning back on itself and almost becoming almost a 'self parody'.
Awaken - love the church organ and kudos for an original ending. Wonderous Stories is very appealing and so different to anything else at the time. The title track is odd but I don't dislike it. Turn of the Century is quite pretty. Yes its all good but I would rather listen to other albums they did.
GG were still forging ahead and no reason that it should be considered one of their weaker albums. Perhaps the bits of talking in between tracks is a bit off putting but it's not a deal breaker for me. Interview gets my vote.

I like talking on albums if it's more of a spoken word thing and not random. For example if it's part of a story or monologue I tend to be ok with it and often think it adds to the album. I would say here it's maybe a bit more distracting for the same reason it is on DSOTM(probably the only thing that brings that iconic album down for me).

Interview was the beginning of the end for GG, their first huge misstep from which they couldn't recover. GFTO wins this one easily.

The album is fine, I guess, but you should try and give it a spin after having listened to The Power and the Glory and Free Hand. You'll notice it right away. It's not even close to those records. Much simpler, less creative, some of the classic GG's quirks and touches are gone forever...one can really tell the band was changing.

Much simpler? I'd argue that if anything it's closer to the spiky, avant leanings of The Power and the Glory than the somewhat slightly-streamlined Free Hand. I wouldn't consider Interview one of their friendlier albums.
Less creative? Perhaps... There are no real re-inventions happening here. It's Gentle Giant doing what they did well, and I see no problem with that. Also, I've read that the amount of overdubs they did on Interview rendered live performances impractical for many of the songs. So studio wise, maybe no less creative than any of the previous albums.
Some would say some of the classic GG quirks and touches were gone by In a Glass House, but for me all that good stuff is still there. You could copy and paste your criticism to fit The Missing Piece and it would make perfect sense there (I love that album too).
Anyway, for me it holds up after giving any other GG album a spin, because these days it's pretty much my favourite.

GFTO is my least favorite from classic Yes. Interview is a fine album from one of the biggest and most creative prog giants.
