Hi there, the recent cover versions poll reminded me of this excellent version of Steve Hackett's Spectral Mornings. I wonder whether there are other covers of instrumentals that add vocals to good effect? (I'd say if a band redo their own instrumental with vocals, that would also qualify.)

ELP's "Pictures at an Exhibition"
"Child in Time" is a lyrics added version of "Bombay Calling".

The Yardbirds' "Still I'm Sad" covered by Rainbow:

Well, the song that comes to my mind is not exactly prog (although the artist is in our database): KITARO's tune from his Silk Road music became a beautiful song 'Caravan' sung by Richard Page if I remember the name right.

But the original isn't an instrumental? Do I miss something?

Oh yes, the first one is kind of obvious... the second one surprises me... had heard the It's A Beautiful Day album once a hundred years ago but didn't remember that.

Sorry, my badEmbarrassed. The original Rainbow cover, on their debut album, was instrumental, but the live version does have the original lyrics. I just got things mixed up.

Barry Manilow's "Could this be Magic" (I think thats the title) uses a Chopin piece.

Wasn't "Whiter Shade of Pale" 'borrowed' from something?
Jazz instrumentals that jazz singers have added lyrics to are far too many to mention. Some famous solos by Parker and Coltrane have even had lyrics added.

Maybe we constrain ourselves to things with at least some prog connection? Wink

The only one I can think of is spectral mornings. Both versions are great but I probably prefer the original. I will say that it's cool that Steve played on the remake also.

I almost forgot about this one. It's a vocal version of Chariots of fire called race to the end.

Speaking of Jon Anderson, he wrote some lyrics to some old Ponty instrumentals for his collaboration with Jean-Luc:

Oh good! Haven't explored solo Jon Anderson a lot but these are interesting and add something to the original!
